Mutant Year Zero: Zone Wars Rules and Gameplay
Different ethos to me and our group. We put a lot of effort into our games, a large table 12x4 most times, 100's of figures, scenery buildings etc. The last thing we want is for the game to be over in an hour what a disapointment. To arrange the meet up when all are avalaibale, set aside the day and all turn up i and i think most of our guys want the game to last for as long as possible. We usually start around 10am and go ontill 6 to 7pm. Thats a good days gaming for me.
@@knightschallenge9447 I can remember games like that - often playing Battletech or 40K (5th edition, perhaps?). They were a lot of fun. These days, between job and kids, I have to fit games in when and where I can. I can play once or twice a week this way, with sessions tending to be 2 to 3 hours long. Have to ask, what games are you playing on a 12 x 4 table?
@@The.Game.Cave. We fit a 12x4 table in one of the lads houses. Its only a normal sized bungalow but we can get a 12x4 in the kitchen or the living room. When we have a summer :DDD we set up outside, on hobby horses and a set of ladders lay some boards on the ladders and that gets us an 18x4. Have done 12x6, but its hard to reach the middle. We fight Renaissance, Medieval, Ancients, AWI, 40mm ACW and 28mm WW2. We fight around once every 3 to 4 weeks and i don't think thats a problem for most, even with children. The wive's have their time away from the ranch so only seems fair that we do as well.
@knightschallenge9447 Excellent! Sounds very cool - and any time we get to chuck dice is a good time. 🙂
Always happy to see you do more MYZZW videos
Rather different faction, i can see zone ..things being their bane with a little bad luck. Better have a fellow robot near you to help need be!
@@PMMagro Very true! I spent one game fighting zone critters more than my opponents!
They look like they have a lot of interesting abilities that others don’t have. Though there lack of innate movement modules to let them nip around the battlefield can be hard (makes sense with them being clunky robots though)
@@Aneirinprime Yep - no frog-legs or burrowing for these clankers - though jet-pack is pretty cool!
Great video! I will be getting the expansion soon! I like the depth you go into for strategies too.
@@pdj672Cool - roll out the metal dudes!
I am looking forward to your 4th installment of the series. I was thinking of running the scenario you created but with a psionic character actually controlling the dogs.
@@pdj672Sounds fun!
I can only agree 100% with your vision of the game, the rules and simply fun around a game table! I love Deadzone, I dream of testing Firefight. Thank you for your videos, it feels good in the tons of channels oriented towards competition... no interest to me!
@lebondave4377 😊 Thanks. Games are about fun for me. Glad that chimes with you too!
I am rather fond of extolling the virtues of Deadzone, despite the requirement for their terrain. I use it as a miniature agnostic system, and the simplicity of the rules allows for some easy yet effective house rules to season the game design to taste. It seems to be the sci-fi equivalent of Warcry, as they both occupy a very similar design sphere. So it is an easy recommend to Warcry players; and is the reason I sought out Deadzone in the first place.
I hope that the Deadzone ‘system’ will receive a boost, when Halo: Flashpoint comes out - which very much a variant.
I bought this game mostly on your recommendation. Will get the expansion soon too.
It’s a great game. Have fun!
great to see Zone Wars being played. I recently picked it up and looking forward to getting stuck into it 😄
@ArxAngelicum It's a really fun game. I will be releasing a tactics video for the Mechatron Hive in a few days. 😀
zone wars is my group's current intro to the table top, loving it
@@Janisurai It’s a top game. I shall be releasing a tactics video for the Mechatron Hive shortly.
Good to see Dust making your "honorary" list. We're actually playing out the entire Dust catalog on our Weird WWII channel if you wanna check it out.
@@weirdwwii8775 Nice. I shall have a look.
Deadzone is an absolute MVP for skirmish SF - the starter gives you everything you need, and the game just does everything right mechanically, the cube system is a game changer. The only nitpick I have is that they paywalled the listbuilder app, they really shouldn't have done that as it put some people off, for what, a few more bucks in the pocket(is it even profit if people stop playing the game)? Other skirmish SF games with a solid 2-player starter I would recommend to have a look at are CYBERPUNK RED - COMBAT ZONE by Monster Fight Club, and BLKOUT by Enemy Spotted Studios(I believe both also offer a free rulebook on their homepages to try before you buy). And for the "just a PDF rulebook - miniature agnostic" option, I recommend having a look at ZONE RAIDERS and/or SPACE WEIRDOS. And finally for SOLO play, you can't go wrong with FIVE PARSECS FROM HOME. Cheers for the video! Keep up the good work, looking forward to see more
Oh, and for the mech lovers, I'd like to give a shout to FLAMES OF ORION, still in beta, but a lovely, fast and FREE ruleset for "mechanized combat in a dark future"!
Deadzone is fantastic. I'v eyet to get in a game of Firefight but I went in on the first KS having had positive experiences with Kings of War. Alpha strike is a favorite of mine and an added bonus is being able to use Heroscape hex tiles to make maps for battle. It works quite well. One thing I highly suggest is trying a miniatures agnostic game. Xenos Rampant is a great one to try as you can take the plunge and stat up any models you like and have a game. GW Space marines versus Ewoks...no problem, you can make that happen.
@Skulliver-t8q Firefight is well worth trying if you get the chance. I like the idea of Heroscape tiles in Alpa Strike - very clever. Have you tried the Hextech scenery? That also looks great. I came very close to picking up Xenos Rampant at UK Games Expo this year. It does look cool.
Highly recommend Deadzone. If Kill Team seems a bit too overwhelming, 3rd edition Deadzone is a very good alternative. I feel the grid-system scares away most people, but it is wonderfully implemented and doesn't take away from the traditional dynamic movement of using gauges and measuring tapes in other wargames.
@DominionDee I completely agree. The grid system simplifies the game - which I have always found to have better rules than Kill Team.
Deadzone is such a good game! I feel sad more people are not playing it, and what makes me even more sad is that a lot of people won't even try it because they keep waiting for GW to 'fix' Kill Team. Deadzone IS IT! No fixing needed, it runs smooth as butter, and you can even play it with GW models (KT or other) if you don't like what Mantic offers...
@mirankramar3111 I agree. Mantic struggle to gain traction with certain games despite their excellent design. I do think Halo Flashpoint will do well, though - which uses many of the same rules as Daedzone.
I think plutonia is a she?
Balance your audio please. Goodness broke my ears
I like that there is a connection to the planets and not just open space but some more "naval" style fighting seesm easy to add. Escort a ship/drop/somone from the planet away, find x, destroy a certain ship or X smaller ships with limited time....
I think that there will be missions attacking shipping lanes. These might occur 'in space'.
They seem a bit to similar to the Scourge to me, Scourge need a host and these Bioficers also so far have a huge appetite for bio-mass (for it's own sake). But they could be an interresting twist. The Scourge might take ovre the bodies of others and inhabit them while the Bioficers "eat/consume them to keep going (for some AI-hivemind reason)?
As I understand it, the Bioficers build drones from biomass, temporarily shifting their consciousness on-board. The Bioficers exist only as digital intelligences. I think they will play in a way that's quite distinct from the Scourge. I can't wait to see this on the tabletop. 🙂
Hi Carl, how do the Zone Wars figures compare with Zombicide figures? Can you use them in the same game?
I enjoyed watching that Carl, you two are too nice to each other, the needs to be more anger with those dice rolls.
It’s all good-natured fun! Mind you, I’ve yet to beat Ni in a filmed play-through!
@@The.Game.Cave. it’s Ni though, he is a Grand Master of Board Games! Keep up the great content!
@@mozshigdar8792 Thanks, dude! One day, I will actually win a game. 😉
At 31:19 the attack from Angrboda to Echidna, those 2 hits shouldn't have hit, as Echidna ignores first 2 wounds by monsters
If you roll on, you’ll see that Ni realised that - and lamented how much Echidna’s ability had blocked damage! 😊
Wonderful video! Mythic Battles has so much immeasurable depth, I wonder why it's not as popular as some other Wargames. Marsyas is such a strategy-destroyer, I love it.
Thanks! Glad you liked it. Mythic Battles is one of my favourite ever games. I pledged all-in for Isfet (with Ni, my opponent in the game), so I plan to keep playing for quite a while yet!
@@The.Game.Cave. We are also insurmountably excited to play and cover Isfet and the other expansions for MBP and MBR.
This was a great playthrough and The Lighter, The Darker love The Units Of Mythic Battles series!
@@spppooookkkyy It's a top game!
are the river tiles you are using from battlesystems?
@@pdj672 They are! The reverse is a cobbled path, I think. I love Battle Systems terrain. 🙂
At 19:58 you spend a die to turn a 3 into a 5. Not allowed unfortunately.
Well spotted! Ni's a pretty honest guy - I'm sure it was an honest mistake. 🙃
I was here to comment that as well! 😅
Nicely painted, not my style of game though. 😅
Fair enough!
Odd that One Hour Wargames (Neil Thomas) never got a mention, easy intro to historical wargaming on a small table (3footx3 foot but easily adapted to 2 foot square. Another good intro for historicals is Bob Cordery's Portable Wargames, not many figures required and can be played out on as small an area as a chess board.
Both great suggestions - I haven't had a chance to play either (yet!).
😂 how do you like them apples!
@@paulcrowther4514 Lol! Not so much. Did you see how I actually rolled well at the end?
I’m surprised the bioficers don’t make flesh bodies and sell them to the scourge as hosts that would be cool lore. At first I didn’t like the ship designs but as I learn more and keep seeing them they have been growing on me to the point where I’m now ordering a starter set. They remind me of the alien rifle that shoots lightning from district 9 movie.
@dmr7356 I also had my reservations, but the spare, angular design of Bioficer ships has grown on me, too. It makes sense for a race where a lot of the usual space for a crew to sleep, eat, relax, etc, simply wouldn't be needed.
looking forward to playing this, thanks
@@Janisurai Cool! I've had a lot of fun with it. 🙂
Mythic battles is a good game if you can overcome the rules wording, some flawed maps, the setup time, the space taken by the boxes, some broken characters, scenario mode… So for me it’s not 🤣
@federik21 Once you've got the rules worked-out, it's a great game IMHO. I shall be posting a play-through soon. That might be useful...?
What game are those infantry miniatures from?
@@epicd6794 Striketeam Commander - which will be on Kickstarter later this year. A preview is already up.
I preordered the Company of Heroes game years ago and never got my copy. I’m still pretty mad about it.
@@jonathanbirkeland1085 Ouch. I assume you've done all the chasing up with Bad Crow? Did they not help?
Warcry is a great game
@@goresk8869 It's on my list of games I'd like to play.
Ambush is awesome!! 🎲🎲
It is a lot of fun! Have you seen the new Abyssal models?
@@The.Game.Cave. Not in person yet.
@aslskfan1 I've only seen images - but they do look cool!
Great video! Anybody knows the name of the "more toys" tower at 0:48? Thanks!
It's a 3d print. It's referred to as either 'battle tower' or 'ruined tower' for Lord of the Rings. Various companies sell this print. 🙂
thanks
One hour wargame should also involve being able to pay for the game with an hours wage.
I love fast wargames. One hour Wargames and One Hour Skirmish Wargames are very versatile as long as you don’t mind being creative. Brutality Skirmish Wargame is great for a balanced experience with small footprint. Relicblade is 2’ table and usually wraps up in under an hour for me. And lately I’ve been dabbling with Mike Hutchinson’s Hobgoblin for larger battles that still play lightning quick.
@kirkmathes3525 I've looked at Relicblade a few times. I like the aesthetic and the RPG elements.
Then there is One Hour Wargames by Neil Thomas. Covers all time periods (and easily adaptable to more as I've written Kaiju, Zombies and other variants), uses only 6 units per side, easy to teach and games can take place in as little 20 minutes. The rules seem almost too easy but gives a very satisfying gaming experience.
@@willtijerina5149 This sounds intriguing 🤔
I thought you would mention One-Hour Skirmish Wargames by John Lambshead. The card driven mechanics are quite different from other wargames. Nice video.
@landsknecht1525 I've seen this, but never played. How do the card mechanics work?
@The.Game.Cave. it is a diceless game, you draw cards from a regular 52 card deck for the randomizer.
A rather obscure wargame is ZynVaded! Takes about an hour, with only 3 models each side, and they're 1:1 scale! The meta is that alien invaders had BAD info, and didn't realize how huge earthlings actually were. It's adorable and super easy and fast to play!
@@patriciabenjamin7056 That sounds hilarious!
Great list! I'd love to see more videos like this, showcasing miniature games that can be played under an hour on a smaller table footprint (2'x2' or smaller). There's plenty of them out there and they deserve more love than they're getting! <3
@@mirankramar3111 I will have a think about that. Thanks! 🙂
Great video and well produced!
I love the models they are so beautifully designed to look like a weird machine insect hybrid. Great fade in and out of the music in the video btw
Great video, i want to play Battletech, looks fun
@stevewintle8669 It is a lot of fun - and the player-base has increased quite a bit in recent years.
I've played Battletech since the 90s. It's basically the same game. It's Alpha Strike I'd like to learn to play
The Battletech Alpha Strike boxed set is one of the best boxed sets ever produced for any game. Right out of the box you really do get everything you need to play the game. I've played Battletech since it was called Battledroids and this is the best single boxed set they've ever produced.
@@willtijerina5149 I agree that it's a great box. The models are so much fun to paint - you never get bored, as you can paint each one differently if you like. The cardboard buildings are also really nice.
Honestly, for me is best of the best wargame Infinity, then Malifaux and Warcrow.
@quinterx I've not tried Warcrow, but love the look of the models. How does it play?
@@The.Game.Cave. for me it's absolutely best of everything from Corvus Belli in fantasy game. From stunning models, for easy to learn rules....
@quinterx I may have to check it out. The orcs do look stunning.
@@The.Game.Cave. They are :) and they are made by really great material with stunning details.
@@The.Game.Cave. i forgotten mentioned everything is very intuitive, which makes the game very enjoyable, and you play in squad with leader or separé...rulebook is free for download :)
Great list!
War games or leave job? This video means I no longer have to choose.
We have some games we might play at the end of a night (I.e. a big two to three hour board game and a lighter 30 minute one to relax and unwind) Harmonies Ready set bet Tiny towns Are all good examples of smaller games to unwind with after some tense heavy boardgaming
Great to see you bringing the models to life !!! Really appreciate the painting tips !
@@gb037424 Thanks 😊 They are such nice models to paint.
Hey Carl, just did a review on this and linked your video as a great way to learn to play. You did a great job here, and as the rule book is rather lacking, I hope more people find this video!
