These are still good for even places that get cold. Like the midwest... we experience -30 with windchill for sometimes 2-4 weeks subzero temps. It works great in hot regions, as you face it the other way and depending on how you construct your walls, you can easily have an R30-R60 on your berm wall. Which is more than conventional buildings use, even for their ceilings..

Some areas don't have codes. We just bought property in a small town with ZERO restrictions. Kinda wild. Love it!

Also, you can omit building codes by hiring both an architect and a structural engineer, to verify the strength in highly custom solutions.

Seth Johnson No. It's much different. These tires take the place of other building materials, many of which are not sustainable or demand greater resources both economically and environmentally. The tires have already been manufactured and have exhausted their usefulness except in an application such as this where they are used for structure rather than simply being stored. Additionally, they are sealed into walls rather than just sitting in huge stacks that breed mosquitos and, if they catch fire, will smolder for weeks polluting the air.

@@sethjohnson4378 After 20,000 miles the tires have off-gassed as much as they will; the tires aren't hurting anything at this point AND they don't just go in landfills in the US, they get burned which is badd-badd for air quality, so this is a very good thing.. when they're buried they cannot off-gas or pollute anything and they are providing your home with climate control via convection circulation, perfect humidity, what with the plants and watering system. Anyway, there they are," so I decided what the heck" and watched one, and as Mike explained things, or others giving tours, I completely understood why they're even called Earthships in the 1st place - just like if you were on a ship to make a trek across the ocean, scuse me, voyage, you would pack in everything that you need to make it across the ocean, right? Earthships do that reusing and up-cycling garbage is 1 way to help the planet and Mike is not even a big tree hugging ecological do gooder per se, BUT he IS a pragmatic individual, in fact using logic and practicality is practically a mantra for him. The newer homes are even beginning to look a bit more traditional by still having the same elements because what works works and if you change it very much or very it slightly it wont-work a mean your body is a vessel to you can't put your lungs in your thigh, right? And your brain won't work if it's divided in your feet... Study up, you'll be amazed. I am totally on board now. I have a small space to build within the city and I am going to use as many of his ideas and systems as I possibly can to live off grid in a cottage in a large back yard as stealthily as I can, After I dig a basement installing convection tube, screen that in, waterproof it all, reinforce the ceiling and then get a kit shed that I'll build on top and unconventionally "out"-sulate and waterproof and then begin to build-up a berm around it back in the trees were nobody will notice and call the city on me or my landlord, later building a greenhouse front. The city only lets you build a 100 ft² with no permit needed. Baby steps. Later I can build in water catchment having already dug in and buried the cisterns. Then I will have almost 200 ft² and they just won't ever know about the basement. I can run electricity out to my house via extra long extension cord but then I can begin to get solar installed. I can also buy food grade hose to transport water in to my house. As for bathing, I can do it in the landlord's house or heat up water on the stove like the pioneers did - won't hurt my feelings, I get clean just the same! The only concern I have and I wonder if I can get directly ahold of Mike is will these principles in will air flow work in a triangular building I would have due South exposure year round if I was in the corner of the yard hidden from nosy neighbors....

Nobody is claiming that the ideas in an earthship are original or are the only choice moving forward. Actually a lot of the time they say that this is nowhere near close to where we could or even need to be, but that this is a good stepping point. The thing that I like about earthships is that the way you generate power into them is entirely up to you. A lot of them utilize solar power, and even wind power. So it's easy to say that you could just hook up a hydroelectric generator up to it if you live on or near a stream. I intend to build one of my own some day as well, and I'm really eager to learn and utilize all kinds of these great ideas to provide a sustainable healthy way of life.

Yeah Dude ! Everyone gets a cloudy day or even a week , that's why there are a wind turbine for steady eddy and a gas generator if ya just gotta have more now ! But still , they are off the grid that is destroying the very earth we live on .How much more nuclear waste should we EVER allow ? How much longer do we have to look at smoke from coal fired electrical facilities ? Why look at this Earthship with such distain ? Maintenance intensive ? Solar panels ? There are even Solar panels being developed for parking lots and play grounds and Solar Roadways ! It creates more jobs or , better , it replaces a good guy or gal doing the 8-5 hustle to just put bread on the table and these bring the store into your home ! Geeze ..there's lots more . ...
