PlayaBeest - A pedal powered,12 leg walking machine at Burning Man 2017

-We ran out of time/energy/money to get it tuned up and running the way I wanted, but it worked.
-Designed and built over nights and weekends in less than 15 months start to finish with many weeks off
-Engineering and project managment by me, built by a very hardworking team of ~40 volunteers
-12 legs at ~105 lbs each
~2500+ lbs empty (no crew)
-Transported in pieces and assembled on site, each ~105 lb leg was one piece, upper frame halves were one piece at ~450lbs,
-Final size 13' wide, 21' long, 10.5' from ground to tops of the legs
-Pedal powered by 1-4 people

We spent a day flight testing our aircraft about 2 weeks before the final event where we competed, won, and broke the world record. We still hold the world record as of 12/2019. Well... This was as far as we got, but it was damn close. Thankfully Bret filmed Nathan sweeping one of the legs through most of its range of motion before we had to tear it down. Here's a couple short snippets of my second test of my 'pyro board'. The test wasn't great for 2 reasons: 1. it was so windy that I had to crank the gas up and the flames are debatably bigger than desired 2. this was on some sketchy dead end street in the dog patch in SF. First run. There's only one gas input so the flow isn't distributed well. Hence the brick. I'll try to fix that for the next test. Also it's 11pm in the middle of SF so I couldn't crank the volume properly.

Very nice story! Reminds me of the Icarus V. The chord line seems to be longer and different tips. Would you mind to provide some drawings and dimensions, please?
I studied the ICARUS V and the swift quite a bit in working on this Flugtag glider. The large chords are a result of the low stall speed needed to get flying at low launch speeds at low altitudes. I don't have dimensions handy but there is nothing magical. It was 200 ft^2 or so rectangular. Very low aspect ratio ~4. Reflexed airfoils and moderate sweep with some modest washout for minimum induced drag.

I would have put two guys on the right two of guys on the left, pedaling... Instead of having one solid camshaft forward motion...
it had the ability to decouple the right and left sides for turning it's hard to get excited pedalers to coordinate so I locked the left and right drives for most of testing
Seriously, you use skateboard bearings???🤣🙈 Why not just four pairs instead of six, since you ran out of time to get what you wanted to work right... And would lighten your load...
there's a variety of bearing types in this many were skateboard size the legs have to be in groups of three to always keep one foot on the ground, otherwise the ride would be very unpleasant and require much more effort, because the whole machine would be bouncing up and down
