Typewriter Escapements, an Overview
Examining the workings of typewriter escapements and the things that interact with them. Featuring an Olivetti Lettera 22, a Smith-Corona Silent-Super, and a Smith-Corona Clipper.
Note:
Pardon the audio quality on this. Some of this was recorded at different times and I also learned that my camera does an "audio zoom" along with the video zoom which messes everything up. I worked for five hours to try to get it all sounding fairly similar before I finally gave up...

Very timely post! I was gifted this in the Sear Branded model - Tower Electric Professional 12 - from an estate sale by a family member. Seems like a solid machine. My first electric; my other machine is a SC Skyriter. It's a "Professional 12" model. Other than needing a cleanup - it seems to be in good working order.

Sitting here waiting for my first Lettera 32 to arrive and typing away on my 31/Dora which has the same internals. So it looks like they moved the shift adjustment to the segment on the 32? That's about the most significant difference between the 22 and the 32 I've seen! I know you did this on a 32 as well, which shift adjustment mechanism do you prefer? Seems like the 1950s excentric set screw would be more fiddly, but you had to get at the one on the 32 from the underside, didn't you? Invaluable stuff, thanks. :)

Great video! Do you have a source for replacement belts, other than round o-rings?

Unfortunately, no. However, it's just a basic V belt. The only challenge is its small size. I have to imagine that someone out there makes something suitable and we just haven't discovered it yet.

Looks like a solid repair, should last.

Thank you! This helped me. I actially used a mutter driver instead of a wrench to unlock the bottom because it was actually a hole in the metal thing in front of it, probably by design so it would be reachable.
