As the girls arrive in their stunning outfits, the stalls are set up and ready for a busy day of trading, and the men sit down to eat breakfast and share rice wine. The stalls are piled high with brightly colored traditional outfits, handmade incense, and mounds of fresh fruit and vegetables. As well as the people, there are also hoards of animals at this market. From the big, slow buffalo and scampering pigs to cages of chirping birds and broods of chickens. One of the most famous dishes from this mountainous region is Thang Co, a hot and aromatic soup served from market stalls to crowds of people perched on small benches. Another comfort food to ward off the cold is Au Tau, a Ha Giang version of the classic rice gruel dish which is slightly bitter in taste. Five-color sticky rice is also another signature dish of this northern province. This can be found at any market and is much a treat for the eyes as it is for the stomach. A delicious snack to pick up along your travels through the magnificent mountains is Trung Cuon. Ha Giang’s rolled egg dish, where an egg is rolled into delicate rice paper and then steamed. To accompany the distinctive local dishes, Ha Giang offers some beverages which are unique to the area. As well as the usual offerings of the potent and intoxicating rice wine, Thanh Van corn wine is also a popular drink. Made from the corn grown in the area, the local people have developed a filtration system that makes for a cleaner, less toxic product. You can find this regional favorite at markets where people warm themselves after a hard day’s work, bonding over a cup or two of corn wine. Ha Giang has always been one of the most attractive destinations for visitors seeking the pure beauty of Vietnam’s nature and people. The spectacular scenery of green mountains, stunning rice terraces, winding rivers, flower valleys, and serpentine roads are the distinguishing features of this Northeastern province. Ha Long Bay, Vietnamese Vinh Ha Long (“Where the Dragon Descends to the Sea”), the bay on the northwest coast of the Gulf of Tonkin, near the city of Ha Long (Hong Gai), Quang Ninh province, northern Vietnam. Situated 164 km southeast of Hanoi, the 1,500-square-km area contains some 3,000 rocky and earthen islands, typically in the form of jagged limestone pillars jutting out from the sea, and several caves and grottoes, all of which blend together to produce an exotic and picturesque seascape. A diverse population of marine and land mammals, reptiles, fish, and birds are found in the waters and tropical forests. According to the age-old tale, Ha Long Bay was created by the descent of a mother dragon that, along with her children, came to protect the bay against a fearsome invasion. It is said that the dragons spat emeralds from their mouths toward their enemies and that those jewels transformed into jewel-like islands and islets. It is from this legend that the area takes the name Ha Long Bay which translates as “Bay of the Descending Dragons.” Ha Long Bay was honored twice to be recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage site in 1994 and 2000 with the value of the natural landscape, geology, and geomorphology. The pride of Quang Ninh and Vietnam kept multiplying when Ha Long Bay again surpassed 200 wonders from more than 200 countries and territories to enter the top 7 new natural wonders of the world in 2011. The average age of the islands is between 250 and 280 million years old. Ha Long Bay was called by the wonderful national poet Nguyen Trai: A marvel of the earth erected towards the large skies. There are various names given to islands based on their shapes and forms. Like the ecosystem of coral reefs with 232 species of coral distributed mostly in the areas of Cong Do and Bo Hon. It’s also home to 81 species of Gastropoda, 55 species of Polychaeta, 130 species of Bivalvia, and 57 species of crabs. The ecosystem of saltwater-flooded forests is mainly concentrated in the areas of the Tuan Chau area. It’s the most diversified collection of species of saltwater flooded plants in North Viet Nam. Besides, living in this ecosystem is a plentiful species of animals: migrating birds, Polychaeta, seaweed, and reptile.
