Sony WM-GX90 Walkman | wonderful but sad story | inside look | review
Here is my take on Sony WM-GX90 WALKMAN. This radio cassette corder is very sort after because of the design and functionality. It has a clock, timer for radio recording, repeat function, digital display as well as inline remote control headphones. Sadly, someone got inside it before me and damaged it beyond my capabilities to repair. Enjoy.

    Yeah it needs a service. Use to repair all this stuff back in the day. Needs recapping and the belts might need replacing and you might find some gears had dry oil on them or cracked. That’s why I say it needs a service. Repaired all this stuff before. I do electronics and will need the head realigned and wow and flutter sorted out too.

    I like the victorinox cases, I've had the large champ one since 2008 and it's still pristine (as is the knife). The only problem I have with the mini champ one is the fact that it doesn't double as a keyring, so I'll be looking for one that you can put the mini in but is also a keyring. • @HomBKaviani
      @HomBKaviani Месяц назад

      @DennisReyesCaballero Hi, Thanks for visiting my channel and your question. Sadly, the beep is part of the chip programme. About rolling tape, these are susceptible to go out of sync while power stops during playback. The door won't even open when this happens. My advice is to open the back and manually force stop the mechanism until the head releases the tape by rolling the capstan. Hopefully, the mechanism goes back to sync, if not, let me know. Take care and cheers for now.

    Thanks a lot, I followed this and was able to restore and keep using the JBL Creature. However, I wasn't super happy with the sound quality of the new speakers, so I thought to try to restore the old ones, mostly for fun. And it worked pretty good, with some caveats. You need basically: a 3D printer, 0,6 mm EVA foam sheet, exacto knife, some glue, and a soldering iron. First, you need to remove carefully the deteriorated foam with any thin tool or even a toothpick. There are 2 foam rings, the external one surronding the metal center, and then another joining the central coil to the middle of the speaker encasement. Remove both. You'll see now two wires coming from the central coil cylinder to the terminals. You need first to unsolder them from the terminal, using a thin tip. Then, they cross the encasement through a couple of small cuts on it; and they are filled with glue. You need to remove the glue, which can be a bit difficult; I used a sharp cutter (you'll damage the blade so you can use an old one) and also a Dremel with a very thin drilling bit (this makes it easier). Do not cut the wires instead! You'll have problems if you do that, believe me. Once you free the wires, you'll be able to extract the central coil cylinder. Take care not to deform it so it keeps a perfect round shape. Clean carefully any remains of foam and glue on the encasement, I used acetone and cotton swabs for that. You need also to clean the coil cylinder as well, but using acetone here is dangerous (you'll likely remove the coil varnish), so I used the exacto knife very carefully to remove the remains of foam and sticky glue. It doesn't need to be perfect, just remove as much as you can without risk. To manipulate the coil cylinder without deforming it I 3D-printed a cylindrical piece that fits perfectly into the coil (but not all the way; the metal cap is easily deformed as well). Then, to build the new foam rings, I 3D-printed molds for both foam rings, so I can get the bumpy thorus shape. I used these molds to shape a couple of EVA foam pieces using a heat gun. Then you need to cut those pieces so they get the appropriate circular shape and also the central hole for the central coil cylinder. Once you have both foam rings, put the coil cylinder through them so both rings are at the appropriate height, which you can easily see because you will have still the mark of the original glue that held the original foam rings. Apply glue carefully to keep the new rings in place. Once it dries, you are ready to put back the coil cylinder into the encasement. Apply glue (not an instant one) to the surfaces of the encasement that will have contact with the foam rings; and also to the cuts for the wires. Introduce carefully the cylinder with the foam rings into the encasement, ensuring it is perfectly centered with the magnet. The wires also need to be inserted into the encasement cuts (beware of polarity; positive terminal and wire are painted in red) and soldered back to the terminal. Do not stretch out them, do must not be tense or the coil won't be able to vibrate. For the innermost ring, you may need to use a toothpick or similar to press it against the glue, as the encasement is partially closed there. Let everything dry, and then you can put back the speaker into the satellite housing. It's a bit complicated I know: this is just in case you want to try and entertain yourself. For me, one of the satellites now sound a bit lower than the other. I suspect it is because for that one, I just cut the wires, which complicate everything (and you still need to free them from the encasement then solder them back togheter, so no gain doing that). That made the entire operation of putting back the coil into the encasement difficult, and I think possibly something is too tight and the coil cannot vibrate as freely as it should (or maybe the resoldered wires doesn't work so well). Probably I'll try to remade it, in the meantime I just adjust the balance. But the other one is sounding pretty awesome to me. Can't tell how much this will last, but I'm happy with the result so far.
