I have ended up here, looking to be informed with how to proceed with complaining, that leads to results. I have been a social housing tenant for 13 years. Every time l have had an issue, or a complaint, or concern, the response l have had has been abysmal. Now, l am considering involving a solicitor. I have been contacted by solicitors, who handle tenants complaints, but l do not understand why social housing would add legal costs to the cost of the repair. I have just taken photos of the many issues I have. I am going to send these in with a stern covering letter. However, they didn’t even acknowledge my last letter. I telephoned to discuss their disinterest, and an appointment was made to deal with only one of my concerns. I feel organisations are trained in not dealing with issues as it has an impact on profit. They have weirdly told me that an inspector will be calling to do a ‘five year’ check. This person came, saw the issues, but nothing was confirmed even when he stated l would hear from them in a fortnight.

Speak to your neighbour, truly spoken by a professional that hasn't got a clue of the danger that victims face! Please do not advise residents to speak to dangerous perpetrators, for example drug dealers and offenders. I was ignored for 2 years by Peabody, despite keeping a diary and recordings on the Noise App, all ignored by the Police, Council and Landlord. We are fed up of offenders getting support when the law abiding residents are harassed & threatened. Enough is Enough! The Police and Social Housing Associations need to take firm action. Be a considerate resident and make your community a better place, if you don’t, then leave! Landlords, demote tenancies and evict!

Hay, I'm in the same boat as Janene as in we have advertised and have a lot of influence panels and groups etc, with the same few tenants or demographics that are actively involved. I loved the suggestion to use the coffee mornings, dog walking, kids groups etc as a way to reach them but how do we turn that from more engagement into influence? I find these methods can get a lot of "Ad hoc" feedback that's great for recording engagement but how do we use these as a way for tenants to make changes? Especially covering large areas.

Another great session Matt, thanks Charlotte. With so many of us offering such simple solutions we have to start asking 'where is the barrier?'

Thanks again for having me along to talk about the Housing Ombudsman's report on Knowledge & Information Management. Getting data management right can literally save lives, and the opposite is true, as we've sadly seen from so many tragedies with their foundations in poor data management.

Great presentation

I listened to about the first 15 minutes of this discussion before anger took over and I had to stop and do a bit of research. According to media reports, after Awaab Ishak's death, this social landlord still left hundreds of tenants for nearly 2 years exposed to the harmful mould. So, as a social housing tenant, and qualified housing professional, the question I am asking is where were the legal representatives, politicians, housing ombudsman, regulator and other parties that should have been available to proactively respond to complaints? Moreover, there is so much legislation available to protect social housing, and other, tenants so why were these not being used and/or effective? There is something seriously wrongheaded about deaths prompting discussion rather than just providing tenants with tools, such as, adequate legal aid so that they are 'empowered' to execute their legal rights, without fear of repercussions, instead of being faced with battling very bureaucratic, government imposed, complaints processes. Seriously, how many tenants have the resources to take on this battle? Therefore, maybe accountability needs to be firmly grounded in the human, and other, rights of tenants first and foremost. Furthermore, tenants need to know what these are and how to enforce them.

I do not feel that this discussion really looked at the 'community effect' and focused more on the needs of supported housing residents. However, the ASB statutory guidance is clear from the outset that victims should be put first. For instance, trauma-informed practice was mentioned quite a number of times in the discussion without acknowledgement that this approach also needs the be applied to the individuals, and communities, that are victims of ASB. This leads me to wonder, in the supported housing context, who should be held accountable for ASB (staff or residents); and, whether ASB indicates a lack of competencies, such as, not providing adequate support. Hence, maybe the spotlight needs to be placed on what constitutes good practice in supported housing that serves to consider a trauma-informed practice for all parties involved and not be reluctant to take effective action, such as, staff dismissals, community injunctions or resident evictions where necessary. Overall, the discussion helped to broaden my scope in thinking about the complexities and challenges that attempting to effectively tackle ASB in housing, and protect victims, presents.
