Beverly Sills is a true artist - she acts with both voice and body. I can’t honestly agree that Ettore is good, though. He is vocally and physically bland. Such a pity he never learned how to believably deliver with his voice and body, like Beverly did.

As a pianist, I accompanied singers in the studio of a highly respected voice teacher during Sill’s era who referred to her as an “amplified tin whistle.” I’ve never forgotten that phrase because I think it fits her thin, wiry voice perfectly.

At her absolute best! Just wonderful!

My parents went to a stage performance one time in which my dad got a big surprise. He recognized Ms. Beverly Sills sitting next to him. Front row. They talked briefly. She had some students of hers in the stage show. My dad was thrilled. And polite. 😅

Here we have the 'Diamond Encrusted Platinum Age of Singing' (which sadly has descended to the 'Cracked and Chipped Pottery Age'). Beverly Sills certainly gets my vote as she set one of the highest benchmarks for this aria with unequalled breath control.

All three ladies demonstrate their amazing beath control taking that G for 8 measures. For the Sills sample, it's from her 1971 studio recording. Aldo Ceccato, the conductor, took the tempo very slow! Sills still pulls it off with ease, and for good measure, she then takes a High B flat and holds in nearly as long! It also wasn't something Sills did for the studio recording. She pulled that off in all her live performances. We'll never have the luxury of having three great singers in the same decades ever again.

Sills was the greatest singing actress I have ever seen. Caballe had the most beautiful voice, and Sutherland was the rock of Gibraltar--her voice always dependable if her acting and diction left much to be desired. No singers on the opera stage today can compare to these giants.

When my late husband Neil and I joined forces in 1971 he was head over heels in love with our Beverly. (I became an ardent fan about 4 months later) This particular aria never failed to have him in raptures about Beverly's ability to stun any listener with her accuracy, speed and spellbindingly clean magical coloratura. Thank you Eli, I have always thought this was one of Beverly's masterpieces and always will. Brava our beloved Beverly and thank you Eli!

Ricordiamo, per quest'aria, anche le bravissime Mady Mesplé e Natalie Dessay, superbe Zerbinetta, a cui la grandissima Beverly Sills non ha niente da invidiare.

By sheer coincidence, I saw Sills on a tv show in the early-70s. I bought tix to see The Three Queens, quite a start for a complete newbie to opera. I adore her still, although I acknowledge that her forays into heavy dramatic roles shortened her career - a lot. FWIW, tapes and videos don’t do her any justice; like many singers, her voice needed the space of a big auditorium to expand and unfurl. She sounded much bigger and warmer in the theater.

She called me her friend. I was blessed!
