Merging queenless colonies and making final preparations for the summer honey flow
We are still finding surprises in our apiary such as a queen supercedure, drone laying and a missing queen! However, we are relieved that the dearth is over with the blackberry now flowering in profusion. In this video, we've completed all the final manoeuvres in preparation for colony expansion and the major summer honey flow.

After splitting all the hives in the apiary, the first inspection has revealed 100% success rate as each hive now has a queen, they will be able to build up quickly ready for the summer honey flow.

The dearth's arrived and they're robbing!

Even though we have a profusion of poached egg plants flowering in the garden, which the bees love, most of the spring flowers are now over. As the weather gets warmer, the bees are increasingly frustrated at not finding much nectar and are ready to turn into robber bees as soon as any hive is opened! Even the bumblebees who are nesting in the garage by the freezer are in on the game! The spare...
Bait comb removal and checking up on our swarm
Просмотров 462 года назад
On a very wet and unseasonably cold day, we had to remove all the bait combs that were put in 11 days ago. With all the cells now capped, we are hopeful that we have captured most of the varroa in the colonies. The bait combs can now be frozen for 24 hours before returning them to the hives for the bees to clean out and re-use. With the awful weather, the swarm hive would not have survived had ...
Giving a swarm a home

Early in the morning on a wet and miserable day, a rather damp swarm is collected and given a new hive in the apiary.
10 Queens in one hive! Let the battle commence

Every inspection always has its surprises. Today's routine check was to ensure that the Queen cells in each hive had hatched successfully...then you find in the last hive numerous hidden cells all hatching at the same time!
2nd Swarm event in two days...the one that got away!
Просмотров 1052 года назад
The last two days we've been removing all but one queen cell in each of the split hives so as to avoid the first queen hatching and swarming. Whilst carrying this out, one of our other hives decides to swarm.
One of the ways to prevent swarming

Filmed over three days, each hive has been split to hopefully prevent them from swarming and to raise new queens.
Amazing swarm that did an about turn...watch what happened!

Our hearts sank when we saw one of the hives that we had recently split, starting to swarm. Most likely they were absconding which can happen when their circumstances change dramatically. However, they did an about turn when they realised their queen wasn't with them...
Monster Hives are preparing to Swarm!!

Amalgamating the hives ten days ago and the superb spring weather has brought forward the bees' desire to swarm. Today's assessment allows us to prepare for the next stage in a few days time.

The unseasonably warm weather continues which gives us the opportunity to put a honey super on each of the hives in the home apiary.
A varroa treatment for the two new colonies
Просмотров 542 года назад
Having made up two nucleus colonies, we needed to treat them to eliminate any varroa mites present on the bees and in the comb. As oxalic acid does not penetrate through wax cappings, it was necessary to uncap all the capped brood in the hives before vapourising.

Judgement Day for our Queen Bees
Просмотров 442 года назад
In today's video, we are merging hives together which will make them exceptionally strong and almost guarantee them preparing to swarm fairly soon. Evidence of swarming early gives the beekeeper the advantage to split the hives and for the bees to build up ready for the summer honey flow. This isn't always standard practice but at least we do not have to be continually on the lookout for queen ...

Mortar and pestle for an hour first? My arms would be screaming.
We've not known it to and some of our infused honey's are three years old
do you have a link t buy that strainer?
20 ltr bucket and strainers supplied by Thornes bees supplies .UK
Does the infusion make the honey spoil over time or still has a long shelf life like raw honey?
Not at all. Shelf life Wil be affected only is moisture content goes above 20%
I would have put the waste in vodka.
Why is my raw, unfiltered honey hard and white?
❤
Great video 🙌
Hi, I use 15 vanilla pods per 5 litres of honey. 20 Cinnamon sticks per 5 litres and 400gr or more for root ginger.
Thank you so much for brief explanation.. sur do you have any notes..on exact quantities to be precise.. i would greatly appreciate.. Please let me know
Today I treated my colonies for a 2nd time in 2 weeks. Will do a 3rd next week. I’ve never scratched the cappings. I sew full frames of capped brood which is the earliest I’ve seen before. Still, it is what it is. Wishing you a successful season.
Thank you Sir! You have given me some good ideas for the 2024 harvest
st peter's bells are also taylors with a sharp 2nd
How did you make the ginger one?
Bought at least half a kilo of fresh root ginger, sliced it thinly and placed on wire racks in the oven and at a very low temperature, took out some of the moisture. Then tipped it all in the honey and stirred daily until happy with the flavour, then strained through a filter. The reason for taking out some moisture is, that the honey will go over 20 percent moisture content if not but if it's just for you and not for sale, it doesn't matter.
Thank you I was wondering about the moisture content. I was planning on using powdered gingers for that reason.
Andy - Great demonstration and video editing as well!! Question: Is the seed honey straight honey or is it infused as well? Also - I just purchased some Ground Premium Ceylon Cinnamon and not the sticks. Have you used the this before and if so, how much would you recommend the ratio to be? Thanks again!!
Hi, I've not tried infusing with ground cinnamon so it would be a matter of trial and error really. I tended to judge the strength by sampling regularly until I thought the flavour strong enough. By using ground cinnamon, you may need quite a fine filter at the end of the process as it could be too grainy.
Andy what is seeded honey? How much u added to cinnamon honey?
Leave it in a cool place and see....it may take a little longer to soft set
I just added the first round of runny honey and I didn't weight it out. with that said what happens if I added to much? I think about 12% my eye's aren't calibrated. Should I leave it set more then 2 weeks or just bottle it or toss it and start over
유의미한 일정이 없어서 였다고 추정
John 3:16 KJV For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
So what did you do with the other 3 boxes and frames? I have oroblem right now in 3 hives need move fast my heart is sad. Sense i move to Washington state it bee quite a challenge with bees.
We cut out all the frames which had brood in them, the remaining frames were kept in isolation for 4 weeks which should be long enough for any disease to die out, and re-used them. Cleaned boxes with hot washing soda water.
@@andycope5985 Andy thank you so much for your quick response I so appreciate it I will do my next whatever needs to be done to get this thing out of my hives thank you
Thank you, very informative...
they are anticlockwise
No they're not..dry up will ya. Either you get it wrong or you just shove info on here that's already in Doves Guide.
What’s the game?
This is great! Really helped me.
Not going to say how many times I've been through this video but yes, great fun and very helpful.
New to bell ringing, found this very fun and helpful thank you!
okay, THIS is what Zoom was made for 🙂😍
hi Andy, how do i get my first smooth honey (yeast). Can I use crystallized honey frozen in the fridge as a flowing honey (yeast)?
Hi, Yes, that should be okay to use.
@@andycope5985 thanks
Hi. I'm Essam from Syria. In Summer season , if temperature is about 35 c.d. . Will creamed honey turn back to runny honey ( liquid ) ?
Hi Essam, unfortunately creamed honey will turn back to runny honey above 30 deg c. Unlike runny honey, it would be best to keep it in a fridge or somewhere below 20 deg c.
So nice.. Shook swarm is a very good method to remove diseases ..
Great explanation, Andy. Thank you. This year my spring honey has set solid in the jars presumably because far more oil seed rape has been grown around here than usual. Am I able to cream it using your method if I very, very gently warm the jarred honey, empty it into a bucket and use it as the 'runny honey' part of the procedure? Sorry if it seems a stupid question! Thanks.
I'm sure you can, although we don't have oil seed rape up here. You would have to make sure that the runny honey has definitely not got any crystals in it as this will seed the honey with the coarse crystals. But it's well worth a try as when it works, it is really smooth and delicious! Just make sure that the honey is cooled down completely before adding the seed honey.
@@andycope5985 thank you so much for taking the trouble to reply! I think I'll definitely give it a go. The honey I've got is tasty but spoon-bending!
Terrific video, is this method effective at reducing a hive's urge to swarm
I have so proud you are using Pure Ceylon cinnamon. Thank you very much and love you for my country ❤️ Your Vedios are more valuable.
Love it! Going to try this :) keep up the good work and thank you for sharing again!! 🤩😀
Excellent
Hello, my kids love your movies about making honey. Is it possible to buy some honey from you please?
Hi, nice to know, thanks. We do sell some of our surplus honey (UK delivery only) on ebay. Check it out on: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/165198243700 for the infused honey and www.ebay.co.uk/itm/165044190283 for the clear honey
Love watching the whole vanilla pods going in. These naturally infused honeys will be on my next order.
Lovely video, really nice set up for your girls :D
Thanks for putting time making this video 🙏
I’m so enjoying listening to this. Each line was relatively simple most of the time but the nett effect is gorgeous.
Thank you so much, Andy and Laura. Hx
It's amazing that you take a mortar and pestle to create the creamed honey- most recipes i've seen use a whipping machine to do that process
For our small cottage industry, it is too costly for the amount we make and it's fun to do.

Look like they have been poisoned
It can give that impression but this is typical of Chronic Bee paralysis virus which is now becoming quite common across the Country and we are all trying different ways to get the hives through this and back to good health
Gr8 video. What happened the brood?
@@AM-tn8yu ruclips.net/video/nodolcvsJ8M/видео.html
@@andycope5985 yes. Thank you should have said I am interested in the shook to move bees from a commercial nuc to a National...thus my question. Mine are healthy bees
@@AM-tn8yu Sorry, we misinterpreted your question. In our case, the brood and all the comb would have been infected with the virus so we had to melt down all the wax and boil the frames in soda water. If the brood was healthy, we would have definitely used this to boost another colony.
