QUICK STUDIO SET UP
When I travel (which is often) I have to set up a quick functioning studio. This has become my regular studio for now as I drive about 1000 miles every 3 months or so and stay for a couple months. YOU DON'T NEED A BIG FANCY STUDIO! I teach Internationally and have created Internationally Award Winning paintings from this!
YOU CAN TO)!

PASTELS: Colorfast Tests
Просмотров 81Месяц назад
A personal experimentation with various pastel sticks and how lightfast they are. This is not in any way official, but there's a procedure here than any of us can use to test the color fast quality of our painting supplies. You can use this approach for watercolor, oil, acrylic, .. any painting medium. Again: this is NOT an official experiment. ~ TravelingArtista.com patreon.com/travelingartista

How to Fix the "Little Soldiers" in a Painting
Просмотров 1412 месяца назад
After I finished a workshop demo painting, which looked fine, the painting was turned on its side and revealed .. "little soldiers" !! Elements of the painting lined up in perfect equidistant lines - just like trained soldiers. But in nature, irregularity rules. And it makes for a more interesting painting. This process is one way to Fix the Little Soldiers. When I mention taking a painting out...
“It Whispers to Me”. Creative Portrait

I’ve been working on pastel portraits again, which I love. I approach them rather intuitively, allowing the painting process to help guide me. I sometimes feel like the image emerges from the substrate in a way similar to how Michelangelo chipped away marble to reveal and set free a figure that was already held captive within. The resulting portraits often surprise even me. The video is under 1...

There are synthetic pigments available .. but, again, I'm not sure for Africa. Amazon does sell some pigments, but you would have to research more details. I like the before better. It just feels more balanced with the mid ground. The after version the field on the left seems to overshadow the figures. Perhaps make the field further back in that version. But the feeling of intimacy and sharing secrets is to me stronger in the before version.

      @TravelingArtista 4 месяца назад

      Thank you, Ucreate3, for this comment. Interesting. I do feel like the latter part has become overworked. But since it fell off the board at the end, I could adjust it quite well ... if I decide to do so. Or I may just start the image from scratch. Your critique helps me think in a new direction!

    Thank you for that review. I have been gifted a 25 year old set of Winsor Newton soft pastels, and recently bought a set of Marie's. I have been trying unsuccessfully to paint with both sets, and my addiction to bright colours has made the WN disappointing ... more suited I think to landscapes, although particularly soft. The Marie's are quite firm and chalky, so I may try to learn more with these before deciding if this is the medium for me. I love seeing artists review budget supplies, as you are more likely to know the qualities of these. Thanks again.

    • @TravelingArtista
      @TravelingArtista 5 месяцев назад

      The WinsorNewton soft pastels should be great! You can layer and blend them, of course, to get a huge range of colors and hues. I've never heard of Marie's. So many options these days! The Mungyo have some great bright color choices and the price might help you try. Otherwise if you want POWERFUL color, try Terry Ludwig or Diane Townsend soft pastels. They cost more, of course, as they are higher quality, but the colors are so pure! Also, are you using sanded paper? Check DakotaPastels.com for some sample packs.

    Thank You for the tutorial :) I would like to create a pastel painting using your formula to make pastels sticks straight from pigments & a binder. This painting will be given to my nephew who lives in a tropical climate, My only concern is mold & mildew so does • Distilled water or isopropyl alcohol act as a preservative? If not; do you have any recommendations like framing/and or fixative that can preserve a pastel painting in humid climates?

    • @TravelingArtista
      @TravelingArtista 5 месяцев назад

      kh, I thought I had responded to this (sorry, if not, and sorry, if I'm repeating). Mold and mildew can be a big problem so keeping the painting dry and mold-free before framing is vital. Alcohol kills the mold & mildew as you make the pastel sticks. When framing, be sure it is done in a very dry place and the edges around the sandwich of glass, mat, painting and backing are sealed when it's very dry. I use an art or framing tape to seal the edges. Put about ⅛ inch over the front of the edge of the glass, carefully wrap it around to the back and press firmly. Be sure the tape goes all around the edge of the "sandwich". This should keep your painting secure in a very dry state. Then it pops into the frame.
