I got the "nail in the tire" scam done to me at Shannon Airport. I knew I was being scammed but, didn't see it coming. Never had this problem in the States and a bit surprised that it was done by a large corporation. The guys working the counter were young. They must make a pretty good penny and have a good laugh afterwards.
Sequel to below ! Charged €685 for scratch on rear door which is not visible on our post rental photos. However as we returned car before 6am we are apparently responsible for car until Thrifty/Hertz see fit to do inspection, in our case 10.11am ! Scratch looks straight approx 6cm and looks suspiciously deliberate ! So not alone avoid Thrifty/Hertz in Shannon also avoid returning car out of hours !!
This is terrible. From what I understand these companies are actually independent from the rental companies, it would not surprise me to learn that there is one organization running all of these companies and they all have this scam in place. I am shocked that nothing is being done to close this. I'm sure it's happening daily.
I rang Garda headquarters but no interest shown as civil matter.I shall continue to try and pursue the matter.
@@marybuckenham5023 Good luck. I wonder if approaching the airport themselves would help? Informing them that people are looking at alternate airports due to this scam
I have rung twice only to be told that the agent who checked the car is ‘unavailable today’ !! I have also noticed that the photo evidence of the scratch they provided is headed by the wrong rental agreement number !! This makes me even more suspicious that I am being charged for damage to another car.
we are having a similar problem with Hertz Shannon currently.Alleged scratch on rear driver side door. They have taken full €2000 while sorting out the claim ! Beware of Hertz Shannon.Renting cars for over 30 years.Never had this problem before.
Fake Damage issue - Hertz Shannon Airport Scam. Avoid them at all costs. So called customer damage. Barely drove the car, on main & quiet roads to and from my parents house to the airport. Returned the car out of hours to short term car park, got my flight. Checked it over thoroughly with my wife and it was fine. Received an email saying they were charging me 993euro for customer damage, showed me a picture of 3 small scrapes under the front left bumper. I refute and contested it. A day later they emailed me to say they were only going to charge me 476 euro, obviously part of the scam, as if they are doing me a favour. Happened to me at the end of August 2021. Hertz Claims department are also complicit in the scamming. I logged a case got a reply the next day from someone in customer service, no name, no case number, no job title, no place of work, just Hertz Customer Service, saying they looking into the case and found no wrong doing and I was liable for the damage. Ran in to others who had similar issues. Its morally wrong and unjust what Hertz Ireland are doing to their customers. It is truly appalling that they can get away with it in 2021. Please avoid these Hertz scammers.
I booked a car online and took out insurance online with the same company when I went to get the car the rental company refused to accept the online companies insurance and only for the importance of the trip and the need for a car I would have gladly shoved that car where the sun does not shine these are glorified scammers no other word for it.
Happened to me in Dublin, I booked a car through Hertz on line and paid the full fee with 0000 to pay at pickup. When I arrived in Dublin they would not accept my insurance with Allianz and demanded I give them a 5000 Euro holding deposit, I nearly fainted. They then took $911 out of my account and by the time I got to my hotel they had taken out another $580. It was such a shock. Every time I tried to call them I couldn't get through. After my holiday I take the car back and they check it and say just sign here to acknowledge return of the car so I do, it was like an small iPad. While I'm flying home to Australia Hertz then charge me another $678, They apparently charged me for the whole rental again and petrol to boot. I took it back full. My bank has so far only been able to get back the $580 but they are still fighting for me. The people all over Ireland were amazing by the way and it appears only to be Hertz, Ireland that are scammers. I have rented many times with Hertz in England and Australia and New Zealand with no problems
Hertz Hurt :-) This is why I hate renting cars
I also got scammed in Shannon. Read their google reviews, hundreds of customers get scammed every year in Ireland when renting from Hertz. The Hertz in Ireland are franchises not the actual company
I took this up with Hertz and their attitude was really one of not caring. It's interesting that with your credit card you can get free car rental CDW, but it excludes certain countries, Ireland being one. Why would that be ?
@@GPYCROFT I'll be flying into Northern Ireland next time. Who has 5000 euros lying around as a holding deposit? It's $500 in England in AUD and $200 in Australia
Surprised your'e surprised! This is quite common when renting cars, it's how they make their profits & reason for all the small print.
No this is not common. I travel a lot in my business life, I have the Hertz Gold Card and must have rented easily between 300-500 cars over the past few years. This is the ONLY time I ever had this experience. They make their money on the insurance they sell you.
I was just reading online that the Irish independent did some kind of an investigation So I guess people are aware
The exact same thing happened to me in Dublin Airport with Irish Car Rentals except for the location of the scratch which in my case was under the fog light, like your story it was less than an inch and you would have to bend down to even see it I was told not to worry about it . I couldn't believe it when I got a bill for almost 500 euros I am still fighting it but I'm not getting anywhere
That is disgusting ! I wish I could help you as it STILL anoys me that this is allowed to happen. It's interesting if you look at the credit car insurance coverage credit companies provide ( if you don;t know many credit cards give a form of credit card insurance ), they exclude places you would expect that are "troubled", but they also exclude Ireland, why? Have they seen too many instances of this? We need to try to elevate this scam to more people. I'm going to write on TripAdvisor as a reminder.

Stop saying "Oh, shame on Shannon and all the rentals there. That's how they get excess money. It's not all of Shannon, so it's wrong to say it is.
Last week, at the Cork airport - scratch on bottom of the bumper - that I don't recall doing - 812euros. But funny, when I reported that the visor mirror was broken, but I noticed that the last day - simply because I normally don't use it, I was told by the staff, that they are aware of it, but it was not in a the pre-inspection report. From now on, I'll be taking 50 detailed pics. Also, a few years ago, when I collected the car, there was a huge burned out hole in the back seat, like done by a cigar - I only discovered it by accident, but immediatelly returned to report it, without collecting the car - and I was told by the clerk, that it was ok to report it the next day. But, my 3rd party insurance would not cover any interior damage + I'm sure the would charge me not only for the damage, but also for smoking in the car (I don't smoke). After all they wrote it on the report and I took the car, back then, I had a cold and could not breathe properly, but the next morning, I could smell that either the previous customer, or the staff smoked inside the car and I reported it - they called me within half an hour, apologized and offered me a new car. But I was too far away to get another car, so I reclined, as I simply had no time and had the car just for the weekend. Then I was told they will charge me just for one day, instead of 2. But that was Avis, not Hertz. I emailed Hertz, that I think it's unacceptable, when you're renting a luxury car that is not particularly cheap, one side of the car is completely covered by bird poo. The staff just laughed, but did nothing - FYI - there are no trees in the car park - looked like some of the staff or someone used the car the day before. And also be aware how much gas do you have in the tank. I've had an experience, when someone already driven 120km since last refill (and forgot to reset the settings)
That's horrific ! 812 Euros ???? The pre-inspection report is a key part of the scam. First is it provided when you depart ? It should be, I rent cars a LOT and it should always be in the car with you when you drive away. My visit here that wasn;t the case and immediately triggered a suspicion that something was wrong. Now I've spoken to MANY rental companies and the general rule is that if the scratch can be convered by a quarter then it's not an issue. At Shannon that didn;t apply, the scratch I had was well under that size and they wanted to have me pay damages. Now before leaving I video the car, it's a 45 second job but well worth the time.
This is typical of car rental companies world wide, NOT Shannon alone. It has happened to me on 3 occasions in the UK - I never rent cars anymore
That’s why you get the SCDW
Brunson Powner SCDW = Scam and collision damage waiver. I don't take out insurance against criminal activity.
Hertz scammed me a Shannon in 2000, 19 years ago. I never forgot, but I fought it with the help of Visa and got my $500 for damage I did not do refunded after a time.
I have been to Ireland on several occasions, and all those times I rented happily with Dan Dooley. This time around I used Hertz. They were great at the counter, gave me a bump to the next car level. He asked me if I wanted "wheel coverage" and I told him no. He agreed it probably was not necessary. Anyway, you know how it is when you arrive in country after a long 6+ nighttime trip......you are beat! I never noticed that he slipped back in the wheel coverage before I signed. I spoke to corporate Hertz about this and even put a hold on the charge with American Express, but it didn't do any good. Hertz told me that the location in Shannon was under private ownership. Bottom line: I WILL NEVER DO BUSINESS AGAIN WITH HERTZ HERE IN THE STATES OR IN IRELAND. IRELAND WAS A TOTAL SCAM IN MY OPINION. TRAVELER'S BEWARE!!!!!!!!
Hi David, thanks for sharing this but sorry you had such a bad experience. I can't believe a company the size of Hertz still tolerates this. The more people share their bad experiences hopefully the louder the message will become that they need to fix this rogue outfit.
Thanks for the heads up! I'm just starting to research car rental companies in Ireland, and Hertz will not be on my list. Do you happen to have any suggestions on what is a reputable car rental company in Ireland? I believe I will be flying into Shannon airport. I heard it's easier to maneuver in and out of Shannon airport.
Sorry I wouldn't like to suggest who to work with as I suspect this scam is happening with multiple suppliers. My suggestion would be that whoever you rent from video the car before driving off. I would even consider videoing INSIDE the car as I recently had an issue where a rental car company had an issue with the interior !
I have used Dan Dooley out of Shannon on several occasions with a good experience. Don’t use Hertz!
I worked for hertz for years they r shady af....they give a damn about their employees let alone clients.
CASSANDRA JONES sorry to hear that. I’m still disgusted at this situation. Hertz didn’t care about the issue and made a minimal gesture to satisfy me.
love it! :)) im very glad for Katrine
Great vid ;-)
