August has arrived and the day has finally come to harvest our hemp crop. We will be assessing three different harvesting methods, hand harvesting, sickle bar harvesting and silage harvesting. The bast fiber removed by hand will be used as a base point to measure other harvesting and decorticating techniques. The bailed up hemp will be taken to the Riverdale Hemp Factory for processing. Welcome to this much-anticipated moment! On July 31st we gathered with friends, family and hemp industry members to celebrate the growth of fiber hemp in California. Modern Vision of Hemp Fiber Industry Presentation

Lawrence Serbin shares his vision of the hemp fiber industry. The mission of the Riverdale Hemp Factory is to modernize the hemp fiber industry and increase yields to farmers. Once separated, we will add value to the fibers by engineering them t...
Green Decorticating Hemp Stalks

Today we experiment with green decortication. Green decortication is removing the bark fiber from the hemp stalks at the time of harvest. In the green state, the bast fiber is much easier to remove from the stalks. So easy in fact, it can be done with a finger. Hemp Water Retting

The word “retting" is synonymous with the word “rotting” and is the process of nature decomposing the hemp stalks after they have been cut. Field retting, which is common in areas having limited water resources...

    Ya know, I cant find any evidence of it on google right now, but I coulda sworn Ive seen both on videos and IRL many marijuana/cannabis plants that are taller than 20X feet.... Like... Im talking telephone pole height. Maybe Im mis-remembering or hallucinating or some other third thing(bad perspective, mis-judged or something....) But Im very very very sure that you can get plants that are bigger than that. The trick is vegging them for multiple years. There are multiple year old plants, and..... if you kept fertilizing those, and they could be grown for years longer(dunno if your outdoor weather can support that. Some places can. Alternatively theres indoors, greenhouses, or other methods to keep them in the pocket during the worst months(including extra lighting outdoors, wind breaks, etc) IF it can get to that height in a season, it stands to reason that if it can be made to live multiple seasons, it could get bigger. Thus I suspect that perhaps Im not mis-remembering and either larger specimens arent recorded, or if they are those records arent adequately archived online

      @lawrenceserbin7148 Месяц назад

      I do believe it is possible that a plant grown indoors and kept in the vegetative state could live multiple years and grow very tall. That would require artificial lights. But you would need a very tall room to house the plant. Our plant was 24' tall grown outdoors.

      @@lawrenceserbin7148 Im not trying to discredit you guys! Im pretty sure theres some places though where it can grow year round and I think Ive seen some massive ones... Maybe I am misremembering or misjudging! In any case, impressive crop! Cool video and work!

      @@tandava-089 Hemp is an annual crop. This means the flowering period is based upon the number of hours of light it received. It stays in vegetative stage when there are more hours of light than darkness (Spring/Summer), and then begins to flower when the amount of daylight diminishes around late summer. Flowering starts when daylight drops below 13-14 hours per day depending upon the variety. The number of hours of daylight in the tropics is usually never above or below 11.5 hours to 12.5 hours, so a plant grown there would grow about 1 foot and then flower. Some varieties are auto flowering and will begin to flower after a certain number of days regardless of the photoperiod. If a plant were to stay in its vegetative stage all year round, it would not be able to reproduce and would eventually die out.

    • @tandava-089
      @tandava-089 Месяц назад

      @@lawrenceserbin7148 I think while this is true there may be some strains with genes that sort of are exceptions to this... I believe there are a few strains that tend to wait till at least 12 and maybe more hours of darkness. I know some strains are VERY sensitive to light.... perhaps this plays a role, be it ambient light, or moonlight being enough or something. Further I think there are some strains which cant flower in that period of time totally or at least so completely that they exhaust themselves and die rather than revegging afterwards. I could be mistaken, but this is just from my observations, memory, and knowledge. And, while all this is true, I do know some people have used lighting outdoors to keep plants in veg outside for a few years(although its rare if at all they grow for height) but I do swear Ive seen some somewhere tall as telephone poles.... I just cant find(evidence for) it/remember even where right now Like I said though still, impressive crop, and cool video! Have you ever considered using lighting to attempt to see how tall you can grow a specimen artificially? Idk if your into PR, but definitely wouldnt be a bad feather in the cap if you do work on seeing just how tall we can get them to grow!

    • @hemptraders5881
      @hemptraders5881 3 месяца назад

      The footage was probably not an exact acre but a good image of the material bailed up. If hemp is grown properly, it should produce 4 tons of whole hemp stalk per acre. If we assume 1 bale of fiber is 500 pounds, then a full acre would produce 16 bales.

    • @derekbaker3768
      @derekbaker3768 3 месяца назад

      A great video would be to start with a marked off acre as a visual. Then the bales of hemp estimated to be produced followed by stacks of material equivalent of what that acre of hemp turned into. i e. how many bolts of cloth, or feet of rope, or stacks of wood panel....This turns into that kinda visuals@@hemptraders5881

    So it’s not feasible to grow for dual purpose of both fiber and cbd flower? It appears that it is being done in Romania. If I grow so many acres of feminized cbd flower couldn’t I use the stalks to collect fibers for hemp plastic, Crete, insulation, etc. or is there a better use so that we are using the entire plant?

    • @hemptraders5881
      @hemptraders5881 6 месяцев назад

      While it is technically possible to collect the fiber from hemp grown for flower and have it processed, it would not be enough to cover the demands for the industry once it takes off. The industry will not be able to rely upon the flower crops of marijuana or CBD to fulfill its demands. Most flower crops are too small to justify building a decortication factory to process the stalks. And the cost to ship the stalks from a flower crop to a processing facility would be too expensive.

    • @hemptraders5881

      We are working on machinery that will accomplish this. Yes it will be one machine and both the bast fiber and hurd fiber come out very clean during the process. The cleaning step mentioned in this video would not be needed. However the fiber would probably need post harvest processing to get standard length and thickness of the fibers.

    When I was a kid we found one growing in a stream bed right next to the water and it grew up more than 6 feet past the road surface of the bridge that spanned the creek. It was another 12-15 feet down to the stream bed below so it was at least 18 feet tall and had the shape of a Christmas tree as it had no competition other than some grass at the bottom and the much larger cotton wood trees all around. This was probably mid to late august just before school started again in SD so near to, but not at, the end of growing season, so it might have gotten bigger had we not chopped it down and wrestled it back to my friend's place to show his parents. It took two 10 year old boys just to drag it because of how much foliage was dragging on the ground.

    • @hemptraders5881
      @hemptraders5881 10 месяцев назад

      We would not characterize hemp as a better fiber than cotton since they are too dissimilar. Cotton is great for some products, while hemp is better for others. Hemp is much more closer to fax/linen as a fiber. We also blend hemp with cotton to achieve the best attributes of both. Hemp however does have the potential to be cheaper than cotton and better fore the environment.
