Teaching knitting to absolute beginners for 15 years.
I have set up this channel to share my love of knitting and to help those who want to give it try, from the very basic upwards.
Follow me for a few short knitting tutorials with tips, tricks and basic stitches suitable for the absolute beginner knitter:
- how to knit
- free simple knitting patterns and projects
- how to fix mistakes in knitting
- how to finish your knitting neatly
- tips and tricks to elevate your handmade, hand crafted knitted piece
For a living, I make soap and do illustrations from my home on the East Coast of Scotland in a small seaside town called North Berwick. I am married to a lobster fisherman and may occasionally share videos of my slow-living lifestyle (and cat).
Thanks for looking, Sara

How to fix a Dropped Stitch in Garter Stitch (just Knit Stitch) Tutorial, ideal for Beginners
Mistakes and accidents in knitting happen to everyone and the good thing with knitting is that they can usually be fixed with no noticeable damage done.
This tutorial shows you how to catch a dropped stitch and stop it unravelling any further and how to work it back up to your knitting needle using a crochet hook.
A dropped stitch is knitting stitch which at some point has come off your knitting needle and it quite often works loose in the rows below too.
Garter stitch is the stitch pattern made when you knit a piece purely using the knit stitch.
If you spot a mistake in your knitting, not a dropped stich but perhaps the wrong stitch, you can fix this by working your way back to it. See How t...

Learn how to Knit the Garter Stitch Knitting Tutorial (ideal for beginners learning to knit)
Просмотров 93Год назад
Garter stitch is the pattern which is created when you knit every single stitch. You end up with a reversible pattern, looking the same on both the front and the back of your piece and which lies flat easily. When you knit garter stitch, you have to remember to keep your working yarn to the back, unlike sticking or stockinette stitch where you are alternating between one row of knitting followe...
How to give your knitting a nice finish by weaving in the loose ends of yarn neatly & securely
Просмотров 96Год назад
A nice neat finish to your knitting can make all the difference, elevating it from looking homemade to looking professional. This method of weaving in all your loose tails of yarn doesn’t involve tying a knot, it allows the finished knitted piece to remain stretchy and bouncy, but keeps the ends from unravelling. All you need is a tapestry needle (sometimes referred to as a bodkin) as it is blu...
Learn to Sew Up Garter Stitch Knitting using Mattress Stitch (ideal for beginners, looks invisible)
Просмотров 103Год назад
This tutorial shows you how to easily sew up your garter stitch (every row is knitted) knitting, giving it a beautiful, invisible and flat finish. I always hate sewing up knitting at the end of a project, I don’t enjoy sewing and find myself putting it off as long as possible. But, I do know that a good, neat finish makes all the difference and it can really lift your piece from looking home-ma...

Beautiful explanation, thank you!
Glad it was helpful! 🥰
Thank you! Appreciate the tutorial and written instructions. 🎃
You are so welcome! 🎃🥰
@castawayknitting Again! Thank you. I made a couple pumpkins. I also made larger one, sage green, off white. Beautiful.
@ oh brilliant! I think they look great in loads of different colours all bunched up 🥰
Hi! What is the yarn thickness you are using?
I just use whatever I have lying around as long as it matches the size of the needles. This was 5.5mm 👍🏽🎃
Oh yes
I’m guessing you could knit this in the round and avoid having to seam. Super cute pumpkin and the perfect yarn !
Yes, you can! Thank you 🥰🎃
Love this, but so fast 🤦🏼♀️
I celebrate my bday there last month. Can’t wait to go back q
Can you tell us what "gauge" of wooden knitting needles you are using, so we can order them? (See, I, a beginner, don't even know that!)
(And the type/thickness of wool?)
So sorry, I have only just seen this comment. Just make sure that the size of wool matches the size of the needles. Step 1 in this series talks briefly about this - have a look at the belly band of the wool and go for something like 6mm with 6mm needles to match. The thicker the wool, the faster it knits and the chunkier the finished product 👍🏽
@castawayknitting OK. Thanks! 🙂👍
Wow thanks for this tutorial!
This is so funny and yesterday I actually thought I should knit my cat Maxie a coat as well! But I think she'll rip it apart so will forget about it😻😻
So cute!
Can you do one for weaving in on ribbing? This video is really great! Thx
I CANT DO IT IM SO ANNOYED IDK WHAT IM DOING WRONG UGGGG 😭😭😭😭😭
Years of knitting and I can not decide how tight the knit should be. This was a cool little video :)
Thanks so much 🥰 I hate knitting tension squares, but after many years I have realised it is worth it 😖! Amazing what a difference needle size makes 🥰🥰
Thanks for sharing 🙏🏽
You are so welcome
Thanks for sharing 🧣
My pleasure 😊
Until you accidentally give it a hot wash and it ends up looking hard as a leather and could be used as a cod piece for Ken.
😖oh dear, this sounds like a bad experience! Though I think it’s happened to most of us 😢🫶🏽
How do you add the green touch to the body of the pumpkin 🎃?❤️🙏
It’s just a wee line of green wool in a running stitch up the side, this is a quick view of it, hope it makes sense 🙏🏽 thanks for asking 🥰 ruclips.net/user/shortsN8Tkvv00GYA?feature=share

Never used two needle method before, shall try this
I like this method as you don’t need to worry about how much tail you need when you cast on, so it’s great for when you have to cast on a lot of stitches. It is also great for beginners as it is quite straightforward for keeping the stitches even. I hope you get in well with itx thanks for watching 🥰
So can you knit with big needles and thin wool? Or is this a never do this thing?
You can and it can create a very loose knit which could work as a shawl. Or if you are a new knitter and your knitting is very tense and tight, bigger needles help 👍🏽🧶
🧶🧶🧶
🧶🥰
Love these ❤
Thanks so much 🥰🥰🥰
Thanks for sharing 🥰🧶

Wow 😮
Surprising isn’t it? I learned that the hard way (one huge glove 😂) 🥰
Thanks for sharing 🧶🥰
You’re welcome 😊
Such a small difference in needle size - can’t believe it makes such a visible difference in the knitting 😮
Crazy isn’t it? I learned the hard way by accidentally making HUGE gloves to begin with 😂🙏🏽
Love this 🍃🍂
So glad! 🥰

Such an easy to follow pattern 🎃
So would I use this to make my knitting row shorter?
That’s right, there is a full tutorial on my page, but this is great for decreasing the number of stitches you have, for example if you want to make a hat taper in at the top 👍🏽 thanks for looking 🥰
Not knitting related - but I love this music 🎶
Me too!! Just makes me smile 😊
