A Novel Review
Великобритания
Добавлен 11 апр 2023
Hi, my name is Seamus and I run the podcast, A Novel Review.
I have a deep love of literature and history, studying both and university and doing my masters in Archaeology and Research.
What I love about podcasting is, it is a chance to (hopefully) bring attention of books I love, and share them with a wider audience.
I hope you find an episode on a book you had never heard of and then feel inspired to read it!
If you have suggestions, let me know.
Happy listening!

To follow and support us, click here: anovelreviewpodcast.com I open at the close and today, after 7 books and 7 months, we come to the end of the Harry Potter journey. We are back for the final time for the magical finale where wands are swapped, lives are lost, and Horcruxes take the ultimate beating. You will make it big my guy
@@AA-so1xs Thankyou :) That’s incredibly nice to hear and I really appreciate it!!
Just a suggestion- I have been really enjoying listening to your reviews. However, I can’t watch some (like this one) because I don’t want spoilers. So perhaps you could have the beginning segment of the episode spoiler free so that we can still hear your thoughts!
I love it, thankyou so much for the feedback, I think that's a great idea. I am going to do my best to structure the episodes this way from now!!
I can see that scene with Voldemort being impactful. I think that we do get more of these scenes throughout this book especially since he uses occlumens against Harry and the only times we get glimpses of his emotions is when it breaks through Harry's mind, perhaps initially it was the accumulation of all the scenes which made this particular place more memorable to you.
Thanks for the comment :) You are right, its the emotion behind it. Watching Voldemort through the books be patient and calculating, but then to see these emotional outburst as we watch him start to slowly realise and lose grip of his power!!
Ron and Hermione were made for each other and it was obvious.
Couldn’t agree more! I hadn’t even considered an alternative until I read it! 😂
My favorite book too but parts of the movie make me want to pull my hair out.
My favourite but the film was such a let down to what it could have been! One of the main reasons I am kind of excited for the new series!!
8:51 this one never rly stood out to me (order of the phoenix apologist and proud!!!) but you talking abt the mundanity of it all is making me want to reread it 🥺 so comforting
Thanks for the comment! I have found it so interesting the love and dislike for both Order and Half-Blood. Most people seem to like one and not that other haha! The comfort is just so comforting though. A great one for the colder months :)
unfortunately ootp is book where a lot is happening and yet nothing really happens. it's the filler arc
It was my least favourite!
completely agree with what you said about the floo powder scene! it never made sense to me why they would make harry look incompetent with something so simple, especially when we’re meant to view him as the chosen one. the book scene made so much more sense!
Thankyou! Yes, such a ridiculous scene and it made for some really poor writing!!
Fyi mudblood doesnt referr to muggles its a word for people with magical power that have muggles as parents. Half blood has one parent a witch/ wizard and one a muggle
@@Zach-fu8wn thanks for the comment and for pointing that out! That makes it really clear to understand :)
I support this channel idea thoroughly
@@kindasickngl9246 Thankyou that really means a lot :)
wym with "don't even know if dumbledore was in the last book", that book was all about dumbledore's army, the order of the phoenix (aka dumbledores order) etc and the rest of the books he makes a lot of appearances
Thanks for the comment! It is a 'tongue in cheek' comment about the fact that Dumbledore is largely absent from 'Order of the Phoenix' because he is avoiding Harry. Of course, there is a lot of references to him, (the Order itself and Dumbledor's Army), but this isnt Dumbledor himself getting solid screen time in the books!
Amazing video, allways great to find another Seamus out there too!
Thanks for the comment Seamus! I have met so few Seamus' out there, it is great to find another :)
Nice video as always! Also we do indeed call them carboot sales (In the UK at least)
Haha cheers for letting me know! I was worried it was just an Aussie thing
as someone who as never read a Bond book OR watched a Bond movie, this was an interesting glimpse into that universe. the quote about the heroes and villains struck me as really progressive for a book from the 50s! edit: will there be an episode about "call me stan"? sounds quite interesting!
That is pretty cool that you have never seen one of the films or books. Having now listened to the pod, does it sound like it interests you? It was a startlingly progressive quote which i think elevated the book quite a bit! Yes, there will be an episode on 'Call me Stan' it should come out late August/early September :)
@@ANovelReview i think it's the kind of fictional universe that is most interesting to me, when other people talk about it/ analyze it, not really something I have to dig into myself - but if I see a second hand copy of on of the novels somewhere I might pick it up after watching this video, just out of curiosity. :)
@@rica3947 That is so fair! And that is also great to hear :)
Nice Content
Thanks for the comment and i'm glad you like it! :)
I agree with you about the fact that Harry behaves in really annoying and unfair ways in this book (especially towards Cho!) but that's actually something I personally really like about it! To me this book is mostly about Harry's emotional journey as a traumatized teenager continuously going through rough stuff. To me it would be kind of boring or annoying if Harry was able to handle all the horrible stuff he went through in a super mature way because firstly it's just A LOT with Cedric dying, Voldemort returning and most of the wizarding world turning against him and secondly where would he have learned healthy coping mechanisms for all the emotions that he's experiencing because of these things - certainly not from the Dursleys! So to me this book humanizes Harry quite a bit after he was rather calm and unreactive in the previous books. I also really enjoy how Hermione continuously calls him out on his shit when he starts being hot headed and unfair. It adds something to their friendship and shows how close they have become! Concerning the plot holes - JKR has addressed the thestrals, saying that you really have to understand and process the death, and be affacted by it, but personally I think that's kind of a cop out because while baby Harry might not have properly understood what was happening, he was definitely deeply affected by having his parents die. In Prisoner of Azkaban he even has flashbacks to his mother's death showing that part of him does actually remember it, so I think it should absolutely count for the thestrals. The aspect of Voldemort now having Harry's Blood and still not being able to attack him at the Dursley's is really interesting, I hadn't considered that before and I think it's a really good point. There's probably some arguments one could make against this but it definitely seems like a plot hole!
You are so right that Harry isn't equipped to deal with this kind of pressure and in a lot of ways i wanted to see more emotion from him, especially since he suffers a lot in Goblet. I think just reading the books back to back I was probably a bit fatigued myself and feeling like Harry 😂 Hermione was a star in this book, she really held it together I feel just calling Harry out which was great to see! Thanks for commenting about the plot holes, I can see what JKR was trying to do with the Thestrals and the death of his innocence but yeah, it doesn't fully stick and the blood remains a mystery.. Thankgoodness they are such fun books that we can excuse the occasional plot hole!
I agree this is the most fun, it's also the expanding of the magical world outside Hogwarts. I don't agree with "she could have started with this book". Controversial indeed 😂😂 What about voldemort trying to come back with the philosopher's stone? Destroying the diary? Sirius? Pettigrew scaping? All necessary, the journey, the friendships growing... Of course the returning is the climax of all that build up. But if you started with that it would've felt too rush.
Haha controversial indeed. Don't get me wrong, I love the early books because I love being at Hogwarts. I kind of love the idea you floated that the early books build to Voldemorts return and then the second half goes from that moment. Makes it feel like a theatre production with an act 1 and 2 which I love!
I also think this is the weakest of the series (agree with the "what could had been if Rowling had more freedom" ) but is just so iconic and whimsical and cozy that it always ends up in my top 3.
When the dust settles, it is always hard to not love the first in a series for just purely being the introduction into a world we love!
7:40 wow! I never got that detail. Love it
It is a brilliant little easter egg!
Loved your review! This is my favourite book too. I think is because is finally revealed the true mission to accomplish with the horcruxes. That's when I understood why Chamber of Secrets had been my favourite until then too, I think I felt that diary and knowing Tom Riddle was just too important.
Thanks for the great comment :) I think you are so right, understanding Tom Riddle becomes an important plot point which links it back to Chamber. Defeating Voldemort is one thing but we have to know and understand Tom Riddle the man first! Brilliant thankyou!
what you said about pacing about Deathly Hallows is sooo real, it's insane that after half of the book they have only one Horcrux. Can't wait for the full video! :)
It makes for one hell of a ride for the last half of the book!!
For what you just said, James Bond reads as a soft porn for straight men at this point! This was a fun episode and i already ordered the book, thanks haha
Thanks for the comment! Haha I hadn't thought of that but I like that - a soft porn for straight men! I am glad you enjoyed the ep and please let me know what you thought of it when you have read it :)
i am so curious about the scene! please tell us what it is, if it doesn't appear in Deathly Hallows, i gotta know! I also agree so much about what you say about the color being drained from the HBP movie - people say it's because the series got darker, but even in the darker books there is lots of fun and levity in between, especially in HBP! so much fun teenage drama, that doesn't fit the movie's vibe at all.
Thanks for the comment :) I will for sure tell you the scene in the next ep! Oh I know, it is such a shame because the book (while it is dark) is still so vibrant and broken up with a lot of humour and fun!!
I agree but please suggest some and I can add them to my ‘TBR’ list :)
His Dark Materials!
@@stressedoutofexistence663 Epic, thankyou for the rec! I will try find them and give them a read :)

Hello! I’ve just discovered your channel and I’m looking forward to more book reviews from you! Harry Potter is my favorite series so I was wondering, how would you rank the Harry Potter books and why?
Hey thanks for commenting! I have loved re-reading the Harry Potter series, it has been a great nostalgic trip. In the final episode the Deathly Hallows, i am going to be ranking the books :)
RUclips recommendations are working great
I am glad you are enjoying it :)
Yes they are
@@tarlochansingh620 thanks :)
I was going to comment a lot of stuff but WHAT IS THE SCENE??
Haha hey thanks for the comment! I will reveal the scene in the Deathly Hallows episode :)
@@ANovelReview Hahaha Thanks! Alright, I’ll check it out in the next video then! By the way, I’m really enjoying your channel, talking about books is almost as fun as reading them. I totally get what you mean when you say this book lets us “live” more of Hogwarts, and that’s something that got a bit lost in the later books. That’s what I’m most looking forward to in the series - having time to get to know the characters better, seeing the Quidditch drama, and having all the characters with their own personalities (somewhere along the way, they forgot to give Ginny a personality). About Dumbledore, I think his personality is interesting because he trusts people but doesn’t reveal secrets to anyone. Actually, a lot of the story’s problems seem to come from that flaw. One of my favorite parts is when Dumbledore’s brother (in the seventh book) talks to Harry, and he realizes that Dumbledore was just a human with a lot of issues, and that’s when he stops being this almost divine figure in the story. Great podcast, as always!
Thanks for listening :) I really appreciate it! Yes the books are so great for watching all the characters grow, its been quite nice to revisit them all again. I just finished the Deathly Hallows and I couldn't agree more, the humanisation of Dumbledore is refreshing and so valuable - the films really missed a lot of this great nuance the stories have!!
I'm your 100th subscriber 👍
You're a champion and you made my day :)
Yh but sometimes the reviews are fake to get you to keep reading it
That is so true and I had never considered that... And it worked on me because I decided to keep reading 😅
Yes Harry can be annoying but how many 15 year olds wouldn't be with all he's dealing with. He obviously has PTSD and survivor's guilt, he's being kept in the dark and ignored by Dumbledore, the majority of people think he's either an attention seeking liar or crazy, Umbridge is torturing him and he's seeing abd feeling Voldemort's emotions and thoughts. I think that's enough to put *anyone* on edge. Voldemort still isn't related to Harryby bloodline. Plus it wasn't *just* what Lily did that extended the protection to the home of Harry's blood relation...it's what Dumbledore did to extend that protection until Harry and his aunt *both* accepted that he would be leaving his "home" with no intention of returning.
Thanks for the comment :) You are right, I am treating Harry too harshly and I think in your comment you have highlighted the real reason this wasn't my favourite book. I wanted more Dumbledore, more information about what is actually going on but Harry is in the dark so we are in the dark!
@@ANovelReview I think in a way she wanted us to feel as frustrated as Harry was.
I think she more than succeded 😆 Would you say Order is your favourite HP?
@@ANovelReview nope. That would be the next book Half Blood Prince..despite the flood of teenage hormones at the school. God I remember when my twins (boy & girl) hit 16. It was a nightmare!
First person i have met that agrees that Half Blood Prince is the best! Dumbledore showing up, some solid fantasy action and yes, of course the teenage hormones taking me back to my first read!
Just like Trump...
To be fair I feel like people either love him or hate him absolutely so it's interesting to hear you think he's grey!
Begging you people to read more books
I will happily read more books! Did you have any books in mind?
I agree
Thanks Skylar :)
I always understand that harry started to see the thestrals after the trauma of witness death. I think he wasnt old enough to understand before. JK always links thestrals to the death of her mother and how it changed herself, so maybe thats why. He just wasn't mature enough to change himself after seing death. Also, yes, justice for cho!
Thanks for the comment and for taking the time to let me know about the Thestrals :) Haha justice for Cho!!
Just stumbled across your videos/podcast and enjoyed your analysis :) Order of the Phoenix was also my least favourite HP for all the reasons you mentioned - Prisoner of Azkaban still reigns supreme for me but Half-Blood Prince is definitely up there! Looking forward to your next episode :)
Thanks for the comment, I am glad you enjoyed it and that you felt the same about Order. I was surprised how much I loved Prisoner of Azkaban!
So true, follows a strict code, but they are evil and its a fucked up code
She's a bit too real for a fantasy story!
Ignoring the fact that PoA is the best book in the series, CoS sets up quite a few key pieces of the story like low key setting up Harry to be a horcrux.
I did say 'probably be fine' because of course you would still miss some small details that add to the story! POA being the best is you opinion thought because my favourite is Half-Blood Prince 😂
@@ANovelReview I don’t see how that’s a small detail it’s like most important plot point in the franchise but coming from someone who likes the most pointless book in the series it’s not really surprising you’d have such in off base argument.
Thanks! I will use a time turner, go back in time and relay your thoughts about the book being pointless to my younger self so I don't enjoy it as much 😉
Thank you for recommending "The Lost Estate". Ever since I've read "Piranesi" for the first time I've been searching for books with similar atmosphere. The only one that came close was a lovely weird novella, "Tainaron. Mail From Another City" by Leena Krohn. The two short stories by Jorge Luis Borges that inspired Susanna Clarke were amazing as well. They are "The House of Asterion" and "The Library of Bavel"
Le me know what you think! It was a weird, confusing but fever dream of a book with such an ethereal feeling to it. Thanks for letting me know about these other titles, I am going to add them to my list and try to find them! :)
Hello again, Seamus! I finished Philosophers Stone today, it was actually much more enjoyable than I expected and surprisingly gripping towards the end (I thought I'd comment on this video as it might help the alogrithm). Not sure if I'll go straight to Chamber of Secrets or read something else in between. I also just watched your Howl's Moving Castle video, and as a Welsh anime fan with a degree in archaeology I think just about every topic was geared towards me, haha.
Thats awesome and so fair not wanting to go straight into the next one. I would say that Philosophers Stone is the weakest of the series purely because it is the first and therefore has to lay a lot of foundation in a short period of time, but no rush to get into the next haha. That's epic that you're also an archaeologist! Do you have an area of focus?
@@ANovelReview That's good to know. I might try another short book from my childhood that I remember loving first though. And I'm sad to report that despite my archeology & anthropology degree I'm actually a web developer these days as I got much better job opportunities in it. I do still have many friends in the UK who are archaeologists though and I try to keep up with the field. But when I was in university my main focus was educating people on Welsh culture and mythology and that fact that it actually exists which most people seem unaware of despite it being thousands of years old. What do you do if you don't mind me asking? We could maybe talk about arch and the Harry Potter book on Instagram if you'd prefer? Cheers
@@Ziggy_Jones For sure, shoot me a message in Insta! IG: instagram.com/anovelreviewpod/
@@Ziggy_Jones Hi I just read your comment and I have a book recommendation for you, if you're interested, based on your interest and knowledge in Welsh mythology: I'm currently reading the Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater (a four part YA modern fantasy book series), where Welsh mythology is at the very center of the storyline. I do have to say that it is clearly written with a teenage/ young adult audience in mind, but I'm currently having lots of fun with it as a 27 year old as well. I also hope you're enjoying your Harry Potter journey - I read the series for the first time last year and was also quiet surprised by how much I liked them!
@@rica3947 Hi there, thanks for the suggestion, I'll be sure to check it out! I'd not heard of it before. Yes very much enjoying it thank you, nearly at the end of book 3 now!
Never heard of Stephan Donaldson, but this book of his sounds worth a read.
I had never heard of him either but so far it is a great series :) You have to start with the first for sure to get the background and the initial (terrible) act that Thomas commits..
Another great video, I actually just watched part 1 yesterday so good timing! Also, I did decide to start reading Harry Potter. Only 4 chapters in so far though because I'm quite a slow reader.
That's awesome mate! Stick with it, I found the first book a bit tough at the start but once the story gets going, it gets amazing :)
