Part two of making the Neck. Enjoy!
It sounds brilliant and looks great! In fact I love how it looks unfinished, the black and white wood is striking. And wow it sounds great. It's a big sound like a dreadnought flat top but it has that archtop focus as well. Very cool. I'm curious, what if anything might you hear in a sound check that would cause you to make adjustments to the instrument?
Thank you for your comment. In case that the sound is still a bit thin and tight I could open it up more by slightly thinning down the Top an Back to increase the flexibility.

Hello Michael! I’m fascinated by this strut feature of your guitar. Does the strut allow you more easily build the guitar lightly with regards to the thickness of sides and back and top? If not what would you say is the main purpose of the strut? New hobby builder here. Love your videos! Thank you
Thank you for your comment. The strut is primarily a structual feature. The idea is ( not my original idea! ) to distribute the tension along the strut and between the Neck - and Bottomblock i. e. reducing the tension in the Top and Back.
Assembling the Body of an Archtop Guitar. Enjoy!
great videos thanks for it.... one question: is the top completely flat or does it have a little "bow" on the front? thanks
Thank you for your comment, the Top is domed in the lower bout and flat in the upper bout.
Where did you get or how did you make the f-holes templates?
I designed them myself, drawing and cutting them out on white cardboard with a fine knife.
@@breyguitars1994 thanks for the response! Beautiful work!
I like that sanding technique you used to do the final brace fitting. Had not seen it before. I just have an Eastman acoustic arch top, which is OK. It has X bracing. Do you have a preference of X versus parallel? Or do you just build what clients ask for? Cheers
Thank you for your comment. I got the idea with the sanding technique from Ken Parker. I choose the style of bracing according to the sound that my clients ask for. Parallel for a more powerful, cutting sound and X for a mellower, sweeter sound.
@@breyguitars1994 Thanks Michael. Keep up the nice work!
Bracing the Spruce Top of a 17" acoustic Archtop Guitar. Enjoy!
Would it be possible for a modern luthier to build a premium carved top using only the same tools as John D'Angelico? I've tried to find out where his shop equipment ended up. I believe that a good place for his tools would be the Smithsonian Institution.
Carving the Back for an Archtop Guitar. Enjoy!
What species of wood are you using for the center strip and braces?
I am using Alpine Spruce for both, the braces and the center strip.

No underrated at all. One of the legit guitar greats!
❤❤❤❤❤
I look forward to your carving video...now making flat top steel strings, with a bias towards hand tools and plan to make an arch top sometime in the future;)
Preparing the Top and Back for an Archtop Guitar, ready for carving. Enjoy!
Hi Michael question: Do you glue the the spacer blocks that you put in at the top where the sides stop at the heel?
Hi Tim, yes the blocks are glued with hide glue.
Bill is the most underrated guitar player ever. That solo on “For a Thousand Years” is simply one of the most beautiful I’ve ever heard.
I totally agree!
@carloscappellini1687 I totally agree w/ part of your sentiment (ie: Bill Frisell is one of the great guitar players in the history of the instrument). But for quite a while now (a couple decades, I'd say) he's regularly acknowledged as part of the triumvirate of modern electric jazz guitar playing (Metheny, Frisell, & Scofield). If the people you read, and the folks you hang with, underrate or diss Frisell, you need a new crowd ;)
No mistaking Joey's drumming, heard it right off. 👍
Marc Johnson, "Sound of Summer Running", the only album they played together. I always thought they should do more
Incredibly beautiful, thank you! 🎶🩵🎶💙
Thank you for another interesting episode Michael. I am about to start construction of my first classical guitar and I find your series very helpful whilst also admiring the amount of handwork that goes into your guitars. On a technical note, assuming a 3mm arch in the soundboard, do you angle the neck during construction to achieve the correct bridge height?
Hello Gordon, I do not angle my necks. I achieve the correct height with a thicker fingerboard and a low bridge. Good luck for your first Classical.
Fitting and gluing the Back for a Classical Guitar. Enjoy!
They evoke the best in each other. True artistic collaboration.\
Thank you

Making the Back for a Classical Guitar. Enjoy!
Hi Michael, I am gearing up for my first classical construction and found your series very insightful, so thank you for that. One question, what material is the stabilizing bar?
Hi Gordon, thanks for your comment. The Material is Carbon Fibre.
Excellent work! Excellent music playlist 😎 your linings and side aupports appear to be about 3mm…..correct?
Thanks for your comment. The linings are 4mm and the side supports 3mm.
@@breyguitars1994 thanks for getting back to me! Very well done video. I have been building acoustic steel strings since 1978 nut am now starting to build classicals. Watching a master at work is very educational to me

Question About bridge placement On my last string change I think I have slighly moved my archtop mandolin bridge placement, giving tune up trouble. The bridge of any An archtop instrument Is moveable. Flat top is not. The bridge place ment of the lute and oud is lower ( closer to the tail further from sound hole ) than her guitar cousin. For my guitar (oudtar Guy Thierry type ) design I want to place the bridge lower closer to the tail further from the sound hole . The short of it is (move the bridge down)
Thanks for your comment. What is your question?
Hi, make sure that the distance from the bridge to the 12th fret position is slightly longer than the distance from the nut to the 12th fret. Maybe 1- 3 mm depending on the type of strings. If the fretted note of all strings at the 12th fret is in unison with the harmonic played at the 12th fret, then you have the correct position.
@@breyguitars1994 That 1mm or 3mm Distance is,influenced, By the string thickness And is, determined, By the ,saddle, ??
@@breyguitars1994 So I cannot do an A1."oud lute " aka "lower" Aka "nearer the tail" placement. That harmonic sound will Not occur at the 12th Fret. With such an A1 bridge placement. Is that correct?? And is the 12th fret Harmonic phenomenon "Proof of" correct positioning
Archtop bridge placement is easily Manipulated, played with, changed. Let say on an unfinished face. Making that adjustment On a finished sound board is other. On a flat top impossible.
The first soundcheck of a new Archtop Guitar. Enjoy!
Hello and congrats for this video and for your fantastic work 😮 Can you tell me the name of the tool that we can see at 04:30 ? Where can I find it?
