At 68 yrs I've decided to learn to play a melodic instrument - the marimba. I've spent most of my life as a drummer, so we will see if that gives me an advantage over time. I'm having a lot of fun, and in the meantime I'm hoping these videos will document the progress I've been making since I started earlier this year, in 2021.
Pink Panther - Soft version
In this version I'm using ultra-quiet practice mallets from malletech. They are called Late Night or LN . They are big and spongy, so they don't sound bell-like at all, but they do evoke a cat's paws sneaking around, per the composition. This eliminates a lot of the dissonance that occurs with regular mallets playing this piece.

A lovely composition by Henri Mancini. This piece separates the men from the boys. I remain an adolescent. The thing about it is that it uses just about every note on the vibraphone, from the low F to the high F. Plus there are a lot of two octave two note chords which I had one hell of a time getting right. Arrangement by Will Rapp. It has some beautiful dissonances. I like to call it: "Kitten...

I think this sounds pretty good on the double seconds.
Adult Learner II: Why you should not take up the vibraphone!

The vibraphone is absolutely the worst instrument to learn as an adult learner. You have to be a total fanatic to take it up at my age. My advice: Don't do it!

The more I play this song, the more I love it. It is so simple and beautiful. I tried to hold back and play softly and slowly to get across the moodiness and reflective sense of this song.

Even though I've had these beautiful steel drums for quite a while I'm basically a beginner. This is my first video on steeldrums. The fact is I couldn't play them properly until I had learned to play the marimba. After that the steel drums made much more sense to me. I hope to be recording many more of these videos as I make more progress. The steel pan manufacturer of these double seconds is ...

An old standard. I love the harmonies and the chromatic passages in this thing.

This song has such a great rhythmic feel to it and it's perfect for the marimba.
Adult Learner, two years on

It's been two years since I started learning to play the marimba. I've since added two more keyboard percussion instruments and the steel drums. I advocate patience and perseverance and being careful about comparing oneself to the pros.

Where can I get the sheet music you used?
I think it's from "The first fifty songs you should play on Marimba", and the other name for it is choucoune. I highly recommend this book if you are new to marimba.
I loved the ending so much, thanks for sharing. I am gonna go practice some bass now! Have a great day!
Thanks, Charles!
Thank you, Charles.
awesome!
Thanks!
lovely!
Got the toes tapping
Awesome tone and performance
The gongs add a little resonance!
Thanks Eric! I spent a bit of time and money to get them, actually one of them I bought back in the sixties in Chinatown, but the latest ones, took a little research to all find in Canada. I would have bought more, but I ran out of space in my studio.
What a phenomenal set you have there Charles! Thanks for sharing the potency of the gongs, I LOVE them!!! Namaste :) <3 (((HUG)))
Thanks Eric.
This is like tag-team wrestling!
Resoect you orca survivor

Yes. I think at the time that was as fast as I could play it without making a mistake.
nice piece!
Thanks!
sounds good, nice resonance
nice
this has no right to slap this hard!
Huh?
It really doesn't. Well done!
amazing content! from Kris in Prince Rupert!
nice!
my first though.. he’s wearing a gong too!!! lol. i love all the options!!! fourth from the left though! ❤️
Fourth from the left is a 20" Chinese Wind Gong, or Lion Gong, because it roars! Third from Left is a 26"Sabian Zodiac. Made in Canada. I've had the Wind Gong for thirty years, and now putting it up there with all those more expensive gongs I've realized how exceptional it is.
@@earthjustice01 they all have their place for sure. some just stand out!
@@diddykong-jz4nb Indeed!

aweome, this song sounds so good on the xylophone, otherworldly!
Great sound! Are you recording that with a computer?
Thanks John. I'm using my Samsung phone. I'm trying to keep as simple as possible.
Reminds me a bit of the time when a Chinese freighter crew came ashore in salt lakes from fishing in the harbour and walked around before leaving.-The next day they returned with a box of supplies including Chinese beer and herbal medicines, This time one spoke English and asked what they had done to have to live there, How is the fishing?
Looking forward to a video tour of the cabin, Charles.
Love it Charles! We listened 2x and are now humming it! Thanks for the inspiration!
Some good sounding hanks there! Keep up the good work!
