Traveling the world and telling stories.
In Paris with the Fujifilm XH2s - Rolling Shutter Test and Commentary
I wanted to do a real world test of the readout speed on the FujiFilm XH2s, and I figured emulating an old school super 8 travel film while on a layover in Paris would be as good a test as any. The majority of this sequence was shot with the Fuji 18-120 Power Zoom, entirely handheld and with IBIS turned off.

Smedley Butler and the Anatomy of an American Contradiction
Просмотров 141Год назад
Looking into Smedley Butler's notes and correspondence throughout his decades of military service, a proverbial journey can be charted of his experiences and shifting temperament, and pivotal moments can be construed that led to Smedley Butler’s rather radical change of heart. The belief that “War is a Racket,” began to be formulated from his military beginnings in Cuba, and was finally voiced ...
Sunset on the Brooklyn Bridge - Postcard from NYC

This is New York City. It is one of the most diverse places on earth and it has given millions of the worlds tired and weary a home, and those millions have made it into the home that millions come to visit every year. It is recklessly optimistic, and hopeful beyond words. But look at some of the terrible things that transpire here, and you can quickly lose sight of all those humanity’s. Atop t...

After All My Searching. It's a bit lonely out there, but, mostly worthwhile. In this video I take you on a journey through the highs and lows of my own solo travels. It can get lonely out there, but It is also so frequently lovely. Worthwhile for me, but nights spent in cold, wet, tents alone, and long drives in uncomfortable used cars can be a bit weary. If taken into account before hand, thes...
Slavery and the Apologetics of the Founding Fathers

Slavery and the apologetics of the founding fathers. In this film I take a troubling journey into the history of these apparently United States of America, and explore how all the founding fathers explained away one of the largest elephants in the nation's proverbial closet. Our 'Founding Father's' had a lot on their plate, but they all fell short, and most of them fell particularly and purpose...

Some philosophical thoughts on science, the world, and a perception of god. A Walk through Chicago. I got to really test out the weather sealing on the X-T4, XF 16-80mm R OIS WR, and XF 27mm R WR which, as you can tell from the video and the fact that I still have a perfectly functioning camera, it worked splendidly. Inside My Head - A Journey Around The Hemispheres - Alabama to Istanbul

Welcome to my mind, please leave your shoes at the door and make yourself at home. Before I left for my grand adventure, I decided to film myself along the journey, so I could see how my thoughts and character progressed. So I wrote and filmed a little honest segment at home, left the camera rolling at all the seemingly important moments during the voyage, and kept the ending totally up to the ...
An Evening in Istanbul - Postcard from Turkey
Просмотров 2476 лет назад
Postcard from Istanbul. A short little film I shot over an evening, while roaming around Istanbul Turkey with some friends. Rain had plagued our first month in Istanbul, and my friend and I were beginning to feel quite weary and homesick of the cold and wet. Eventually, though, after walking around with a friend we made over Google Translate, and catching the ferry back to the Anatolian side of...

A little low light test of the Panasonic UX-180 all in very dim available light. Mostly shot around 12db of gain. Shot in Picture Profile 6, cinelike D, with color matrix set to 'stillike' A small amount of de-noise added in post, and a small amount of sharpening added to compensate.

HitFilm 2 Express Color Correction Test
Also I’ve always loved how Fuji can look modern yet vintage at the same time. This looks like your great grandkids found these clips from an old drive and uploaded it to this channel
How were the French? I heard they’re terrible?
No digital or film camera has the built in IBIS to test rolling shutter without some type of gimbal or at least a fixed pan head. The solution for you is something like a DJI Osmo and doing zoom in post. Handheld will always be amateur hour.
@nativestrong7253 Maybe I just don't understand what you are saying or how it pertains to this video, but it seems like you don't understand what rolling shutter or, for that matter, IBIS, is? The solution I'm looking for for liking the handheld look is to not like the handheld look? Not even to mention the thousands of films, documentaries, TV shows, etc. that have all used handheld cameras to great success - are all those ostensibly professional productions also 'amateur hour'?
i farted
Absolutely incredible. You have a wonderful personality and amazing taste! I love all of what you have chosen to capture and share, not to mention how. Happy that I have more videos to watch. Thanks for being you! Also, if it’s not too personal, what company do you work for doing installations and how do you think you landed the job? Sounds like a decent gig to support me while I build the life I want and still have a little bit of the lifestyle that I have so often dreamed about.
beautiful video, cheers!
Love the mellow pacing. Subbed!
really happy to hear it connected with you! Planning to string together a couple more stories like this one from other trips I've taken since :)
What camera do you use?
Hey Aya! This was filmed on my Fujifilm X-T4 with a 16-80mm f/4 and a 23mm f/2 lens :)
I second the other comment on this video. Was super pleased with that scene at the beginning, felt like something from a documentary. What camera did you use to record that?
Happy to have achieved the feeling I was going for! I filmed it on my Fujifilm X-T4 with a 16-80mm f/4 and a 23mm f/2 lens and graded it with Filmconvert Nitrate in Premiere Pro :)
Hi. I just finished watching this video and I just wanted to say your film making and your photography is amazing I love it, the best thing about this video and what I noticed is your usage of natural sounds u didn't add any music and that is what I love about this video, because when u use music it adds all of these different emotions and it pulls you away from the content to your own feelings so you stop enjoying the film. Keep doing what you do and I hope you have a good day.
Thank you so much! I like being contrarian and resist the urge to put lo-fi hip hop under every second of the video haha. I love just having the background layer of natural sounds. As you said very insightfully, I think meaningless background music can distract you from your own feelings and from the immersion in the place and time documented! :)
Beautiful!

How do you set to Picture Profile 6? Got mateix on still-like. Gamma mode on cine-like d. Not sure what picture profile 6 is at
Thank u for reading what was actually said, rather than making excuses!
Nice presentation. Feel free to check out my series on contax T2
these quotes are fantastic. can you do one on the red skins program run through the us marshalls office and the book burning which tried to remove it from history?
thanks for watching!! That would definitely be an interesting one! Just fished several months of research on Smedley Butler and American imperialism in the early 20th century and have about 8,000 really good words on it. That's probably going to be my next film, but we'll see what's after that!
Awesome video! Missing new york and this video came up and made my day. Cheers!
it's truly a magical place, i hope to return soon too! very happy both the algorithm and i could add some light to your day :)
11:47 - NOTE: Upon further investigation, most historians think David Walker actually died of Tuberculosis shortly after the publication of his appeal. The book where I got the primary source, from my university library, simply said he 'disappeared' and I didn't fact check thoroughly enough -
At least you corrected. Not everyone does.
Well done Matthew! -MM
Thanks man!!
Nice work. Nice shots. Nice music. 👍👍

Thanks!! I love putting these little atmospheric sequences together, so I'm happy you enjoyed it :)
Great Video 👍
Thanks for watching!!
Awesome n very interesting trurh..i believe...check out 432 the drop radio..utube..Prestor John n the dragon
Curious as to your matrix settings , pedestal and low gain setup because I’m seeing noise in some of my darker shots.
Game of thrones sequel give us a version of prester john 😆
Good content man. I had heard prester John mentioned in a separate podcast and was intrigued. I have looked all over Google and RUclips researching prester john. You probably have the best video at explaining the myth of prester john to those of us that don't really know anything about it. Please keep pushing content like this, it's good stuff.
Hey, thanks a lot! I was in the same place, looking for a good video on Prester John and not being able to find one, so I figured I'd make one myself!! I've got a couple topics in mind that haven't already been covered a thousand times by bigger channels that I'm slowly working towards making!
Q U I R K S A N D F E A T U R E S very gud video sir
i appreciate this test you did here. not very good in low light like most camcorders but great to see it try.
Amazing work with the t3i. Loved the soundtrack too
Thanks dude! It's not to difficult to make this place look great, even with old faithful. The Call to prayer I recorded while at Hagia Sophia, and the ambient stuff is good ol' Lowercase Noises.
Dude ... this is awesome!! This is shot so well! And those colors! Great job Matt!
Thanks man! The color is courtesy of the Canon, Film Convert, and a tiny bit of reds taken out of the lows via curves.
And of course most importantly the lovely bit of sunlight we got while on the boat
Matthew Neiman looks so good man. Love the audio stuff too. How did you capture?
@@tylerlovelady590 the stuff I got was recorded with my DR-40. But I didn't get near enough the day off, so I had to use folly from the internet to fill in the gaps (like the birds, water, and boat sounds).
Thanks for posting something on the UX-180 not shot at 12 noon. Finally, something that shows me some artistic capabilities of the camera. :)
I love this!
Great song choice! I love Switchfoot!
The open stillness of that place looks eerily comforting, if that makes any sense at all. Well done.
If only this lens had image stabilization
+Matthew Dessner use Glidecam/ cheap stabilizer...hey...handheld is art too..!.. :D
image settings?
This was shot with sharpness and contrast all the way down, saturation at -2, and some bad color grade in post since when I made this I didn't really know how to make a color correction look good. But hoped that helped. I now shoot in cinestyle as that gives just a bit more dynamic range to help the camera out. It's harder to manage however as it's a log profile, and will need color correction in post.
Good video. Who sings this song?
It is "Say it like you mean it" by "Switchfoot" off their newest album "Fading West"
