How to supervise postgraduate students in ethical use of generative artificial intelligence
Generative AI is here to stay. Our higher degree students need guidance on how to engage with it. In this video I'll offer some strategies and examples of how to go about this. I welcome comments from other HDR supervisors.
Here's the paper I mention in the video:
Caillaud, E., & Skec, S. (2024). SUPERVISION OF DESIGN PHD STUDENTS IN AN ERA OF GENERATIVE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. In DS 131: Proceedings of the International Conference on Engineering and Product Design Education (E&PDE 2024) (pp. 420-425).

Scenarios to practice effective communication with postgraduate students
Просмотров 875 месяцев назад
Eight scenarios included. I made this resource so that supervisors of postgraduate students can see examples of communication with students via an online platform. Some of these examples offer options on effective communication, others are not effective - or may not strengthen a positive relationship with students. I use closed feedback communication, curious questions, 'I wonder', timeline sig...

Six year old with ketotic hypoglycemia gets gastro virus - lived experience
Просмотров 1328 месяцев назад
In this video I share issues that parents and children experience while living with ketotic hypoglycemia. I was surprised as a parent that I could not find youtube videos from other parents or children to guide me about what to expect, things to look for, troubleshooting, or tips to get through viral episodes. So I made this video to help others who are facing similar such situations. My six ye...
Perplexity and Elicit - How to use generative artificial intelligence in your literature review
Просмотров 52510 месяцев назад
In this film I'll explore Perplexity versus Elicit for identifying research. I'll demonstrate the tools. USER FRIENDLY: Perplexity AI and Elicit excellent. ACCURACY: Perplexity AI is pretty good but not great at identifying ALL of the right/best/most cited literature. Elicit is not as reliable as Perplexity. ARTICLE SUMMARIES: Perplexity AI is good. Elicit is good. They both make mistakes. They...
How to conduct thematic analysis: qualitative research method
Просмотров 7010 месяцев назад
Thematic analysis is the most commonly used qualitative research approach in medicine and health sciences. I recommend Braun and Clarke's approach plus I suggest researchers look for a central underpinning theme through which the others can be understood. I'd be interested to know in the comments what you think about proposed step 5.5. Thanks folks
A systematic review of critical reflection and insight in postgraduate medical education.

Can you teach insight? This systematic literature review of 75 texts suggests you can teach someone to reflect, and you can possibly achieve three states of reflection. But we did not find evidence that you can teach someone insight. Check out the paper: Price N, Jowsey T, Weller J. How to promote student learning in a lecture: tips and tricks

In this video I'll provide a bunch of approaches you can draw on to maximise student learning. They can be applied to any tertiary education subject material. I'm not going to bore you with all the literature supporting these tricks (if you want to know that just ask generative AI). Instead, I'll cut to the proverbial chase: what works and how to do it. Importantly, these tips do not require ad...

Cultural Safety/Competency Simulation Scenario

This short film concerns a conversation between a clinical supervisor (female) and clinical student (male). It is meant as a resource to spark conversation about how we can assess cultural safety/competency. This is an example of poor cultural competency by the supervisor. Why is it poor? - The supervisor says that the patient is unlikely to understand the terms used in the consent form, so to ...

Very good video and insights. Actually, I am developing a paper with narrative review but reviewers are not convinced. What should be highlighted to strengthen the paper knowing that it is mainly about summarizing 20 years of literature, and expanding future research. Should I strengthen the critical lens (or create one), or develop more the scope (to whom we address the research), or something else. Thank you for your feedback and expertise

It sounds like you've spotted something that could have been done better. I have no means of providing this feedback directly to the nurse. However, given that many parents watch this video to learn what to expect, I wonder if you would like to explain in plain language the issue and offer parents some useful curious questions that we could ask clinicians to be reassured that they are undertaking the procedure correctly? Thanks

Regarding the use of different stickers for different octaves, that is confusing and distracting. It also is not aesthetic. It's just as easy to look at the size of the tongue. The bigger the tongue the lower the notes. The smaller the tongue the higher the note Play you are right the first time. It is an octave. Not a note. It is the same note, different octaves!

hi folks, since making this film I've realised two things: I should have specified that Chat-GPT 3.5 isn't great at providing references to literature but 4.0 is. And I've done a fair bit of further testing of Elicit - it has let me down too many times to have confidence that it will bring up the right literature. Google Scholar does a better job. Cheers.
