All very well said. I have plenty of mics and recorders, but it is my Rode Wireless Pro kit that I grab when I have limited space in my bag or whenever I do not know in advance what I will need. So much versatile and I have zero problem with the sound quality either. Sometimes I even use it with shotgun mics so that I can avoid a cable jumble. It can work as mono or stereo mics, can even record three people in interviews, it is a pair of 32bit floating point recorders, wireless/radio kit, clipon mics, USB audio interface... it can be connected to virtually anyting, or can be used stand alone, even without the receiver turned on... Yes, I would probably not use them in a Hollywood movie, but come on, I never shoot Hollywood movies.

I bought one as soon as it came out and still use it to this day. Used it for street interviews, for short films, for live performances and jam sessions, field recordings, ambient recordings, and table-reads. Unbelievable microphone for $200 (at least when I bought it).

So, don't quote me on this, but I would say yes... sort of. Omnidirectional mics pick up audio from all directions and (usually) only in a mono signal. This mic combines 2 polar patterns (XY and MS) into a stereo signal. Hopefully, that makes sense. 😅

What's old is new again. I remember the 4:3 days before HDTV came out and everyone was happy to go 16:9. I can understand filming in 4:3 but in open gate so you can crop to a 16:9 and if you want to move the footage up or down in post you can. 4:3 is good for printing as its closer to most print ratios. Micro Four Thirds and Fuji Medium Format and Hasselblad are 4:3 for photography. Panasonic GH5, GH6, and GH7 film in open gate 4:3 and you can crop to 16:9.

Here are my thoughts on the subject. 4:3 isn't nostalgia, its just trendy. Some platforms are set up to provide a better experience for a square type ratio. If you post a wide aspect ratio video, it displays poorly on these platforms. Also, notice how most people shoot video with their phones, vertically. This often gives poor results, aka bad framing, and is done because the phone is easier to hold vertically. As far as MFT is concerned, only as few newer cameras support this. Most dslr footage you see was cropped to this aspect ratio in post. It was also introduced to content makers that post in a square type ratio. The aspect ratio that is chosen MUST serve the story, just like camera angles and focal lengths. The 4:3 ratio is restrictive. One example is that if you look at older tv shows, people had to stand unnaturally and awkwardly close to get a two-shot (Star Trek TNG). It also constricted wide angle shots. We see it rarely used in modern movies, and only done very strategically. Open gate ratios are popular now to serve the social media creators and the restrictions of their platforms. 4:3 does work well for talking head videos. Instead of ratios I would recommend looking closer at the why and how to choose focal lengths for you projects. That will tell you what ratio the project should be before you film. I recommend the book "Cinematography Theory and Practice" by Blain Brown.

I bought the first three on kickstarter 24, 35, 55 last year and got them for a really good price. They are well built, but a little loose in their focus adjustment. I have also bought the two most recent 16 and 75 and to my taste they are almost an update from the first ones. It tells me that there is a strong development going on at Sirui and I will definitely follow them. They are largely identical in shape, so easy to change if you use them on a gimbal in relation to the balancing. I intend to use them together with DJI's new focus system. If you are into something more cinematic, I can also recommend their Full-Frame Anamorphic lens, I have their 50mm and 75mm, I want 35mm and their 150mm. But they are some big lenses - If you are new to this area, there are also their carbon fiber versions.

    • @ThatOneVirgil

Yeah, the anamorphic would be awesome to get! Only for the sake of getting the output of my full sensor. I export "cinematic" stuff in a 2.35:1 aspect anyways. I lose a little image, but 4k is very forgiving on crops 😅

if for some reason your cam screen doesnt have contrast focus indicators, you can buy a cheap laser ranger. I bought a 16mm film camera (like actual film) and you cant really see focus in the eyepiece, plus the laser is also in meters (Ukraine made camera) and the laser can read meters or feet. Also I heard this sense has a slight hue to it? just bought a Russian Jupiter 11 lens for my BMPCC 6k and it looks amazing. very old.
