My understanding is the battle short switch bypasses the safety shut off mechanisms. Like the low oil shut off. If it's on, the machine will run until it self destructs. In a battle, you don't want it shutting itself down due to low oil or it running hot. You need 30 more mins of power more than you need the machine to protect itself. I am not positive on that but you may want to look into it. You don't want to bypass the mechanisms that shut the machine down before it gets damaged.
You are correct on that. That is what the Battle Short switch is intended to do. Currently a generator mechanic in the Army.
