Haywood SuperPump 1.5 HP was tripping circuit breaker and was a bear to troubleshoot. Found it was improperly installed and could have led to further equipment and bodily harm.....after I already had ordered a new pump.

Wow! I've been replacing 40+ year old wiring on my setup as well, everything absolutely rusted, switched burnt, failed crumbling metal underground conduit. Astonishing it still ran at all, but kept tripping the circuit breaker - maybe a dozen different problems tripping it at this point. Probably at-least 2 decades of the underground cabling running wet, had a few times I was cleaning the pump filter and felt a little bit of electricity in the water.

And yes whoever installed that pinched your wire lol. Whoops. Those covers actually when you take the two 1/4" screws out usually need a good mallet wack to get off.

That Harris pump is as good as garbage man. Unfortunately you get what you pay for. Also good luck getting parts for them. Number ones reason motors trip breakers is loose wiring. Bad caps or clogged impeller causing water flow issue. Single speed pumps use water to cool them. And yes average tenp of a running single speed is 205 degrees on average. We get this call a lot that my pump is hot. Lol. It's normal. Why people are grabbing their motors I don't know exactly. Also I've seen people wire pumps wrong. Most can be wired 240 or 120. However I've seen people use a 120 line and hook it up to pump with a 240 switch engaged lol. It will run at half speed. And trip eventually. Good troubleshooting. Windings inside motors also short out due to shaft seal leaks. I see this a ton as well. Best of luck with the Harris. Guess it will work in a pinch.

Hey brother- great video! I had the EXACT same issue (with a pool company installing & crap wiring- along with SEVERAL pin hole/ air leaks in the pvc...). Glad to hear someone else from Franklin TN- even if for, frankly, potentially deadly company actions... I have several Heyward motors (all from .75hp to 2hp) & rigged up my last replaced one [1.5 hp] as a portable vacuum with external 12v AC plug & a cheap(ish) cartridge filter. Have it fixed on a handtruck (pump with filter on top) and use it to vacuum/clean when/if the main pool pump is older/been run dry/etc. Can choose whether or not to filter back in to pool or direct to waste... just a thought. I'm by no means the only person who has done this of course- so truly sorry if post is redundant & useless... Hopefully see ya around Franklin friend! (I work as a fire-medic & in ER/ICU so hopefully not that way...!)

This is exactly why I do all my 'ELECTRICAL WORK' and never hire NO ONE !!!! A sides that i just do not TRUST no one else .But when you have no choice that puts you on the shadow of vulnerability leaving the window open for the saboteur, and yes it could've easily been drawn off the plane of a careless hurry up 'error' or forbid the enmity thought (keep me coming boomeranging around so i just replace your capacitor and outrageously scam charge you) for the milky honey opportunity. I know we all desire to still reside on The JUNE CLEAVER WORLD where everybody is trustworthy. And must i remind you ? THE DEMOCRATS have killed that world! And they have let in THE UN-VETTED ! And chances are that you may get a VULGARIAN ex-con to install your pool pump!! ask for ID ! And do not accept the MASSACHUESETTS ones!

Another dangerous thing is that I went to do a weekly maintenance for a pool (they take of their separate spa) and showed up on a Sunday while they were at the cottage. Opened the pool house door and everything was torched. Jumping jet mother boards, 3 pumps, 2 filters, flex hose, sanitizers, you name it - destroyed. Called the fire department and worked with the investigator to help him determine the cause which was that they put a opened bucket of spa shock next to the pool chems and someone closed the roof vent. Closing the roof vent stifled oxygen and disaster but also allowed the chemicals to marry. This is the most dangerous and least recognized pool/spa concerns (mixing and storing chemicals improperly).

Your dog looks pissed off because he didnt get lifetime treats and a parade. He was thinking his bark woukd save the entire family and structure if the pump lit on fire and was waiting but you showed him! LOL. I do a pool service business on the side only because neighbours kept asking me for help so at night or weekends rather than a pub (inground only) and there have been so many times where I have witnessed inept mech/elec/structural/chem installs and recommendatons that they keep me in business. Love the new 3 speed timed pump. Pentair makes a great one as well. The old skool pump gets hot yes but is a work horse. More importantly, you made others wise and you are safe. Jasper

You keep saying hire a professional but you say you did. You hired a pool company probably cause they were professional licenced and all. There is no way to know date you trying to say how an ex poo experienced person. Cause I knew a plumber with Over 59 year experience and no licenced not a so called professional but a shit load of experience knew what to and not to do. Some handyman are handy man because of the experience some just because they cannot get a license . There is no way to know other than TO have references, know a person has real knowledge and something people lack today COMMON SENSE!!!?

Just had two days of hard rain now the breaker keeps tripping immediately when trying to start the pump. Replaced the outdoor plug. Still trips. I’m guessing lots of moisture got into the pump vents I’m not sure. Waiting for a hot day to troubleshoot the pump further.

Having the same problem right now on my Hayward. When I plug it into the outlet it will make a humming noise then trip the breaker. If I keep resetting the breaker and plugging it in then eventual it will start. Did you ever find the issue for yours?

@@dionmatthews2799 Yes i did pump was shot. Replaced the whole thing. You may be able to hold out for another year. If it just started you may possibly be able to stretch it for two years. I would try to cover it so it doesnt get wet and cause more corrison inside. I remember always being nervous when i would go to turn it on that it would trip.

One thing that you said which I found ironic was “don’t try to do it yourself, & make sure you hire a professional”. You said that it was installed by a company (professional) there in Tennessee. A lot of “professionals“ just flat out, do shitty work. As a homeowner if you are privy to what needs to be done you are more likely going to make sure that it is done properly because it’s your house. You’re a homeowner that found out what was going on in the first place what are the odds you would wire it back and have that same problem? Just my thoughts. Thanks for the video very helpful.

Hi, did you end up installing the Harris pump? I have attempted to install 2 of them and each one has been flakey...they look like very nice pumps but something not right and returned 2 of them..not sure if I want to go for a 3rd....I dont know whats wrong I have 2 pole 20 amp GFCI breaker, attached and the Harris pump just beeps...i got it to work one time but then never again. I have even tried a straight non-gfci 2 pole 2o amp and no different. I am on the fence to install he Harris again for a 3rd time. Any feedback appreciated!
