Project Nestbox and Nest box solutions
Великобритания
Добавлен 16 окт 2013
Project nestbox was set up back in 2009. The aims and objectives are to target declining species of birds and mammals in South East Wales and construct suitable nest boxes for each species. I make nest boxes for all hole nesting species of bird along with Hedgehog, Bat and dormice. I am based in Pontypool, Gwent but cover parts of South Powys. I also monitor my nest boxes and ring the Pied Flycatchers, Redstarts, Spotted Flycatchers, Barn Owl and Little Owl.

2 things I noticed. The first sanding disc you used didn't have suction holes in it to collect the dust and second, you didn't install the dust bag so a lot of the dust is now collecting in the filters.
The prices some of these garden centers charge for boxes that are useless is criminal - I've seen bird boxes where the box it's self is very simple looks great and would probably be fit for purpose until you look at the roof which is clad in a highly polished metal (Polished enough to see my face in really well) which is aimed to compliment the bright colour of the box but will more than likely put the birds off using the box. And this box could of been yours for £17.50 or two for £30 needless to say I didn't spend any money and there still on the shelf.
Some supermarket nest boxes can be really bad. I've seen them made out of metal. There ought to be laws against such poor boxes.
Totally agree 👍🏻
There must be natural nest sites too, cavities and such. Do you check for them, and record what you find? I used to be great at that as a kid - think like a bird! I didn't like to interfere with the nests though - quick look, if that, and leave well alone.
No I just concentrate on the 1000 tit boxes. I have over 100 Barn owl nest boxes to monitor also.
Hi, which nestbox would you like plans for
Do you have any plans available for the nest boxes?. Thanks for uploading the video.

@@projectnestbox One suitable for bluetits please.

What size staples are you using to attach the felt? Appears to be a great tool.
Awesome review sir. I think you can connect the vac to the sander with the tool connect and it will come on automatically when you switch the sander on.
Thanks for the info
Thank you for that information 👍🏻👍🏻

Boxes are great yet if there's no habitat to produce food then there's trouble.
It is a big worry at the moment.😮
Another nice build - I love it 👍
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you, Andy
Thanks for taking the time and effort to upload this vid. Much appreciated.
My pleasure!
Very impressive Richard, where's the kettle? 😂
😂😂😂😂
Love this build - we have a bat that visits our garden early evening so I've always thought about putting a box up but part of me thinks it would be pointless as we have a large area of very well established very old tall trees that are less than a minutes travel by wing away . The Leyland Chocolate masonry paint looks great too. I know what you mean about the weather in the higher parts of Wales I visited Devil Bridge whilst stay in Aberystwyth and as it was a hot day decided to wear my shorts to keep cool however whilst traveling up to the bridge in the mini railway carriage which are covered with half open sides and we entered the clouds the shorts combined with the mist and wet suddenly didn't seem the best plan but still such a very beautiful place and the natural waterfall was absolutely stunning.
We are lucky to have such a beautiful Country
Have you e bee hotel? I've knocked up quite a few over the years. fascinating to watch them do their thing.
Yes, I enjoy making them. I have not got any in my garden, though. Maybe you could send me some photos of yours if you are not to busy.
@@projectnestbox Mine are pretty rough and ready - many merely blocks of wood with holes drilled in them. Some with bamboo canes. This year I have erected a few with cardboard tubes that I can take out, clean and store ... and nothing has used them! Poor weather and siting I reckon. The bees like them boxes that have been up for a while and in a place they know. I'm experimenting with suspensions of bee poo in water painted on the front so they sniff it out. I've a lot of leafcutters this year, no mason bees as it was very cold and wet when they were supposed to be about. I watch and listen to a lot of entomologists to get the siting right and tackle mites and other predators, so I increase the healthy population. Planting a lot more flowers too.
I put four of those up in a area where common pipistrelles were known to be. Never saw any evidence of a bat. Lots of spiders and moths, so something had some use of them.
Do you make your own fatballs? I do and the birds love 'em far more than the shop ones. I did buy a whole battel of shop stuff once and the rats found them. Ate the lot. I'd forgotten I'd put them in the shed.
😂😂😂😂😂
I love the spudgies.
Hi do you need a battery converter to use the dewalt battery on the naul gun if so what is the part number for it plz great video by the way keep up the good work
You can get the battery converter on ebay. Sorry it doesn't have a part number
What a waste of view..
You don't look a day over 55!
😂😂😂😂😂
2. Years is not very long i have brasher had over 12 years were in the spring. summer and autumn Berghaus in the winter they are also about 12 years old in the Cotswolds
You are correct and maybe I should invest in a more expensive brand of boot. I do have Salewa for when I'm hillwalking.
Thank you for the great review. I purchased these yesterday and looking forward for my first trek in them today. Like you said great looking boot really comfortable on the foot as well. Also like the look of your Salewa boots how long have you had them and any issues with them 👍🏻
@kwacker4km Hi, thank you for your kind words. My Salewa boots are used on Rocky mountains around the Brecon Beacons. Perfect for scrambling with such a tough vibram sole and reinforced suede. Not as comfortable as my Karrimor cheetahs, but much stronger.
Out of curiosity, do you wear your boots every day.
Yes i will be wearing these every day I’ve had numerous pairs of other boots which I’ve had for under a month and have failed me so hoping these hold out like yours have two years would be great and it seems like you give them a good thorough testing as well so I’m well chuffed with my purchase fingers crossed they hold out like yours also just bought some dubbing to keep them waterproof and supple. Thank you forgetting back to me you have a great day and happy trekking 👌👍
"Stop making videos and throw this ball!" Is there drainage?
Yes
Well done connor! Xx
They appear calm, can you feel if their heartbeat's are racing?
You can feel the heartbeat, and in my opinion, it feels calm, but I'm not sure if they are at stress level. They always feel calm and easy to ring.
@@projectnestbox I go like that in the dentist's chair. When I handle my chickens though, they do not appear to like it one bit. Keep up the good work.
😂😂😂
Thanks for sharing you ringing the young barn owl , keep up the great work!
Thank you
Not a good year.
It's been a complete disaster
Good lad - there's the future right there
Lovely to see the pied flys doing good around your end though! Been trying to encourage them at my neck for a few yeras but to no avail. Keep up the great work!
Where are you based
@projectnestbox I'm north staffs, not too far outside of Stoke
<3<3<3
Soo pretty <3
great video, keep up the amazing work, I love wild birds so I always try and help them in anyway I can :)
Thank you
The metal plates are widely available on Etsy and Ebay, made in the UK, I will add if they can get into wood, they can get through the soft sign plastic. Only acrylic of a reasonable thickness will stand up to it.
Thank you
You're welcome
A guy gave me dozens of metal plates with holes of 25, 28 and 32mm I found that far easier for me than your method! Have you ever had a robin nest in a kettle? I've had a wren in a boot. I have a robin in my shed at the moment which means I don't have access to it.
I've seen a Robin nest in a coat pocket in a shed
@@projectnestbox Ha! I had a wren in a coat's hood in the same shed the robin is in now. Closest I got to a wren, you notice their lovely colours. I'd open the door to the shed and the female would perch ready to fly if I went inside, so I didn't go inside for weeks. I thought I'd bird-proofed my shed ,yet they're back. I put up so many other potential nest sites for them too.
1 inch weld mesh around the sides and front works a treat
Great idea
Nice work - I just noticed this morning that I posted a comment with a link to a charity pot to support community charities etc. through B&Q the comments gone so I'm wondering if it was taken down by RUclips anyway hope it helps as I know 18mm ply is not cheap I've just spent an hour sourcing some and feel like I need a cup of tea - it's ones of those jobs today 😮💨
The problem is Andy, I'm not a registered charity and that is always the stumbling block when sourcing funding. 😮
quote from my missus " such a happy baby" said in her best gushing voice 🥰
You would have done the same Nikolas. Did you have any returned Pied Fly after.
Thank you for doing that <3
Shame you can't persuade the grey squirrels to stop their shennanigans.
It's not for trying 😂😂
What make of Makita is the chop saw?
Hi, it's the 12 inch LS1219L
What do you need mate
19mm ply mate
Hello. Could you do a video on how you make the metal hole plates, please?
Yes sure, I will do it next week
Thank you. Hope you have a lovely Bank Holiday weekend.
And the same to you
AS much as I love the cheeky antics of Grey Squirrels that would be a travesty if they got to those eggs. I know others will say its just nature but still I'm glad your adding some prevention to help the birds out
When I started making nest boxes I believe we were advised to use 9mm ply, nowadays RSPB and BTO would suggest 18mm plywood, and maybe marine plywood at that. That's not cheap. I did a local event where I got free wood from EH Smith and we made quite a few boxes with the community. I've made some woodcrete boxes that have been succesful, had a nuthatch in one of them. Fun, if tricky, to make. No joy with batboxes and owl boxes just had squirrels.
Just keep plugging away 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 and we'll done for what you have done 👏👏👏
We want to see the dog take a walk, not you drinking tea 😂
Little doggie wants to go for a walk right now. You can warm up your tea and drink it later
Love your builds - as you know I make a few bird boxes in my job role and I'm just trying out the idea of adding an extra 2 or 3mm to the length of the sides and front plate to try and create a drip point to keep the rain flowing off the boxes as quickly as possible I've only made 1 of these so far as it was literally yesterday I came up with the idea and gave it a go. I thought it might be something you could use on your future boxes.
Can you share an image of your finished box
@@projectnestbox I can do when we make another the 1st ones gone today it essentially looks like a standard bird box but with the floor pushed up 2 or 3mm - I will get a pic to you at some point though
Thank you so much for the guide! I'll definitely try making some of those for next year. Never had a Redstart in my boxes but I know they are present in my area
Your welcome
You are very welcome
I got this impact driver as part of a package with the hammer drill dcd805 and both tools are beast, but the dcf850 is in a league of its own same power than other drivers double its size.
I absolutely love it, I'm looking forward to seeing the dcf 860
