Mother was born in Dowlais (Gwladys Astley) and her side of the family still live in Merthyr. Really enjoyed this video as I’m a sucker for Welsh history, particularly relating to industrial revolution. With the natural resources Wales had it should have been and still be one of the richest countries in the world. Just like today, foreign owners took the money and got rich on the profits.

@@keithlewisjones yeah all good , refurbing house in Council st Penydarren , oldest ex Council houses in Merthyr as you know , seventh one now ! Renting them out for our pension We aren’t getting any younger Glad you’re keeping well

Thank you for sharing this film - I didn't even know it existed. So sad, to see the last train before final closure. If only all those people present had used the line in the years before hand.......
I understand the buses was a lot quicker than the train. while they had finished passenger services I understand they still ran goods trains for a few more days before the line really closed down. everything remained in place during the 1930s before the stock and rails was cut up for scrap for the war effort. sleepers was sold for fire wood. some thought they could reopen the railway to help the war effort but this never happened

There was an Open University programme quite a few years ago about the brass band that the Cyfartha family supported. John Wallace recorded a lot of the music with his band, the Wallace Collection on instruments found there or of a similar vintage. I have the CD somewhere. Fascinating stuff if you're into historically informed performance and/or brass band music.

I also had the privilege of going to Cyfarthfa Castle School . What a learning experience ..
I remember watching this as a teenager.
