Brendan, Maddie and I headed to West Virginia for two days in the New River Gorge National Park. Day 1 was kayaking the upper New River and Day 2 was whitewater rafting the lower New River. Our overnight stay included dinner and breakfast cooked by our fantastic guide John Henry and our guide Steve kept us safe down the river. We were very happy with the whole experience and would definitely re...
The Hardest Mohican MTB100 Race - 2021
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.3 года назад
The Mohican MTB100 is a mountain bike race in Loudonville, OH. You can race 100 miles or 100k and either way it will probably be your toughest day on a bike. The 100 milers started at 7am and the 100k started at 9am. My wave (100k age group 40-49) left at 9:32am and I finished at 8:52pm for a grand total of 11 hours 20 minutes. Some of the guys that have ridden it before said it took almost 2 h...
Dirty 30 - 50 Mile Gravel Race
Просмотров 5943 года назад
The Dirty 30 in Saranac, MI. Part of the Michigan Gravel Race Series and the first race of the 2021 season. Covid rules were in effect so no mass start, no podium awards, mask up for the first mile. 16, 30, and 50 mile courses. We did the 50. Event was top notch and everything ran super smooth with aid stations and volunteers all over the course. Well done Saranac! We will be back.
Iceman No Cometh 2020 - the year the race was canceled

The Iceman Cometh is a 30 mile point-to-point mountain bike race from Kalkaska to Traverse City. In 2020 it was canceled along with everything else due to the covid pandemic. My buddies and I decided to ride the out-and-back on race day. Starting at Timber Ridge Resort in Traverse City, riding 17 miles to the start line at Kalkaska Airport, then racing the 30 mile Iceman course back to Timber R...
2020 Big M State Championship MTB Race

Kirk and I decided the night before this race to drive up and and join our friend Chris for the Big M Championship MTB Race. Chris took first in his division and Kirk and I took second and third in our division. I think this was only my second live race of 2020 since most were canceled due to covid. Afterwards we laughed about how we almost didn’t do the race because we were concerned about rai...

Mountain Biking the Manistee National Forest - 2020
Просмотров 3904 года назад
My brother Mike had this crazy plan to mountain bike on the North Country Trail across the entire Manistee National Forest. He wanted to do something epic. We made a plan, created a route, and pedaled our bikes for 2 whole days. We saw beautiful forests, lakes, wildlife, hikers, bikers, and ate terrible burritos. Fortunately Mike brought enough Peanut M&M’s for both of us:) Please hit the thumb...

2020 Mohican MTB100 Race - Covid shortened
Просмотров 8374 года назад
While most of Michigan is still in coronavirus lockdown I drove to Ohio to participate in the Mohican Mountain Bike 100 Race. Racers can choose the 100 mile or 100k route but this year due to permit issues because of the partial lockdown (and maybe recent rainfall?) they had to shorten the courses to 66 miles and 29 miles. So I left the house planning to do 100k/62 miles, got an email saying it...

A quick video to test the new GoPro Chesty mount. This ride combines the Cannonsburg Ski Area mountain bike trail with the State Game Area trail. It was 88° and the GoPro quit working twice, I assume due to overheating. Here is a link to my ride on Strava: strava.app.link/j0Qy5DH9Q6 If you liked this video please hit the “thumbs up” and subscribe buttons.

This is an awesome event created by Matt Acker and his gang (thanks Matt!). Since all races have been canceled due to the Covid-19 quarantine this has been a great way to still get outside and compete. Riders race individually and times are recorded using Strava. This is the 2nd stage of a 3 stage event. More info can be found on the GRITT Series Facebook page. See this ride on Strava - strava....
Do you mind sharing how many hours / week you trained going into this race? Im training for this now and trying to gauge what I’m in for. This will be my first race. Thanks for the video! Full of great insight. Trying to absorb all I can.
Good job. I finished my first Mohican 100k this spring. Awful conditions. Rained the morning and was just absolute mud. My next challenge is the Marji Gesick 50 in two weeks in Marquette, MI.
Good luck on the Marji! You’ll love it. I finished the Marji 100 in 2021 and will be back.
I truly admire your dedication & discipline, gentlemen! I also agree with Andrea MacDonald!
Bad A’s so cool
Those climbs out there do not show up well on camera at all :)
Great video man! I did the 100 mi that year and it was a tough race for sure
Thanks and congrats to you also. I did the Marji Gesick 100 after this race and think the Mohican is actually harder until you get to the last 30 miles of Marji.
What's your average speed on this race?
15.3mph according to Strava. I’m a middle of the pack rider at best though.
@@hitthetrail817 that's not bad.
Well done and you stuck with it. I DNFed the 100 mile at 63 miles, crazy tough and hot
Will you try again?
How does this compare to Marji Gesick?
This video was from the race that was shorter due to covid. I have another video up from 2021 that is better. I did the 100k, not the 100 mile, and it took 11 hours. It was 90° and the highest Mohican DNF rate ever so it was a tough year. Mohican has just as much elevation and is very tough, but it doesn’t have the constant up and down and up and down through rocks and tree roots as Marji. Mohican has one rock garden…Marji is almost half rocks. Both are tough, but the last 30 miles of the 100 mile Marji are the toughest 30 miles you’ll ever ride.
Great job! You should be proud!
Wow! Awsome job man, way to hang in there. Im 50 n first full summer riding mtb. (Diamondback Hook) #Hardtail4Life LOL. I raced 2 OMBC races 1 at Mohican Wilderness and the 2nd at Camp Mohaven. Both only 8 miles though. So somewhat knowing the terrain n how "Brutally Beautiful" it is down there i couldnt imagine going the distance you did. And in that heat!!! Superhuman would be a better word to describe all of you that finished. And as a side note to this book im writing you (ha) id forgotten that my girl and i went down to camp for 3 days at Mohican Adventures the day after the race. And it was still hotter than a hooker on nickle day!! Sorry for that reference. But yeah,im one of those guys that believes you run into certain ppl or read certain things for a reason and not by circumstance. So having entertained the mere thought of one day attempting the Mohican 100 many times,it was in coming across your video at 4:30 am (lol) that definitly inspired me and made me know that next year come rain or shine ill be suited up,and sitting at the start of The Mohican 100. And wether i finish or not, itll be way cool in knowing that i had the balls to simply attempt it!!! Thanks for posting your ride and accomplishment. And continue to do so. Because ya never know who can come across it sometime and not only enjoy it but gain insight as well as motivation!!! Right On Brother and have a good rest of your week. #Dowhatyoulove #Ohiomtb #WoodsRider4Life
Hey Doug I appreciate the kind words! The beauty of signing up for a race like this is the mental and physical benefits that you’ll realize in the year leading up to the race. Once you get to the race, if you’ve done the preparation, you kinda already won whether you finish or not. Like you said just lining up at the start takes balls and a discipline that most people will never reach. Good luck in your training and thanks for watching. I have a bigger event coming in Sept….stay tuned.
Nice work dude! That was definitely one of the tougher races I've done. Way to stick it out and get it done!
Thank you and nice job to you as well!
Nice job! This was my fifth Mohican...by FAR the hardest of them. Hope you make it back out next year. Cheers!
You are braver than me! Not sure if I’ll be back because I have other races to attempt but we’ll see. Congrats on your 5th!
It was brutal I tapped out at aid station 3
I think you passed me when I was at aid station 3
I was on the black and white trek supercaliber with the fox factory 34 fork
@@michaelcawley7400 I think that was the one in the video where the ambulance was?
Love the video! A friend and I raced the 100k as well but we both DNF’d. I only made it about 1 1/2 miles after aid 3.5 in Mohave and was hoping to see the rest of it in your video! Guess I’ll have to wait til next year! Great job!!!
Also, writing this in my hubby’s account! Lol He broke his hand Tuesday before the race and missed out on all the fun! Lol
Thank you! I take way too much video at the beginning and am super bummed I didn’t get footage of some of the cool stuff at the end like the hanging bridge, etc. Good luck next year!
Nice video! Way to stick with it. I almost quit a few times. Very tough day!
Thanks for watching!
Nice video and narration!
Let’s ride!
Thanks for the great video and nice job in the race!
Thanks for watching!
That first fast downhill looked a little loose.
That loose gravel made me nervous having just switched from 50c to 40c tires.
Great vid thx! Just registered for my first Iceman... you’re my second training ride video. 😃 Do you guys use clips or cages?
Iceman is the best race of the year. It’s a celebration and ending to a great year of riding. You’ll love it. To answer your question....no one uses cages anymore, those are unsafe because you can’t get your feet out in the event of a crash. Most of the more serious riders/racers these days are running clipless pedals (which is a super confusing way to say that their shoes are clipped into the pedals, but the technical wording is clipless). I use upgraded flat pedals called Raceface Chesters and flat pedal shoes called Five Ten Freerider Pro. The pedals have pins and the shoes have a hard sole so you stick like glue. Someday I’ll try clipless but I haven’t yet because I feel comfortable with my flats. It’s all personal preference. Good luck!
I am curious how you trained for this and what bike were you riding for it? Thank you.
I ride a Trek Stache 29+ hardtail (3” tires). My training last year basically just involved spending as much time in the saddle as possible. Do long rides, get used to being on the bike for 4-5 hours at a time. This year I’m following Dylan Johnson’s advice for training....more weights, better nutrition, more recovery, and even more long rides. Check him out on RUclips. Thanks for watching!
@@hitthetrail817 Thank you. I thought it was a plus size bike. I have the Full Stache 8 and might give it a go this year. Thanks again.
Great video! I'm the guy at 15:52 in front of you at the PBR cooler. Cheers!
Thanks! The day was too perfect to rush through it and pass the chance to down a beer. Might go down as the best Iceman ever.
@@hitthetrail817 I couldn't agree more!
This video still has the best crash.
Yeah I don't speed through rivers at full speed as much anymore haha
Epic video! That race was a blast!
Thanks! Looking forward to a more normal race season in 2021....maybe? We can only hope.
Nice! 👌🔥🔥
