Hey y'all,
On this channel I do readings of short stories, novels, essays etc. from authors whose work I like.
Forewarning: These readings are not professional. I am not perfect in my reads. In some of the texts, I have taken the liberty of substituting certain words for others. I try to not do this but have done it occasionally. The consensus is to not do that and I have tried to refrain posting works with slurs in them so I do not compromise the text. If this is something one has a problem with, I suggest people seek the work elsewhere.
Again, this is a novice reading channel and it's mostly for fun and to share the work of authors whom I love. A big portion of this channel is reading the works of Richard Yates. Not to sound fanatical but I do admire his works and hope sharing them will help elongate his legacy. He's just that good, y'all. Give him a try. -- All this coming from a fan.
Thanks for stopping by!
XOXO :)

A Tragic Honesty: The Life and Work of Richard Yates by Blake Bailey Pre-Reading
I've noted Vidal's apartment location on google maps
Yeah, me too! Out of curiosity today I looked up Merrywood, Edgewater, Piazza Origo, La Rondinaia, and the Hollywood Address. He's lived all over and it's pretty incredible. Those historic houses are gorgeous--all the houses are gorgeous! What a life!
Awww lucky I want to see
Greatest american writer
Two of my favorite men. Thanks.
No problem!
YOU'RE NOT SKILLED ENOUGH TO BE A READER.
I think only him honest
Prokosch’s last published book “Voices: a Memoir” was fiction, not a memoir at all. I’m surprised Gore Vidal was fooled by this literary hoax.
I was reading a little bio of the man after I read this and apparently he seemed to be a total fake? I'm pretty ignorant of his works and I thought Gore was talking about how the "memoir" was fabricated but maybe he just was leaning into Prokosch's falsity. I don't know. Still haven't read the great fictional "memoir" of Prokosch. I'm sure it's an interesting read. It's interesting nonetheless.
Stumbled across this. Great essay and good reading. I miss Gore Vidal’s writing.
Please keep reading and uploading. I like hearing you react as you read! It feels human and authentic - I think these authors would appreciate that over the priggish comments you refer to here...
Thanks👍👍
Thank you!
I liked the video.
One of my favorite books
0:00-0:45 introduction to piece 0:46- 44:58 story
In my little book I read these from, they have these intros to the stories that are about to be read. I debated about whether or not including them and I just went ahead and went for it. I appreciate you putting in timestamps for other people. Much obliged.
Thanks for this reading. I would say that in USA Barthes has been assimilated by reading him as if he were a US New Critic of the mid - 20th century. Whether such a reading is legitimate I wouldn't like to say.
No problem. It's been almost a year since this one and listening to it now it's a little rough. I've yet to read Barthes but would at least like to try "The Death of the Author" if I don't get to 'Mythologies' as a whole.
No need to explain yourself, you are awesome. Just do you, and thank you for doing so.
That's very sweet. Thank you very much.
Sorry Barb, audio problems rear their head no matter how prepared you think you are. I bought a new good quality mic that after working perfectly for a month just decided to make the loudest crackly pop every couple of minutes for like several days until it was just fine.
Edit: In a more enlightened answer, yeah, sometimes the mic makes crackling noises, sometimes it doesn't there's no rhyme or reason, just like you say. I just have to chance it and go forward. Although it's not nice to see other people experiencing it, it's nice to know I'm not alone in this!
Do not quite!
Thank you!❤
Thank you!!
Sorry you've been sick and all cooped up. It can really let the bad thoughts and feelings fester. Getting it off your chest like this is good, I at least like knowing how you're feeling and if it's been rough for you lately. Feel better soon!💕
I'll live. It's just fun to bitch. I think the germs ride on out with the bitch waves and it actually helps. Thanks, mang.
Hi, I'm always looking for something quiet and interesting to listen to. Keep up the great work and happy holidays!
Thank you very much! This one will take me time to get through but I will try to finish it accordingly. Happy Holidays! Thanks for stopping by!
Excellent 👍 Thank you
Is this the full book?
This is Chapters 1 & 2 of Part One of the book. The portions of the readings are listed in the descriptions. I have a complete playlist of the entire book available. ruclips.net/p/PL32e_7Qb5kp9YXFGCvlAZnayWPpcW5Hui
Stick to your day job dear - you're not good at this one.
It's always nice to hear your voice. Keep at it, especially if it makes you happy!
I am nor sure this is your calling, I do appreciate the selection but it seems like you are reading this for the very first time.
I am reading it for the first time. They're not professional and they're cold reads. And it was an exercise for me to get back into reading. I think that criticism is more than fair. I'm sorry if you were expecting a more seasoned reading. Hopefully someone else has uploaded one better suited to your needs. Thank you.
thank you for taking the time to respond. I just happened to be looking for these and I was too lazy to read them so I wanted to listen. I hope I did not sound unkind, but I think you have a nice selection and voice; perhaps it would be worth your time to re-record them again with the more read throughs and a little editing, There might be an audience. Happy holiday to you1 @@Pancakeshouse85
My favorite story by F Scott, thank you
You're very welcome! Thanks for stopping by. Have a lovely day.
I really enjoyed your reading of the text. I use audios when I need a little help keeping focused on assigned texts in my courses. I have only one suggestion; Read what you see. Words have meaning, therefore changing negroes to people changes the meaning the author was trying to convey.
Yeah, I don't feel comfortable changing the text as that wasn't the author's intent but I also don't feel comfortable reading the slurs. I don't want to disrespect the author and/or story and I don't want to be offensive. I can't seem to do one w/o the other. I appreciate the honest feedback and if it was helpful at all, I'm grateful. Thank you so much for commenting.
😂😂
man i missed the live stream
Good stuff as always
Hope you feel better Barb!
Thanks, man. I'll live. I just hate being sick!
Hey Barb. For what it's worth I don't feel you're toxic or dysfunctional. It's good to air out your grievances however you can like this. And you're right for feeling the way you do. I have a feeling what you ask of people, especially friends, is much less than you should be getting. If you want someone's validation or time you can get it from me. After all I think you're a great friend and person. I'm looking forward to 🍁Fall🍁too. :)
Thank you for bringing this wonderful work to life. Really appreciated the intro.
You're very welcome! There's more stories I haven't yet read but I'll get to them eventually. Thank you for listening!
