Great reaction, thanks! I see you had a ton of great info right in the chat. Mr. Hiroaki Nakamoto (Suzuka's father) played the bass in the high school punk band Hooligans. They even released an album in 1990 (not in the 70's, haha...). He had to leave his music career and return to Hiroshima to take over his family's construction business. 🤘🦊

Great reaction again. 'Road of Resistance' is a very positive song, it isn't the usual "resist the machine or the system etc" that we might expect from the title. It is about forging your own road even where a road doesn't already exist, not necessarily going the easy way or following the path already made by somebody else, so if the way you want to go has never been trodden you may have to get past the resistance of the undergrowth, obstacles, hurdles and things blocking your way etc to find your own way. It could easily be used to describe BABYMETAL's own story - they could have followed the well trodden path of J-Pop and been very successful, but they chose to go with Metal ... but again they didn't just follow the same old format of every other metal band, they have done it their own way and it hasn't always been an easy route to follow.🦊🤘

Great reaction. 'Karate' was the lead single for their second album (2016). It is about fighting adversity, when life knocks you down and everything seems too hard so you're hurt and crying, its about standing up and fighting on, helping each other through the hard times. They used karate to illustrate this because as a Japanese martial art it reflects their culture - that was a very important thing for them as well. As with a lot of their songs it is also about always moving forwards. The figures in white were the girls all along and they were conjuring up their own inner demons to fight against. They beat the first, the second knocked them down but they got up to eventually defeat themselves (did you notice the reflections of each of the girls in their own eyes when the masks shattered and it was revealed as them? Not many people spot that). They did watch a lot of martial arts movies to get ideas for the choreo as they wanted it to look as authentic as possible (but they are not martial artists). Moa catching the fly was a nod to Mr Miyagi in The Karate Kid. Mr Miyagi may have used chop sticks (and it may have taken him two or three films before he caught one), Moa caught her fly with her eyes closed - first time .... and she let it go. We all know Moa wouldn't hurt a fly. This song and video won 2 awards. "Best Metal Video in MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2016" and "Best Metal Song in 6th Annual Loudwire Music Awards".

"Karate" is on their poppier side (in my opinion). But that main riff comes out from nowhere and hits you like a bus. 😁 This music video is one of their best (if not the best: multiple award winning, etc.) and it pretty much explains the lyrics, which are about resilience and endurance. Su-metal mentioned in an interview that karate perfectly represents this metaphor because it's the only martial art without "ukemi" (the techniques used in many martial arts to fall "properly"). 🤘🦊

This is probably the most important moment in their entire history, being their first big stage outside Japan and performing in front of one of the most potentially hostile audiences. But the result is crystal clear: walking off the stage while the crowd was chanting for more can be considered an epic win. The members are very aware of all this and even Su-metal has mentioned this in interviews. They also sold more merch than any other band that weekend (including Iron Maiden, Metallica, Anthrax, Dream Theater, Slayer...). Some call this "the Sonisphere miracle" but it's not. It's all about taking what you do seriously and blending genres and different styles with respect. Yui's "incident" with her tutu showcases their level of professionalism. I wouldn't compare them to your daughters or nieces performing at school, they already were super professional performers at the time (they were 16 and 15 here, by the way). And yes, it's crazy if you think about it. 🤘🦊

Great reaction again - and as you were told, this was a very special occasion - their first time in the UK, their first major event outside of Japan and their first real metal festival. Su was 16, Yui and Moa had just celebrated their 15th birthdays (Moa's was the day before). They were virtually unknown, could speak hardly a word of English and just a couple of months earlier they had been moved to play on the main stage (they were originally booked to play a small side stage or tent with maybe two thousand people). BABYMETAL were aware of the possibility/threats of things being thrown. Some small minded idiots who had seen 30 seconds of the 'Gimme Chocolate' video and (mistakenly) made up their minds BABYMETAL must be some sort of money making gimmick band weren't happy that they were playing at Sonisphere, they were even more upset to hear they would be on the main stage and they posted threats on social media of bottles being thrown and booing them off stage, but the vast majority of the people there didn't have a clue who they were. From back stage the girls couldn't see the crowd and were more worried nobody had come to see them and what they should do if there was nobody there - they walked on stage to see a sea of puzzled faces - hairy, tattooed metalheads (the typical UK crowd) wondering why three little Japanese girls in red tutus were on stage at one of the biggest metal festivals. I believe Su has said that as they walked on and saw all the puzzled faces she thought to herself "This will be fun. Let's knock it out of the park." They had about 25 minutes, just 5 songs, to try to impress this crowd. After they played their merch outsold all the other bands playing that weekend (including Metallica, Iron Maiden, Anthrax, Slayer, Avenged 7Fold and more). They have spoken in interviews (even recently) about how they consider this one of their biggest milestones and it being the moment they felt accepted by the metal community and really began to believe their music could break the language and other barriers. Su-metal has described how the sea of puzzled faces they saw as they walked on stage changed to smiles as their set went on and how it went from just the front few rows jumping and joining in and looked like a wave running back through the crowd from front to back as more and more people followed suit. I hope Knotfest is as successful for them.

Nice one, thanks! "IDZ" is one of my personal favorites... I'm into power metal after all... It also has a great message against bullying. It was their second song according to live performances, premiering live in July 2011 but it was released officially way later (in January 2013). Maybe because this is basically a straight power metal song and they had zero intention on getting pigeonholed in one genre. They rarely perform it live today. I traveled 650 km each way just for the possibility that they did. It was totally worth it. 😁 🤘🦊

IDZ (Bullying, No More, For Ever/Absolutely) is right up among my own favourite songs and it was the second song they ever played live, so one of the earliest things they did ... the lyrics are deep and meaningful (something they were accused of never having by the people who called them "bubblegum pop"). Yes of course Yui and Moa were playing the guitars in the video😇🤫 ... every bit as much as Babybones were playing theirs.🦴🎸🎸🦴☠🤘 The hairy guy in the MV was representing the spirit of metal. He was being bullied, having his hair cut and guitar smashed by the mainstream pop and hip hop guys (as was pretty much the case figuratively in Japan around that time) until he saw the "Stand Up Metal" message painted on the rock ... and was revealed as a Babybone guitarist at the end.☠🎸 They use IDZ mainly for encores now - they played it on the last date of the US tour and again on the last date of the European tour last year.🤘🦊 I'm looking forward to seeing your reaction to a live performance now.
