Thank u 4 doing these. So great 2 hear JB shows this way.
I miss these radio and tv days.
These r great
Thank you very much. They are a labor of love.
Rice's 1937 novel Imperial City is a masterpiece. It needs to be republished and at long last given its just accolades.
I agree, he is a unique voice and a lot of fun to read. And he makes you think.
@@mikegillettcomedy737 Thanks. Imperial City is a true tour de force. The character delineations, the humor, the playful and masterful use of language, the occasional pathos and uncanny insights are a joy to read. Several of the chapters could be published separately as poignant short stories.
Edgar Bergen had the strangest but one of the best acts on radio. Who would think of putting a ventriloquist on radio? It defies logic, but it worked.
You are so right. I think it works because the writing is great and Charlie is a memorable character. I've heard other radio comics playing two voices in a scene with each other and it never really works. With Edgar Bergen it is easy to forget it is one guy doing it all.
Who’s on third?
Okay so this makes zero sense, who is on first?
I told him. I said "Call the little woman."
2:43 😂
First! WC best comic ever
wow! one i've never heard.
Great! Glad to hear it. I've been collecting radio shows for about 40 years now, these are all from that collection. Thanks for checking out the channel, there is a lot more Jack Benny to come.
Timeless comedy gold. Funny, is funny. No matter how many times you see it.
Don is gay?
I don't believe so. He had 3 wives if that means anything.
I get super excited by any new stuff by JB! Thanks for posting. 🙏❤
Thanks for checking out the Channel. Lots more Jack to come, I'll be posting one or two every day!
@@mikegillettcomedy737 Please. 👍
Great stuff...thank you!!
Thanks for checking out my channel. More Charlie McCarthy to come.
I love Mary’s laugh
Has anyone ever seen Dennis Day and Kenny Baker in the same room?
You are so right - they sound very similar when singing and Dennis stepped right into the same character that Kenny played. The story goes that Kenny Baker left Jack's show because he hated playing the simpleton character. Kenny went on to other radio shows, including Fred Allen's show, and after the war got his own show.
Jack Benny was funny
Kate Smith's manager, Ted Collins, didn't think this routine would go over and kept refusing to allow Abbott and Costello to perform it on Kate's radio show. Until. Bud Abbott said one day that he and Lou just couldn't come up with a comedy routine for that day's radio show. Ted finally relented and allowed them to perform "Who's On First?" Show Biz history!
So great, and so much funnier because of the performance. Masters at work. Costello's fantastic timing and the artistry of his "Slow Burn" as the frustration builds. And Bud Abbott is the perfect straight man. A match made in heaven. Thanks for checking it out.
I do not know if this is a remake of "Golf Specialist" or the original, but I like the caddy on "Golf Specialist" better than this one. He acted and looked more like the "lame brain" type. He reminded me more of Stan Laurel.
Mary had the best laugh ever
I absolutely agree. It warms my heart every time I hear it. I also love listening to Mary crack a joke at Jack's expense just before that laugh. Thanks for checking out my channel.
During silent films, people could read better.
First! Mr 39. The master at work
It's like hearing the punch line without hearing the joke.
If you have a bad day, just watch W.C. Fields - genius
Thank you for uploading this. I've never heard it before. He sounds painfully self-conscious here. This is so different from the self-assured presence he would soon become. This is a small but important piece of American cultural history.
Yes, when I first heard it I thought the exact same thing. The addition of a live studio audience really helped his comic timing, and in this first appearance he hasn't yet developed his comic persona. He jokes about someone else being cheap, for example. When he becomes the cheapskate and he is the butt of the jokes, his show gets much funnier. As I think you'll see in the others on this playlist. Thanks for checking it out, these vids are a true labor of love and its great to know you viewed it.
So boring!!!
You're not wrong about this episode, but what amazes me is how good he got as the years went by. He really learned how to use radio for comic effect. Check out some of the 1937 or 1938 episodes in the playlist. Let me know if you think they're funny. Thanks for checking out the channel.
I was born in 1980, and Even though it was the Great Depression I still love 1934, only because the music was great the radio shows are were awesome and all of the vehicles look a hell of a lot better than they do today!! It was just according to my grandmother a special time that is no longer with us? Other than that you did a great job putting this together.
Thank you for Listening - these podcasts are a true labor of love, so much wonderful talent to rediscover.
Yes and it's people like us that are trying to keep the history alive.
Since we don't have a grandparents anymore, To tell us about them.
other than that, you're very welcome, and hope you enjoy your holidays!!
Cool seeing this (hadn’t heard of him) but I would argue that his deliver sounds quite a bit like Will Rogers who I’m still convinced is America’s pioneer of ‘modern stand up’. Never the less- thanks for sharing!
You're right about Will Rogers, his monologs are in the tradition of Mark Twain. I'm sure Frank Fay crossed paths with him on the Vaudeville Circuit back in the day. But Will Rogers was so much more than a comic. His rope tricks are legendary. When he had a big enough budget he'd do horse tricks as well. He did comic sketches and big production numbers in the Follies. His newspaper column was a huge success.
That was actually funny! The precursor to the modern stand-ups! Fay was not a good person in his personal life, which also makes me think of Cosby (also brilliant on stage!) but I'm glad I got to see this! Wow! 100 years ago!
All the comedians of the time agree that Frank was the best, but they also agree that he was a real jerk.
+Probably the greatest comedian ever. My opinion of course. November, 2022.
The utter madness of these guys, choreographed to a tee. The whole act was far more complex than it might seem at first blush.
Superb
Thank you! Cheers!
Unlike Chaplin who's comic career faded after the silents (his comic pantomime routinues had lost interest with the public by the 1930s), Fields was the opposite. Fields was a,verbal comic who's career got better after the silents.
A great man ,my dad went to his camp ⛺️ selfless and caring
Maddeningly hilarious.
He was a human cartoon
Hi Mike! New fan here. OTR buff. Shot in the dark but do you know much about old Dragnet radio shows? The first episode aired June 3, 1949. But nobody I know can locate it online or in a collection. Do you know if it exists? Thanks!- Steve In Kirkland, Wa
Hi Steve, Check out archive.org/details/oldtimeradio?query=dragnet for free episodes you can download. Check out the Radio Spirits catalog if you are looking to buy DVDs. Thanks for checking out my youtube, try my podcast WHEN RADIO RULED for stuff from my collection.
1937 was huge for Bergen and his regular guest, WC Fields. Thanks!
Thank you for listening. Bergen and Fields were giants of comedy.
Did he curse about the hat sticking???
Never could understand the appeal of healy, well named, the heel. Not funny.
I agree. I don't think his comedy aged well. However, vaudeville was a very different animal than early film. He was very successful in vaudeville, and the 3 stooges were not his original stooges. He worked with his wife and other comedians as stooges before he hooked up with the Horowitz/Howards. The concept and execution of a lot of stooges slapstick came from Ted Healey
That's so funny. Great pantomime. Timing.
Glad you think so!
Gold!
So much fun!
I see where elvis got his hair from
They were both pretty cool in their day
love the part afterwords they crawl into the room n groucho says GET UP THATS NO WAY TO ENTER A SPEAK EASY THATS THE WAY U COME OUT lol
Its only funny because its true
Idk if this ch is still active but I do hope so. We have much of the same taste in comedy. Tysm! EB was a comedic genius! 🤩😍
The Channel is indeed still going, although most of my energy lately has been focused on the WHEN RADIO RULED podcast so things have slowed down at youtube for me. I will be releasing JUST THE CHARLIE BITS 1938 in a few weeks.
@@mikegillettcomedy737 Thanks for the reply Mike and for the info about your podcast. I look forward to just the Charlie bits 👍🏼👏😁
I’m memorizing the script for my school right now, I have to be off book in 2 weeks T-T
I hope the show went well. I love this script so much. What role(s) did you play?
Who is the actress here with W. C.?
Adrienne Ames, former Chorus Girl for George White's Scandals.
Great Python sketch, one of my favourites.
A favorite of mine as well.
This is easily my favorite of the 5 MGM shorts. It gives a good look into their vaudeville show. Moe and Curly do a similar "dance" at the end of Woman Haters.
Curly was really a great physical comedian - I'm hard pressed to think of a more controlled/graceful Large man American slapstick artist. Maybe Fatty Arbuckle but its close.
@@mikegillettcomedy737 It may seem unlikely to add your list, but Chris Farley's movement was actually very balletic...in his way.
