    I was listening to Johnny Cash's last album, an album with memorable covers like Hurt. There is something about this receiver that puts you right into the recording studio. I'm using you very affordable Micca MB42X speakers. For streaming and to connect my DVD player for CDs, I use a Fiio BR13 Bluetooth DAC - I use the bluetooth to connect my phone or tablets for streaming music. This receiver has a pure, clean depth to its sound. I feel like Johnny is singing a personal concert to me. Amazing 1970s vintage greatness from Yamaha.

    Hum, speaker terminals will not improve the sound of your receiver or amp. It just allow to use larger speaker cables or terminals.

    • @rickreviews3325
      @rickreviews3325 5 месяцев назад

      certain speaker terminals can improve quality by increasing the pressure on the wire from the terminal. The increased pressure decreases the impedance in the wire.

    Not mentioning the tons of work and new parts on that unit!..let alone the cost that the shop charged...I rebuild all my vintage audio myself...easy work,parts are abundant and it's a great hobby for those of us with a true love for vintage audio... videos like this is for lazy people who want everything done for them because their pockets can afford it! Helps boost the ego or bragging rights factor amongst the new generation yuppie communities also!!😮😮😊

    My dad gave his Yamaha to Goodwill. I immediately went there but it was gone. A couple years later, I found his Yamaha cassette deck at a junk shop. I knew it was his because of a scratch I accidentally made as a kid. After I recovered the tape deck, I inquired about the receiver. It was bought by a local fire department for the town dances. A short time later, I found a CR-820 an an antique shop that sells records. It is a couple models down from what dad had, but I love it and it recaptures the memories of jamming to the records and tapes.

    I have been a stereo/sound guy for a long time. I had a big Kenwood 8010 receiver 120 WPC and had fun with it. I bought a Yamaha R-100 in the mid 80's because it was a standard 17" wide had a digital tuner and a remote. I still have it and it sounds amazing. I missed the look of the old analog receivers and remembered my roommate had an CR-820. I finally found one and have been enjoying the vintage sound and look. I'm glad you are enjoying your Yamaha. Seeing younger people experiencing vintage equipment makes me happy. They are fairly easy to fix, tough to kill and sound great. Being able to connect older and newer technology together and increase functionality is a great idea. I often use my new/old i-pod with my pro audio or home gear. Unlike the old days it is great to have 80 gig of music without lugging hundreds of albums around. It is nice not having to stream or use Bluetooth when the signal is poor.

    Video. I just bought my first receiver and it is a Yamaha cr-820 and I like it a lot, even though it has very sensitive knobs to the touch (especially the volume). But what concerns me the most at the moment is the temperature of your transformer. I immediately thought of adapting some kind of fan, but I would like to know if you have any experience with this idea. Thank you very much I remain attentive to your comment

    Nice job. I have a whole herd of vintage receivers. Yamaha may have the best sound to my ears compared to many that I've owned. Sony is great, too, similar to Marantz sound. Of course that depends on the years of manufacture. I didn't care for my Pioneer SX-850, thin mid range where most of the music lives. These old units as you appreciate are beautiful, built like tanks and worth preserving. I hate AV receivers.

    How would that act with a focal clear?

    • @rickreviews3325
      @rickreviews3325 2 года назад

      The Focal Clears are an HK product and they do a wonderful job of recreating sound. The headphones are capable of delivering sound quality high enough a listener could tell difference between quality recordings and DACs if they have a trained ear. 90% of listeners would NOT be able to decipher between an Apple dongle and a Topping d90 DAC mainly because the difference is so small. The Focal Clears have a low impedance of 55 Ohms and a high sensitivity of 104dB SPL / 1mW @ 1kHz. This means they are easier to drive compared to a lot of the other headphones in the Audio HiFi market.

  • @Bodhipixel

    Good presentation, and I also definitely appreciate anyone trying to cut through all the hype. DACs almost seem to be the most esoteric link in the audiophile chain, and anything that helps make them less mysterious and better understood is actually helpful. I have been using this dongle with a Schitt Heresy, and have been pretty happy with what it can do. I’m sure I’ll upgrade both amp and dac someday, but for now I am still reveling in hearing things in music I’ve never before appreciated. And there is at least one major audiophile blogger who has extolled the virtues of this dongle, although your presentation certainly goes into more detail. Thanks, and keep going, and I think you’ll get there someday if you keep up the quality reviews.

    Rather than going with a DAC couldn’t your just plug directly into your TV via the headphone/aux jack on the TV? What extra advantage does the DAC offer? Also, by plugging right into the TV headphone/aux jack you can control the volume through the TV remote.

    • @rickreviews3325
      @rickreviews3325 2 года назад

      You can most definitely plug it directly into your tv but depending on what you want it's not the best choice. The DAC in your tv is probably very cheap and my guess is it has a bit of jitter resalting in a sound floor. Cheap DACs do not mean they are bad, the Apple dongle is probable the best you can get for the money. This setup also allows you to stream the sound in setups without a TV.

    I have to agree with you in this issue. The apple dongle is a great measuring dac. And honestly unless your listening to tital lossless service or flax files your not gonna miss anything using this dac. For the average listener just looking for good sound not necessarily audiophile sound. You cant go wrong with this dac. It’s pretty loud and sounds really clear on my iPhone X. I think I would rather spend the money on a better set of heaphones than buy a dac that’s really not gonna make that much of a difference in sound. Theoretically the dac should be the last item you upgrade. Because a $200 dac on a $25 pair of headphones is still gonna sound like a $25 pair of headphones. But a $200 pair of headphones are gonna sound great no matter what dac your using. Of course I have to power by large headphones with a separate amp I just use my receivers headphone output for a little extra punch

    • @rickreviews3325
      @rickreviews3325 2 года назад

      I agree 100%. What receiver are you using?

    • @jamband4230
      @jamband4230 2 года назад

      @@rickreviews3325 it’s an old kenwood surround receiver KR-V7050 It’s like 20 yrs old. But it has a headphone output and the surround controls has a “presence” button. It changes the soundstage of the music. I can bring the music sound closer to my head or make it sound wider away. It’s a really cool effect if I want to listen to some casual listening I make the sound wider and it opens up the soundstage for me and if I wanna really pump some EDM or heavy rock I can bring it in closer and it sound more powerful without blowing the headphones up. I also like that I have tone controls cause I like to add a little extra bass to my music. I like a V sound shape to my music I prefer to dial my own sound in. I don’t like the presets on my phone so using a receiver is the best of both worlds for me. If I just use a headphone amp I lose control over the music. And I listen to a lot of RUclips music so having the extra control is a must for me

    There should be a lot more videos like this on YT. I tried a few external DACs, but I always came back to the apple. The price / quality ratio is unbeatable. Unfortunately, the market does everything to make us think that something costs more, the better it is. If Apple's dongle cost $ 200, everyone would buy it

    Hey Rick. New subber. Also a big fan of AudioScienceReview as I believe the audio industry is full of car salesman looking to tale advantage because so many people don't understand audio. I almost bought a dongle but found my old Galaxy S9 has a great DAC built in and powers my KPH30i very well. Come to find many old phones that still have headphone jacks like many the LG Q7,v30, v40, S8, S9 etc are actually better than many mobile gear like the ear studio and component gear. Many people dont realkze they're carrying a great DAC streamer in their pocket.
