O is for Outdoors
Добавлен 16 май 2010
This channel is all about outdoor life, be it wild camping, skiing, orienteering, paddle boarding, mountain biking and any other activity that gets me in the great outdoors.
Latitude Festival 2024
A small snapshot of Latitude Festival 2024. Highlight form me was Keane but Frank Turner, Kasabian and Nile Rodgers (and CHIC) were also great. Star of the smaller stages on the Climate Live stage was Emma Kieran whose voice is enchanting. There are way too many Acts and entertainment for one weekend so I shall definitely be back next year

A really nice event put on by Southern Navigators. Day two of the Army Inter-corps and SN Trophy event at Mytchett & Congo Stream. A great area and very complex in areas. Whilst I don't like to be critical I was very frustrated with controls 7 and 8 which were not visible from within the circle at all as you can see from the video. Had I approached control 8 on the northernmost track it would have been very visible. Looking at the routegadget I...

Ok I see in the answer to another person that you use routegadget. Is that track video directly importable into avidemux for editing?
Thx for sharing your run. I am just now trying to develop O videos. The biggest hurdle was finding a program that could merge the stupidly split GoPro video clips...so no I need to create and merge my O track into my headcam view...but it seems there are several ways to create the O route for import. Looks like quickroute makes a very large sidescreen panel...but I like the smaller insert that you have showing. What is that please? Thanks again.
Would be great to see how much you’re fitting in there
I’ll post a short video when I next use it. Last time I used it it wasn’t full. Had a chair, fire pit, wood and table in it.
Do you know any mtb trails near their perchance
Gps program?
I use a garmin to track my route and then upload it onto Routegadget
I was at the same event but ran a different course. Very enjoyable. You were chasing me towards the last control. Had a good run myself. Only one major mistake. Managed to make a large (3 min) mistake on your leg 6-7 where you went spot on. I must have just missed the control on the left, but assumed I missed it on the right and continued north on the path. Not sure how I managed to spend 3 minutes looking though. Great video, thanks for posting.
i mean, its a cool way to see what poundbury looks like at street level
#12 should be a water source or well symbol on the map, not a pit. We use that all the time. At the very least a wet pit.
“Not too happy” at 36:20 for #8? The symbol is broken rock wall or something like that from my limited understanding. The only other thing that mapmaker could’ve put would’ve been a ruin possibly. The control is in the correct place though. I suppose he could’ve put an earth bank but it’s not on the Earth bank. Perhaps you could include a small widget at the bottom of the screen for the line on the clue sheet for the current control you are navigating towards. A RUclips channel by Kiziev does that.
I was noticing as the video started, it seemed like the GPS was off by a lot. Especially when going to number two unless you are on an unmarked trail. I did notice that area looks really great for a lot of features. The green/areas for sparse, vegetation are interesting, because there are fewer trees than on some other videos from international events that they call Open forest lol! Good job from a fellow age grouper. I’m curious about something. At our events which are much smaller we do not have age grouping. So I finished an event in second place 18 minutes behind the 35-year-old track runner. I suggested they implement some sort of age grading similar to the way, runners have at 5K and 10K. What do you think of this? And do you have any events that utilize a process like that? Thanks.
Yes it was hard to link Video to GPS track. Green areas vary considerably and i think a lot is down to the mapper. There are some courses were it takes me a while to get used to the mapping. We have age category for bigger events and competitors can see where they are against the same age category. M21,M35,M40, M45etc. Colour coded courses are normally linked to those age categories. Black/Brown will be M21/M35/M40. Blue M45/50/60 Green 65/70/75 etc but in the smaller events they wont break it down by age category
Bad route to #12?
Struggled to find the straight small track.
A lot of unmapped MTB trails?
Yep😂😂
Really funny to see a forest where white (and sometimes even light green or green stripes...) is far more runnable than open yellow! Also interesting how the course planner totally disregarded the "avoid very sharp angles since that can lead following runners into the control". I'm assuming the clear cut towards the last control was shown in the PM?
Yes the cut was shown on the map in the start area but not the one I was running with. I forgot for a moment and thought I’d have to run around the green to the last control.
It has been part of Norwegian Course Planner's rule book since the very beginning (1950/60?) that control placements should avoid any element of chance, if at all possible. This means not having any placements which become far easier because a runner in front of you suddenly bends down to punch, in an otherwise non-descript area, or placements which are invisible from one direction and very visible from some others, when this cannot be seen form the map (i.e. "under cliff" is obviously easier to spot from below than from above.)
Kind of boring with almost zero contour details and very good visibility almost everywhere, but still a nice run!
It was nice to get to a. Are where you can actually run. It was definitely a day for bearings.
Many thanks Jon, very helpful and instructional!
Glad you enjoyed it. A few weeks until there is another event near me.
Smashing event albeit seeing "Beware - Bayonet Training Area" signs was a tad unnerving! 😀
Yes it was! I was tempted to use that as the RUclips image.
I miss this school left in 03
Enjoyed watching your videos...the NZ one too. However if I was running in this one, I would have a discussion with the map maker about some egregious errors. They made complete confidence circles over critical bits of info...particularly the opening in the tall fence at its southeast end by #3...I might’ve taken the route to the north end initially not realizing there was no fence by the building.
Man...the hiccup going to 18! I have not seen you use a compass at all in the first hour, it it’s an invaluable tool that would have shown you your Navigation error in going west up the reentrant back to 13 (which had the very obvious earth bank excavations) vs East up the one at 18...alternatively a sunny day like that would let you use your shadow as a sundial if you can approximate the time...
Also...when showing the map...it would be interesting to know what your map makers use for legend items...I am not sure I know what purple hashes are between 2&3"...but wow...that stuff you had to clamber thru at 12:00 was whacked...was it deep swamp with briars and rocks? It looked like you and the other guy were really struggling with that vegetation.
Hiya. Watching head cam O is neat. Thanks and liked. I need to get my cam mounted. Anyway...I was watching your run, and was curious as to why you stopped for a minute twice on the way to #1 in obviously nowhere near the area the control was located. It didn’t seem like you were resting, but more like you thought you were already close. What’s interesting about your map is the maker has that growth that’s 3 feet tall shown as dense non runnable forest...when in our area we just call that thick undergrowth...!! Wondering if you could include a moment initially of showing the entire cluesheet/map...and then a standing current clue inset at the bottom...watch some of the latest videos by “Kiziev” a Ukrainian who lives in Norway for how he does that...
Always better than being laid up with a cold, which is where I was😒
It was a nice run. Hope you get well and back out there soon.
Great work, some tricky controls there. 👍
I have been trying to create my orienteering videos such as this, with the route inserted picture in picture on the camera video, but I haven't had any succes so far... what Apps did you use to create like this? Could you give me a hand?
I use route gadget and screen record the route. I then use Da Vinci video editing h software to combine the run video and Routegadget video.
@@Steed171 Thanks a lot! I will try that way!
Interesting site features. That whole slope up to 2 was water logged from what...a heavy overnight rain? Did the event staff make people aware that even semi dry ditches might be flooded creeks? I ask because they’re notorious around here for NOT telling us...also that monster tree control2 was on certainly wasn’t drawn correctly on the edge of that earth bank. Hey as an option next video...can you first show the whole map, the clue sheet, and maybe the legend? And then as you progress...the snippet of the next control at the bottom of the screen? Thanks...and good run...
I’ll have a play
Nice! Looks like a workout. :D
Great coverage of my Pre-Start action!😀
Enjoyed the watch novice here thinking , Run ON the Path
Good old hankley
What did you think of the resort? Is it too small for an advanced boarder/skier or is there plenty to do
I would say for 5 days its great. Cormeyeur and La Thuile are only 20 minutes away if you want to combine it for a longer trip. I am an advanced skier and my son is a snowboarder. What is great is that it is far less crowded than some of the larger resorts which means you do get more runs in during a day.
@@Steed171 thanks, is there much to do off piste (side country)?
Aosta is a large town and that is where the gondola goes from. There are lots of shops, restaurants and bars there. On the slope there are quite a few bars but as I haven’t stayed on resort over night I don’t know if there is much going on.
Ha !!! Nice Job.... did you get a bottle of Southern Comfort at the end?
Not yet!
Good effort. Definitely better to go cautious on there!
Terrain with shoulder high bracken is both the worst possible and best possible experience going. I had a great time running the blue. Track option over that stream was waaaay faster! Luckily I found a trunk over the water
Had I known there was a marsh by the stream I would have run around the tracks. That’s what I meant about the map being a bit out of date. Could do with an update.
Thank you for sharing this, it's always interesting to see individual's personal photos and videos from the time.
Glad you enjoyed it

Enjoyed your reflections, thanks. What do you think of the jaran 2?
Thanks. I really like it. It is roomy and robust and not too heavy.
A few obvious mistakes and some hesitation, but overall an interesting race in (for a pure street O with no added OOB) nice "terrain".
You've had better days but at least the dog on #7 tried to help!
It was a lovely dog. I was a bit worried it was going to follow/lead me round the rest of the course.
Nice video. We all have days like that sometimes! What happened on 3-4?
I thought I had crises the main track running E-W and was looking for the control. There were quite a few unmarked water filled depressions where I was looking so seemed to fit the map. 😂😂😂
35:10 - the start, 1980 British Championships
Where's this?
Near Bracknell in the South East of England.
@@Steed171 wow really cool terrain very much different to us in finland
