Welding is often used to repair alloy rims, however, due to the heat generated by welding, it's not suitable for repairing wheel spokes or other structural elements, as it can lead to changes to the metal's grain structure. With cold spray, there's no heat generated, meaning you can repair structural components quickly, easily, and cheaply with the TItomic's D523 cold spray system.

      This is cold spray. In a nutshell: Take a metal powder particle... accelerate it to high speed using a supersonic jet stream ... and direct it where you want it ... then it will go SPLAT into the surface and stick! Next, do that with a spray of particles ... and now you're building up parts with Cold Spray. Titomic is mastering this technique across the alphabet of materials (like Titanium) with their Titomic Kinetic Fusion (TKF) process. TKF can be used for 3D printing of rockets, repair of thermally sensitive parts, bonding materials that can't be traditionally welded, specialised coatings ... many many applications.

      Cold Spray is unique in its non-melt process, avoiding heat-affected zones, enabling the creation of thick coatings and precise geometry repairs with high bond strength. Metallisation and HVOF, while effective in their own right, involve melting and can affect the substrate thermally, generally producing thinner coatings and being less suitable for high-precision repairs.

      Absolutely - that's a perfect application for cold spray. In fact, it's used by Rolls Royce MTU for engine refurbishment to repair wear, pitting corrosion, and more. The best part is that it can apply corrosion resistant materials, such as aluminium, directly onto steel and other metals. It's also used as a grit blaster to remove corrosion. • @DCPAus
      @DCPAus 10 месяцев назад

      The process is based on Supersonic Particle Deposition, where the metal does not melt, not the base metal or the metal being sprayed. The gas is heated up and released through a De Laval nozzle which accelerates the metal powder in excess of 600 m/s, when it hits the surface it plastically deforms to become a solid metal without ever melting. This is a meltless process which is what provides it many of its unique benefits over melt-based processes.

      Different metal powders have different deposition efficiencies (i.e. how much sticks) but as the powder is quite dense and its velocity drops off quite quickly the powder that does not bond is either sucked up by a dust extractor or falls to the floor. Titomic will work with clients to best define how to operate the system inside, whether a downdraft table is needed, whether an extraction is needed, make sure operators have the right PPE. When doing a simple demonstration though, as long as the operator is wearing the correct PPE it can all be handled safely with minimal mess or material loss.

      Hi Pazitor - thanks for the questions! It's exactly as you describe - another tool within the arsenal of a welder, fitter, machinist, or fabrication workshop. Compared to welding, the main benefit of cold spray is that it doesn't generate heat, meaning you can deposit thick coatings, up to 20mm, and restore geometries of shafts, keyways, and large sections in cast iron and other parts, meaning no more cracking, pre-heating, cooling, etc. So, in that regard, it does open up new opportunities to save more parts from the scrap heap, or for refurbishment work, enables operators to turn around parts more quickly, meaning more profitable operations.
