So this is a repeat of the past map, only now it is fought defensively. You do not have the equipment to hold back the Soviets permanently, but you can delay them if you really try, and are skilled. ;)
I have been wanting to play someone these maps since I discovered this mod. I love these maps and scenarios. I am pretty sure McGuba did not plan these out for multiplayer level, but we will give them a go.
Dakota 88 from Pennsylvania will be my opponent. He and I started in Barbarossa as RMA Bowed out for some reason.

So many Soviet infantry waiting and coming out of every corner. From conscripts to terrifying SMG infantry. If you have deployed RayCaster in Stalingrad Docks, make sure to have his StuG III E in tank mode at the end (for potential upgrade to StuIG 33B - which needs a range hero).
I just looked again at the Stalingrad Docks scenario and wondered about the North Eastern airfield near the river that is already under german control and guarded by those german units. Since the scenario has 3 Ju 52 german transport planes available, it would be possible to deploy 3 paratrooper units over their from the start, but only if they have an air spawn. So the first the german Fallschirmjäger, second Kostia with the Bersaglieri can be in family upgraded to Paracadutisti for 45 prestige and then third Temis with 10.5cm leG 41 gets an air spawn if you remove the Kettenkrad for the moment. So that would cost about 85 prestige, but you would have 2 para inf and 1 para arty/AT ready over there in the first turn. At the very start, not many enemies are there. A single active SMG inf near the river at (35,5), the passive SMG inf at (29,6) where you can capture the BA-64 recon unit and those two active AA units near the northern most "Stalingrad Dock" harbor tile at (33,7). Destroying those two AA would give your aircraft a lot of room there, and infantry that attempts to land there would be very vulnerable. Together with the aux towed AT and AA guns from the airfields, you would also have a strong force in the rear of the Railway stations & tank factory. I have not attempted this, just thought about this. No idea how the enemy units respond, if it is feasible or benefitial. But it would be some novel approach! Instead of the Soviets getting reinforcements from there, they would get flanked!
Oh I love this idea and think it would go well, but I already started the recording before I saw this post. Just finished the recording this morning. First 5 days took forever, but it is going well. There will need to be some discussion about unit changes for se units after I send you the finish of Docks. As I am assuming you will want an update by then. But all in all things are proceeding well, and overall pleased with how I am managing the difficulty.

Hello goose_2, I made a mistake with the last update! I forgot to return the soviet naval transport values to those of the unmodded Panzer Corps (from their BE values). Thus at the moment they unfortunately are too fast (6 movement instead of 4), so they come too close to the shore and the enemy AA for Stalingrad Docks within one turn (and have too high defense). I'm trying to release an update tomorrow to fix this issue (2025-01), but it does require you to again transition from Storming Stalingrad to Stalingrad Docks again. My apologies.

I read the equipment file regarding the upgrade options for Goose. The first Panzer II Luchs version will be available for Ruins. It already has better defense than SdKfz 222++, but also has more ammo and tracked movement of 7! Improved Panzer II Luchs will be available in the first 1943 scenario, adding another 2 to its ground defense. Final Panzer II Luchs is available for Kursk, with a much better gun. And on top of that, all the recon Panzer II can switch between tank mode (1 higher rof) and recon mode (1 higher ground defense), depending on the situation (both modes have reconmove). So upgrading Goose to Panzer II would be great, if you really want to keep him as a fighting recon. Especially for muddy terrain, due to probably highest fully tracked movement in the game. DanielS could try out the SdKfz 233 for Docks to help with suppression of enemies, practically without conversion costs between it and the SdKfz 232+.
Well played, expertly dismantled Sevastopol defenses! Your microphone volume setting seems to be a bit low. Was a bit hard to hear your comments.
With the captured SU-122, the final core unit joins (except for the coming bonus SE units). Although it has more realistic (much lower) rate of fire than in unmodded Panzer Corps, it also has more realistic (much higher) armor, initiative and hard attack values (HA only when in direct fire tank mode). A precursor for the soviet SU-152 and ISU-152.
Great hero additions, while the enemy is systematically rolled up. With Stalingrad practically on the horizon.

Including the UI changes requested by caesar67, as well as the AT/TD changes mentioned in chat (+1 initiative, -1 hard attack) and some more unit pictures. Good luck for Buzinovka Depot! Asking for another savegame from end of Buzinovka, when you have completed your core with the SU-122 (except for those coming bonus SE units). Also for Tigers upgrade discussion ;-) .

Great traps and ambushes. You systematically dismantled the Soviets, great job! 34:14 with the StuG III F defending a town against an infantry, just perfectly done using the camo ability. 🙂 Also request to adjust the sound levels, can unfortunately hardly hear your voice over the in-game sounds.

Provoking AI to give up its defensive positions is the winning move! Enemy 2 star experience is tough, since double FieldMarshal aspect of difficulty kicks in hard now (25% player experience). Great city battle, hard fought, precursor for epic struggles to come?

Oh, talking about Bisons and sIG artillery range: If you strongly prefer at least range 2 on all arties, even those that have some armor like StuG and such, then range 1 hero on Locarnus would be really, really useful. There will be an arty available for Stalingrad Docks, which is in the sIG upgrade family (together with Bison I, Bison II and the coming 15cm Lorraine). This StuIG 33B arty only has range 1, like the short barrel StuG III, and will also have armor like the StuG III. So a range 1 hero on Locarnus could nicely compensate that deficit and make that unit more useful for Stalingrad Docks and later scenarios. And since Gooseboy upgrades in GC 42.5 to Bison I and could then in GC 42.6 upgrade to "15cm Lorraine", there is not even a problem with "rule of 1". Locarnus Flakpanzer I in tank mode at the end of GC 42.5 could upgrade to Bison I in GC 42.6 and stay that way until the StuIG 33B becomes available.
Correction regarding what I wrote in chat about the 7.62cm FK(r) and Pak(r). Captured and modified "7.62cm FK(r) /UE(f)" will be available for bonus SE units at Voronezh, so potential alternative to Semovente 47/32 for Makorin. While truly converted "7.62cm Pak(r) /Sd11" will be available for normal units at Voronezh, so direct upgrade for captured french 7.5cm Pak for Gigiduru.
I like having some shorter scenarios before and after the intense Sevastopol fortresses and city fighting.

I did another test of the following Sevastopol scenario. It seems that rng in my first test masked another problem, the discrepancy between the experience level of your auxiliar units (due to difficulty setting) and the experience level of the Soviet units. Sevastopol is imho the first scenario where this issue has considerable effect (if not masked by rng), due to Soviets having 2 stars and the aux units being important for the battle. The issue will subside a bit roughly until after? Stalingrad, since the enemy experience will be below 2 stars again for that time. But it will get much worse the more experience the enemy units have, since the baseline for your aux units will be generally limited to 0 or 1 stars for the whole campaign (due to player 25% experience setting being applied to most aux units as well). I'm currently not sure how to deal with that potentially major difficulty settings/game design issue in the long run.

Attack 3 is the absolute king of heroes, rare and change the unit as a beast. I am thankful for every single one of them, but also glad my army is not dominated by them. Their rarity makes them stand out and nice in a clutch.

@@goose_2 You wrote in the description that you are trying Sevastopol at the moment. Do you by chance have a savegame from the deployment phase of Sevastopol? I would like to try my hand at that as well, with your already completed upgrades and and replacements and overstrength decisions already made.
Currently the Gebirgsjäger only has better movement than the Jäger in mountains and high mountains. In hills, forests and all other terrain, they have equal movement at the moment. I plan to do another movement balancing pass at some point and then finally make the movement table more accessible for reference by players.
A reference table explaining movement would sure be helpful.
Addon update 2024-11 is now available in the slitherine forum thread. Along with some thoughts on upgrades and unit choices for Sevastopol. 🙂
Kharkov with historical Marders instead of the too early long barrel StuG III F from unmodded Panzer Corps. Will the powerful Marder guns be worth the lack of armor against all those T-34 and KV-1? RNG will have a word on that!
The real test comes in the middle where they begin to break me, but I overwhelm their flanks
High time for some gun improvements for the germans. At least the first glass cannon Marders are available for Kharkov 1942.2 scenario! Today I also managed to write up the stats and upgrade choices from the savegame you sent me. Will then work on Sevastopol 1942.4 fixes for the next update.

I am not 100% sure what you are asking. The editor "Link" is a button that comes up on the pop up screen for opening the game. Click the button that says editor and it takes you into a place that allows you to pull up the scenarios and their codes/parameters. I hope this helps.
1) Richard Martin raised the issue of Strat Bomber numbers. You currently only have and plan for 2 dedicated ones plus the 1 tac/strat switchable one. Are you sure you want to only have 3 max Strat Bombers? 4 seems to be the go to number in that category for high difficulties? 2) Yep, I agree with Richard Martin that the Char B is very outdated in 1942. So in the Addon update after this discussion took place, I added the option to convert the captured Char B into a flamethrowing or a self propelled artillery version. Flamer conversion might help more for Stalingrad scenario. 🔥

@@goose_2 Nope, no new units except the SU-122 that you will capture in 1942. I'm thinking about making a cross class upgrade bridge between ground and air units, like I did with the Kübelwagen for only ground unit classes and the Hs 126 & Fw 189 for air units. Not cheap, but at least possible, like some US cavalry functions transitioned from horses to helicopters after WW2. So it was mainly a question if you think 3 strat bombers are enough in the long run. I would then try to find/make a way to get you a 4th strat as a unit upgrade from your existing core forces.

Oh, and if possible could you send me the savegame from end of Kharkov 42.2 after you complete it? I will have to do some adjustments for Sevastopol as well as mid 1942 upgrade options. I will then also update your core unit table in the forum thread (eg new heroes, upgrade options). Good luck for 42.2 and see you for the Vitebsk final.
by the by. I had time off yesterday. Columbus day! I was able to record the first 2 parts. And checking the start of the next part. I have broke the map. It was knock down drag out and brutal. Very exciting stuff, but overall great stuff. I should finish up, maybe tonight. I applied now that I am back from game night. I thought long barreled Pz4F-2 was not going to be available? And something seems off with Char B's upgrade path, 3 various tanks and no graphics for either upgrade and the arty Char B says it changes to a KV-5? The Char B Flamm is 10 more exp, but all stats are worse off? I think something got screwed up in the Char B category.
@@goose_2 Long barrel Pz IV F2 is available and there were even a few at historical Kharkov in May 1942. Just no long barrel StuG III F yet. Oof, Char B arty to KV-5 is bad, I will correct that asap! 😞 - Corrected, see hotfix update 2024-10a What do you mean about no graphics? Do you mean the unit icon or the black&white historical picture or both? Char B Flamm has 10 rof and military engineer (ignores enemy entrenchment) and fortkiller traits (+5 attack against bunkers). I can give it it 1 ammo and defense back, but otherwise it was just very specialized. A lot stronger than the Flammpanzer II against entrenched soft targets.

In seeing what you have written now, I will comment. 1) Char B arty phase, strongly encourage as it will give me a chance to build up the Char B's exp to the 3 star necessity before I need to upgrade him to a big dog tank that will be needed in 43. 2) Nice Zerg reference, that is a game I used to love playing. Starcraft, a classic so well done and the balance between the 3 types are unmatched in complexity and creativity. 3) I am sorry I missed all your comments and my hope is eventually you will be convinced of the need to allow the 2 bonus to hard attack for AT's. ;) See you on Friday. @@goose_2 Oh yeah, youtube has some short sighted priorities. Maybe they should think a little more about quality & reliability for users instead of scraping the last bit of ad revenue & damaging the usability in the process. 1) Unfortunately I could not find a PzC unit graphic for the Char B arty conversion. Though I will implement the Flamm conversion. It has some usage against entrenched infantry and bunkers, but of course will be even more useless against tanks in open terrain. Maybe it can help for scenarios like Sevastopol. 2) Yep, SC was great, especially the balancing. 3) Never! 🙂I consider the rebalancing of the ground unit experience boni to be a great achievement and lament my hesitation then and lack of time now to do the same for fighter units. 🙃 The camo ability of the 7.5cm Pak and the switching ability of the Marder and long barrel StuG units is just so powerful already. Soviets will have a bad time with those from mid 42 until they improve their tanks in return. Early 42 is just right before the Germans make that quality jump. See you Friday!

@@goose_2 Valid concern. I checked vanilla and BE 2.4, both of them have 1 less ini and 1 less soft attack compared to current 2024-09 values. So I'll either reduce ini or attack (not both) in the next update. Thus they will still be better than they are in BE or vanilla, but not as much. I'm leaning towards reducing ini by 1. This way they will just be more dependent on suppression of the enemy. Hm, I just praised the reliability of the old school slitherine forum compared to youtube in my last post on it, now I can't reach it...

@52:00 Kind of super duper late but if i remember correctly Axis units loose 2 fuel per turn because of the shortages. This is why you've lost those planes.
Never too late too comment as long as you do not blame me for taking a while in responding, BE has so much good because of the so much that is frustrating about playing it. The 2 loss ammo every turn being one of the key things.
I love that you take a defensive scenario and go all out and try something new, to faster gain heroes. Those gameplay changes and adaptations to this enormous difficulty makes this campaign so much more interesting. Combined with the usual PzC 1 rng (that T-34 had better evasion than a submarine)!

So far, so normal. Then the rng fun begins. 13:43 another strat bomber for some suppression 14:03 your 12 overstrength Pz III J2 does only 1 damage, so the T-34 is pushed again and down to 1 strength. 18:20 your Re.2000 fighter misses as well, so the T-34 survives turn 1 with 1 strength and 1 ammo. The AI reinforces it to 4 strength at the start of turn 2. 24:46 The overstrength Pz III J2 again has low rolls and destroys only 3 of the 4 strength points, again pushing the T-34 away with 1 strength remaining. 25:30 After another attack by an aux SdKfz 251/1, the T-34 retreats again. 25:36 Second attack run by the Re.2000 fighter, second miss. 25:50 You switch the 3 star Ju 88 A-4 to tac bomber mode in a successful last attempt to prevent the T-34 from surviving yet another turn.

Great achievement under those really hard conditions! All victory hexes taken AND both possible units captured (T-34 and KV-1). This starts out insanely hard and I lose units on this one. I like the fact that I am just getting ok with losing units. It makes playing a lot easier to just accept what happens.
I did some quick check regarding online available sources for german HEAT ammo. None of those sites I found appeared error free (in my opinion), so take their information with a grain of salt. There is an article with lots of tables from panzerworld, just google for "German Ammunition Loadouts". In this article eg the first line of the "Assault guns, January 1943" table seems suspicious. It lists for the 7,5 cm Stu K (L/24) that it had 270 HEAT and 30 smoke rounds allocated. Imho that is much more likely to be the number for HE and HEAT rounds combined. Same as in the previous table right above for April 1942, where only HE but no HEAT is listed. The later tables about actual ammunition consumption (rather than initial allocation) are imho much more interesting. The second to last table shows that HEAT for the 7.5cm KwK L/24 gun was not consumed in the mid 1941 to early 1942 time frame, but then became a standard ammo in 1942 and the most used ammo type for that gun in 1943.
Welcome back! Not sure the last chat message made it, so I'll write it here again. I would say that the Nebelwerfer would be much better off with a range hero! Especially considering the self propelled variants, where movement is already good. With range hero that first halftrack Wurfrahmen (range 1 base stat) would be much more useful, instead of waiting for the longer range ones in 43.

It was nasty, but ultimately great playthrough. You will enjoy the dog fight each and every broadcast, 4 in total. Do I need to wait for any monthly upgrades before starting Demyansk??? Are there any units you want to see showcased there? What do you think about using the Bison 2? It was never used on the continent, so... I look forward to showing the initial outing this Sunday. @@goose_2 Streets of Moscow is really tough, can't wait to see the struggle! No need to wait for an update for Demyansk. But I highly recommend keeping a savegame from the PENULTIMATE turn of Demyansk! In case you need to switch unit classes, not only for GC 42 East, but also GC 42-43 West, if I manage to establish compatibility with that at some point in the future. Imho the Bison 2 is a great upgrade for the Bison 1, especially one more ammo is so worth it. I would use it in Europe without hesitation, rule of 1 and Napoleon difficulty is hard enough. And it is in no way overpowered, since it still has that low rate of fire. The Hs 129 would be my wish, but only if Arato Bela already has a hero after Streets of Moscow. So that you can make an informed decision which Bf 110 can be converted to Hs 129? See you Sunday!

Hey Buddy, I am commenting here based on one of the questions you asked in the broadcast. You asked for ewunits desired for 42 East. My wish list/request list are as follows: 1) Love the 42 upgrades where the Whermacht get their heat ammo where they get a +1 att in their HA, but why no love for the Italians? Don't you think they would share that lovely ammo with their allies? So can they get slight upgrades for 10 prestige as well? 2) When/where does the StuG3F come out? I thought it was right away in 42, if not when? 3) Marder 2 when/where and will that be an in house upgrade for the 38t? 4) When where will be the next Bf-109 upgrades? This is a separate question that I did not have time for. I want to upgrade the FW-190a2 to the 3 and continue to work on him until he gets his first hero, but you were wanting me to upgrade the green FW to that one instead. Please give me your reasoning. @@goose_2 1) Sorry, misunderstanding on my part. The HEAT ammo was mostly for the short barreled german 7.5cm guns (so Pz IV, StuG, various arty that can switch to direct fire mode). The normal infantry benefited from that as well, since they had pretty organic and low level "7.5cm leichtes Infanteriegeschütz 18" guns with them, which also got some HEAT ammo. But the +1 hard attack increase for german infantry was mostly based on adapting lots of new tactics against T-34 and KV tanks. There is a youtube video on that topic when you search for "German Infantry Anti-Tank Tactics 1941/1942". As far as I know, the Italians and others had more trouble adapting to the Soviet tanks? I'll try read up on this a bit more before publishing the next update. 2) and 3) StuG III F (Pz III upgrade family), Marder II (Pz II family) and Marder III (Pz 38(t) family) are available from May 1942 onwards, so second scenario of GC 42 East. 4) Bf 109 G-2 will be available in mid June 42, so for Sevastopol in the GC 42 East. But that is more of a sidegrade compared to the F-4. The F-4 has 2 more initiative, while the G-2 has 1 higher defense. Many experienced pilots prefered the F-4. 5) After the Fw 190 A-3 from mid March 42, the next version is the A-4 in August 42 (when half of the GC 42 East scenarios are already completed). So the training of your inexperienced Fw 190 would have to further wait until that time, or start with the older A-2. Thus it would imho be better to leave your experienced Fw 190 as an A-2 and finally start training the other Fw 190 unit with the A-3 right away. Before improved soviet fighter models enter the stage (eg Yak-7B roughly in June 1942 and La-5 in August 1942). Thank you for the great discussions, see you next time!
