I shot this with a Minolta super 8 movie camera in the early 70's (I'm guessing 1972.) I recently digitized it.

A project I produced while a student in the R/TV department at Long Beach State. I used the facilities at Teleprompter Cable TV Channel 3 in Newport Beach for some of the post production work.

This is some footage I should have thrown away years ago. Now it seems as faded as some of our memories

Hitched up and down PCH so many times back in the day, I really miss most of what I don't remember. ✌️
This is my Huntington Beach. The summer of 71, my friend Chris and I, Monday thru Friday every week until school started again, rode our bikes from Garfield and Magnolia to tower 5. On the week ends we went to the state beach at the beginning of Brookhurst with our families. I've lived in several states since then, and nothing can compare.
Jacks surf shop was a joke if you're from HB. It came from anaheim. Wouldn't be caught dead with a jacks board !!!
who is the genius who rides against traffic on PCH while filming ?
I was there. This was my time. So much has changed in Hintington Beach. We had a simpler time. Thanks for the video.
Fantastic video, there is so many chrome bumpers!
I graduated from Huntington Beach in 1971.. Met Mrs Slater on Gothard St. Slater Street is named after her family.
...now its the Slater Slums with half of mexico living behind it!
@05EVORS It was a different kind of Mexico around 1971.. like the simple lifestyle of the central valley. In front of Slater's house on Gothard was I believed a bean field. Farm workers would rest by the house.. Now, it's Ocean View High School.
I miss when my city was a quiet little beach town :(
If I'm not incorrect, this ends with them pulling up to an apartment building near Dwyer. If so, I knew a dude who used to live in that upstairs apartment.
It looked so empty and that's the way I remember it! It was just fun to be there, you didn't have to pay to park your car and it was so much simpler. Loved Huntington Beach; we would cut school and just drive down there from Whittier and spend the afternoon. It was our beach! Lots of memories of HB. (from Sandi)
Nice ending 💫💫💫
I can smell both the salt air, and the heavier car exhaust during the time!
Jack's Surfboards where I got my first surfboard in 1965. I ate at that Jack in the Box many times, tacos 25 cents, still remember how they tasted, not great. I remember Chuck Dent Surfboards.
Thanks for sharing this video. You don't realize how much you miss something until it's gone. HB was a great place to grow up.
So glad I got to do this back then. Loved growing up within a bike ride from here.
Thanks for shaing this great look-back film with us! Very cool from a historical record standpoint.
Way back before gentrification and tourism. Born in 72.
sad
Makes me really anxious,I have the best memories of my there, after vietnam I bought a condo on 19th,state of the art,it was 225.00 a month I could see the water from my little balcony, then things started changing, was the best place on earth.
Can't let the working man have it too good. The uppermiddleclass invited their classmates from around the world to come and keep the working class down.
Haha!! Look at the oil pump. Home ❤️
My hometown HB YAY! I grew up in that era
Lordy how many of those cars I said “Hey I had one of those!” Makes me wonder what I’m taking for granted today, that I will miss nostalgically in 3-4 decades. Live in the moment people.
Yep. This vid proves LSD was a thing back then.
I was born there in 1970, and the first shot where the camera drops into the bike path is near 14th street where we lived. THere were oil rigs all over the place and scraping tar balls off our feet after going to the beach was a normal day at the beach. I will never forget the smell, and it actually smelled good, I though at the time. Thanks for this.
50 years earlier HB was one giant oil field with derriks everywhere.
Yeah man, watching this I remember the smell of the oil rigs, and sage brush. Good times
Bro it’s like a 1970s GoPro POV 💀💀💀how was dude riding and recording in 1970??
Nice! Vid. I was wondering was the Golden Bear around then? I did see it. Maybe I missed it at 2:42??
Where are all the fat people?
Jacks Surfboards on Main at PCH. Still there, definitely not the same... Guess nothing else is though, either.
Hi Gary, would it be possible to reach you via email? I really like your clip and wanted to enquire about it.
I really miss the days when Southern California wasn't so trendy and stuck up. Great video :)
I lived w my parents house in Canoga Park going to school and shortly after high school got a girlfriend in Huntington Beach by the college and I would commute that every day and I felt so safe and belong welcomed. So Cal no longer feels safe or welcoming to me .....
I lived on Newland Street, 70-76 awesome time!
I found your pad 418 5th Street, Huntington Beach "Surf City" forever !
Love this, great job.
Remember it well when there were more oil wells that buildings on PCH. I lived on 17th.
What I would do to rewind The times and start over!
All those wonderful cars!!
The old Jack’s surf shop I remember!!! Thanks for sharing!
Oh Jesus, how wonderful this video is. I was there so often, especially 67-70. On big days, the guys and I would tackle the outside break, the come out of the water and watch the skinny girls in bikinis. Just beautiful. Thank you!!!
There's lot of cops for 1970 crust. You guys were into poppers. Glo pop house acid
Video cameras in 1970 were large compared to today and had to be held when filming. Probably tough to do while riding a bike. Oil well on the beach at :51.
now its full of over priced dumps.....
This is amazing what you shared here. A million thank yous
Those were the days my friend, I thought they'd never end......
This is great!
Perhaps the title should be Uber1
Wonder what came first, music or the video?
One of my favorite memories!
I don't know 1970 seems like Huntington Beach had lot of cops..I'm sure people brought ice chest full of beer n groceries. The liquor store was probably walking distance, coming back with open container while crossing the street. If you didn't gossip inapprehensable additude profile an image of hash, poppers acid would certainly like to disspel. Nothing business just personal severe beating incarcerated, moved to big house maximum sentence. 1970 crust is way before my time, I was born in 66 so I never appreciated oldies until later.. Although Huntington Beach was probably a lil more hip then fresrag ca. Fresno sure. Fresrag in1970 was Mayberry.
the audio goes perfectly with the awesome footage
Eerieness!
