A few Flowrider runs at Aquatopia. 10/23/24. Camelback Resort, Poconos, PA.
Since Kalahari’s wave is closed for refurbishing, I went to ride over at Aquatopia. For the first time in 10 months, I got to ride with my buddy from the Split Rock days, who was getting warmed up for his cruise on Symphony next week. He started giving me sh*t for always telling everyone to post some video, yet I haven't posted anything in a while. Lol! So, I broke out the phone and tripod. Here are a few of the runs.

Intro to Flowcoach Flowriding Instructional Channel
Is the frontside or the backside spins easier?
I personally think backside spins are easier, but lots of other riders think frontside are easier. Everyone's brain works differently.
Excellent fluid riding with an amazing assortment of tricks!
fluid and effortless,,lol. I think RCCL staff may frown on that reentry though,,lol
The looks on their faces would probably be worth it though
you make it look so easy ..... i give it an other try in 2 weeks on Anthem 😀
Nice Runs!!!....looks dead...private session?.....I'll be on Symphony next week too :)
You'll meet my buddy Ron. He's a good rider. This was regular hours, not a private. Slow season in the Poconos.
Great video, Andy.
awesome timing. I will be on a ship in just over a week :) thanks !!
Wouldn't be Symphony by chance? :)
@@beeto555 yup :)
@@emegarry1 I'll be on Symphony next week too...bringing wetsuit for day 1 :)

how do you do 360 frontside?
Could do a whole video on it, but here's the primary tip. When you go do a frontside carve, your weight shifts from heavy on your tail foot (70%), to heavy on your front foot to make the turn, then the weight shifts back to your tail foot to stop the turn and send you off in the opposite direction. When doing a frontside 360 , as you frontside carve into it, you now want to keep your weigh on your front foot. Don't shift your weight back to your tail foot. That will keep you spinning to get the 360. Keep more of your weight on your front foot as you spin, then shift it to the tail when you're ready to stop the spin. Keep your edges up, and practice the balance. You'll get it!
Thanks coach! Heading to a wave today in the UK. I’ll make sure to get this video up when that happens to me and follow through the steps while already wiped out 😂 Some amazing tips here- much appreciated
lol!
Andy, another great piece of advice is encouraging beginners, in particular, to relax as much as possible. As you know, when you tense up, your body is rigid and it becomes extremely difficult to move you arms and hips.
Love that advice! Relaxing is the secret for pretty much every sport.
Andy, A very comprehensive beginners tutorial for RCCL. Very impressive that you were able to cover all the nuances never being on board ship yourself. Great research! It's amazing through all my cruises, the guards never instruct on proper foot placement, even in the lessons. It is always more centered with the rear foot much to far forward.
Thanks Scott. I appreciate your input on this video!
i think they alternate the blue/white band on which one is advanced, ive gotten the white band as the advanced band on some cruises.
Apparently it depends on how much stock of each color band they have for that cruise.
Great video! I wish I had this when I started riding earlier this year ;) Thanks for including my carving lesson clip. Highly recommend the paid lesson sessions.
Thanks Amanda. Your Facebook thread asking for advice on this test was the reason that this video was made.
Another great video Coach. Probably should have stayed away from the bigger carving techniques for the purposes of this beginner video to pass the RCCL "advanced rider" test though. The test is extremely subjective from guard, guard which causes frustration for many cruisers but RCCL is doing all they can to minimize risk and additional litigation from travelers who want to try standup but probably should stick to body boarding for their own good. Best tip I can give is don't get an attitude with the guards. Their subjective opinions will likely be more lenient if you build a good report with them. One of the biggest loading mistakes I see is people just try to push off and stand up way too fast. Slow and steady is the key when starting out. Another big mistake I see is people push themselves in starting with the board at an angle and and this rarely ends up good. I try to tell people to make sure the board is parallel to the side line of the wave when pushing themselves in. Your description of Weight shift 70% back is excellent and slight movements from heels then toes to slowly control side to side motion usually results in passing the test. Keep up the great work. I only ride when on ships and your videos have helped me tremendously. Hoping for an empty wave for our New England cruise in Octoburrrrr😁🏄👍
Thanks for the input. Since part of this test is demonstrating controlled movement across the wave, I had to show people how you actually steer a flowboard. It's the same technique whether you are beginner slowly moving across the wave or a pro spraying massive amounts of water. I hope that I was able to explain the technique well and then demonstrate that minimal steering (carving) movement is best for this test. Also, I love the comment about the guards. Whatever Flowrider you're at, always get to know the guards and staff in general. Not only are they usually some of the coolest people to hang with, but they are also great to ride with!

Chris Haddock commented: "As usual, great video Andy. You hit all the major points. As you mentioned, I would highly recommend a lesson as they are only around $70 per person and they teach 4 to 8 people at a time but everyone seems to learn so much better and quicker. Maybe because you don't have a large group looking at you as you are trying to learn. I learned back when the staff could hold on to you to get you out."
Thanks for the video. We went on the RC symphony of the seas cruise this summer. Everyone automatically gets a blue band. However we got a white band when we passed the stand up test 😊
Thanks for a great video! Nice to see Brian Housty again!
Brian is the one who contacted me to make the video. Good call on his part.
On the symphony Feb 2023, one new rider I thought would qualify for a blue band was denied. He lasted a good 20-30 seconds, but was more reactionary, and just stood in the center of the wave. Afterwards talking to the staff, they told me they are looking for balance and control. so staying on the board for 20+seconds, but also a basic ability to toeside-heelside turn,, just a basic drift in each direction to demonstrate control
@@emegarry1 I wish it was consistent. It’s not. Sometimes they hand them out too easily.
Haha the clip of me grabbing the wave, leaning on my front knee, just shows how good grabbing the wave works to stabilize you sometimes. For the record I don't have to do that to stay upright anymore (usually) :D Another great video, thanks Andy!
Grabbing that water spraying behind you is a great way to stay straight. Glad the RCFS riders mentioned it to me. When I saw that video of you, I was thinking "This is perfect for that part of the video!" Thanks. Post some fresh video of your riding on RCFS group page. We would love to see it.
Great video Andy! Something that really messed me up in the beginning and still catches me occasionally that most flowguards and instructors don't seem to pick up on. If your back foot heel is sticking off the board the wave will catch it and keep kicking the board to the side. I've seen several new riders (including myself) that struggle and struggle until they get that heel all of the way on the board, if your toes are hanging off a little it's not as significant. When pushing in it's often helpful to move further up the wave where the current has come closer to the wall stronger, you can't go too high or the guards get nervous but a little higher helps you get into good water faster, especially helpful for bigger riders like me. The advice to focus straight on the side wall is great, when I was trying the guards kept saying "look at me" and when I turned my head my shoulders followed and I immediately fell.
Another good one. Thanks to you for all your knowledge!!❤
Great video!❤
Cory Fazio just messaged me this: "Just seen you posted a video I did not watch it yet but no test for advanced pass on liberty all you have to do is body board from one side to the other and you get advanced stand up pass if you brought your own board plus special release if you brought your board. Just a fyi"
Wow that’s terrible. I heard that wade was bad anyway
They may be making the assumption that if somebody has dropped $300-500 on a board they probably can stand up on it. Maybe not a safe assumption.
Totally agree with @jaculpiii. Doesn't sound like they're just handing out blue bands. If you have a flowboard and you made the effort to travel with it onto the ship, then you probably know how to ride.
@@jaculpiii unless they already know me, they still make me do the boogie test even though I bring my own board
I love the details in these explanations, exactly what i was looking for. Keep it up 👍
Thank you. I have a place I can do this near me and this helped me a lot. I had always done a surfing stance because I was used to it.
Great to hear. Once people get used to the skateboard stance, then their riding really takes off. Have fun on the wave.
@@flowcoach3714 Thanks
Thanks for the great advice. Now I know why I keep losing it on heel turns
Glad it helped. Little details make such a big difference.
It's cool seeing you wear Kona gear and ride the same wave at kalahari that I started on. Where are you on the east coast?
@@flowcoach3714I just learned that there is a famous flow board rider with the same name as my dad. I go by Chas. In other news I tried to buy a board from a brick and mortar store this weekend so I could ride at Moreys in Wildwood. You have to bring your own. No one sells them but after speaking to Chris at the Kona board house he is gonna look into making them. If you also showed interest in getting one it might help my chances of having something that as of now no one else in the world has. A Kona flow rider board.
Lol! I thought you were pro flowboarder Chuck Wright. He's one of the legends in the sport. If you are going to get a board, then use an actual flowboard company. While I'm sure Kona could make a board, I wouldn't want their initial attempts at it. My best advice is buy a Aquaflow board made by Winfield Austin, or a MAK board made by Jeremie Miller. Both of these guys ride extremely well, and both are master flowboard makers. They are the owners, sole board makers, have made hundreds/thousands of boards, and can get you set up properly. They have their methods down, and will build you a board that will perform and last. Trust me on this.
Thanks. I have a Royal Caribbean cruise coming up and these vids will help me be the best of the best! Question, the nearest flowrider to Taxachusetts is Jay Peak Vermont. Am I correct or am I missing a location? I'd love to ride more
Check Flowrider.com. They have a list of all of their waves on the site. There is also a Pacific Surf Wave in NH. whalestalewaterpark.net Jay Peak has a great group of locals, so if you can ride with them, then they will give you a ton of great tips! Good luck at the BOB.
How much does an advanced session cost after you get the pro pass? And Is there anyway to bypass having to do all three beginner sessions just to get the pro pass?
I would check their website or call them for prices and requirements. I didn't have to do any beginner sessions, because I know how to ride good enough. I assume (but don't hold me to it) that it is up to the flowguards to judge your skill level and determine if the full wave is appropriate for you. Give them a call and find out before you go!
@@flowcoach3714 thanks. And thanks for posting this. Can't wait

Oh man did not know this existed so close to me. So $37 is just to get into the park and you have to purchase wave time separately? Thanks for the video!
Yes, $37 to get in. That covers a lot of free activities once you are in. They charge extra for the wave time and golf simulator. Their website would tell you what's included.
@@flowcoach3714 what time/day of the week did you go where you ended up getting the wave all to yourself?
I rode the wave on a Saturday from 12-1 in the afternoon. There were some kids riding the wave both before my sessions and afterward, but none of them wanted any part of that full wave. The kids were doing the "beginner" sessions where just the standard right side of the wave was in use.
