    The definition of giftedness does not "depend". Or else it couldn't be tested for. It has a meaning. And that is okay. Preferable even.

  • @legalfictionnaturalfact3969
    @legalfictionnaturalfact3969 Месяц назад

    One thing is that only gifted/high IQ adults should be teaching gifted classes. It just isn't appropriate for adults under that level to be teaching gifted students. For a few reasons, not least of all that they cannot help but feel envious and take it out on the kids. I have seen it with multiple teachers. Often against me. They treat us with this crazy suspicion, always side eyeing and trying to knock us down. And I'm just like what? I asked an honest question. I'm curious. And I'm being punished. I mean hey, at least we're not them. That would suck. But we do need, ultimately, to get all kids out of the Prussian classroom model. It's extremely new in the history of education. Pretty much none of the historical figures we all respect and admire so much went and did their learning in classrooms. They had mentors and apprenticeships. They followed their noses and hung out together to discuss their disciplines. Universities and schools do not even come close. They dumb us down and brainwash us in the favor of the bankers that own said universities and schools.

    As a first year ESL/ESOL teacher who has taught in the general education classroom, after teaching for 22 year, this was awesome and helpful! My coworker was able to connect because he was an ESL/ESOL student. I found my connection to students because I had my degree in Spanish but was told not to translate so I lost some of my Spanish. I told them that as I review my Spanish, they will learn English. That was my connection!

    An exercise that I did once in class was this: we were all told to brainstorm how to make a government extremely unfair to certain groups of people while technically not including anything outright discriminatory in our pretend laws. Any laws that explicitly said something like, "don't let _______ group do this" were vetoed. So what did we come up with? Removing public transportation, building toll roads that got more expensive the closer you got to the nicer part of town, privatizing education, making laws that could easily be selectively enforced like jaywalking or smoking. Then we looked at real laws like that and were shocked at how many of our ideas were actually on the books and it was really eye-opening since a lot of us grew up on the more sheltered side of things

    I'm rusty with kids' books, but I'll definitely be checking out your library and would love suggestions from anybody who sees this comment. My nephew is 2, and my friend just had her first kid, and I'd love to get my nephew to read something other than his Lightning McQueen books lol

  • @msjkramey
    @msjkramey 7 месяцев назад

    As a kid, I could be really hardheaded and had a really difficult time putting myself in other people's shoes. Reading and watching certain media was so fundamental in getting me interested in people who weren't like me and learning how to read people's emotions and creating the "theory of the mind" in my own head. The ones that really stuck out to me were "Secondhand Lions," "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," "Holes," those beautiful Dreamworks Abrahamic movies, American Girl Doll books (Josefina's books in particular). Later it was "A Clockwork Orange," "The Things They Carried," "Sula," "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," "The Handmaid's Tale," "East of Eden," etc. I know they're all pretty basic, but a lot of that stuff is required reading for very, very good reasons (PS: "Secondhand Lions" kind of has a similar thesis to "The Things They Carried," where the point wasn't narrative truth but thematic truth instead. The part that always stuck with me from TTTC was the idea of "true war stories that never happened." That's the point of most fiction: just because something didn't literally happen doesn't make it untrue.)
