Bedtime Stories by Charles Simic As copied down in my Book Two on December 15, 1986 1. The great toy-maker made toy-judges. He wound them up to a screech. Then he made a toy-torturer. He made a toy-executioner. But he forgot to make toy-victims. There was just you and me And we were cold. And I had a bad couch. And you had one leg shorter than the other. 2. All the lost ones gathered To make a forest, Autumn And someone reporting a disappearance For every last one of them Has each twig, leaf, root, Described and then dimly outlined The old woman in crisp funereal silk. 3. When a tree falls in a forest And there’s no one around To hear the sound, the poor owls Have to do all the thinking They think so hard, they fall off Their perches and are eaten by ants. Who, as you know, all look like Little black riding hoods. 4. You’ve got something in your left eye It’s a step-ladder Very tiny. Very interesting. There’s a bucket, too, and a man. In white overalls. He’s got a brush! I make kiss-like noises To scare him off. 5. This must be that famous cottage Where the wolf swallowed grandma. Only now there’s a Chinese laundry on one side And a pool hall on the other. And if it isn’t, how come When they open its narrow door at night The light falls on all fours and crawls off. And behind it the pose of someone laughing, Someone crying herself to sleep?

Many of the videos featuring W D Ehrhart have comments disabled. I just wanted to respond to his statement that nothing he did in Vietnam is worthy of praise. I just wanted to tell him that his experiences, his actions were the components which created the person he has become: Wise, empathic, compassionate, and determined. His contributions are measured by his impact on the souls who read his poetry, who are among his audiences, and those he encounters through the course of his life.

The Braun poems he reads are among his best but he's not good at putting over their meaning. You need to see these poems on the page to realize how good some of them are. Look for The Shed in particular.

I lived through Diane in Massachusetts. We were lucky. Our house was on the top of a knoll a mile from town center. With a clear view from our hill I remember being stunned by the volume of water. About a quarter mile away what once was a three foot wide trickle of a drainage ditch had become a 70 yard wide river raging through heavily populated neighborhoods. It was an awesome sight to behold.
