Mors Kochanski teaching the construction of a simple winter lean-to shelter for overnighting in the Canadian wilderness, for use when conditions are unsuitable for the construction of snow shelters. Not sure of the date for this video, I think its probably early 90's Techniques for building the shelter, bed and fire are demonstrated with minimum tool use.

Its 2024 and im still learning from the great yet humble mors .
Anybody else enjoying this in 24 ??🤔
2 whoever made this ch. N is watching over it thank you . This stuff is true lost treasures found 😊 !
Mors is like a classic book in a library. Few know of it, read it : but nonsense is swallowed like fast food.
I once peeled a bit of skin off my finger trying to tie knot tight, and pulling it with all the force. So better to do it in gloves.

A dead tree is a widowmaker to which Mors learned years later is not something you want to construct your shelter with, but rather something to cut down for firewood or avoid completely.
Thank you!!
Thank you!!
Thank you!!
Man this is a classic!
Mors the man!! Thanks RIP

11:05 ...very thank you mr. K. very simple and usefull ...all of you take...
I can’t get that to work. I saw it on a top bushcrafter copying it from here and someone pointed this video out in the comments. Still don’t get that last part separating it from an ordinary Jam knot.
@@Dr_Dengrot just a normal jam knot with a half hitch so it will not loosen. If you make permanent bindings you may need to consider that
A wealth of knowledge would have love to havbe been mentored by you.
Impressive fire build in some ways. It looks like a modified version of the Siberian log fire. Where the logs can be pushed on as the burn down. He waisted a lot of the first fire heat by not having a pile of sticks that could be immediately pull over on it so as not to waist any first heat. But this was long ago. So I'll cut him some slack. It must have take 5 people to gather all that before dark😂🥇👍
Thank you so much for this excellent video!
Mors sit down and get your breath, we are not so young as we used to be, you don't have to keep up with the young ones, sit and tell us, we are not stupid we understand, get a young trainee and let them do the work as you describe what he or she is doing and why. you don't haul national treasures into the country, and if you do then you make sure they are well looked after.
It's pretty sweet that he used $10.00-15.00 knives for the majority of his career. It's all about knowing how to use them correctly. Also Mora makes damn good knives.
As always, there's a lot to learn from the "Old Man". I try to watch these videos several times to get a more durable memory inprint, but then go out and try it, as muscular memory makes it more solid and "automatic". If anytime I get in a really bad situation, then I'll ask myself: what would the "Old Man" do or recomend now? Thanks Mr Mors, may your knowledge and wisdon be with us for many years to come. Deep respects from Portugal
shelter and fire, without an axe. "The more you know, the less you carry", Mors Kochanski
Excellent knowledge from a very smart man.
Thank you Mors for addressing the concerns of strict side sleepers. Sleeping on my back would detract from my actual enjoyment of sleeping in a shelter I built myself.
awesome video. Your teachings are priceless....Thank you!!!!
Sleep when can ,Keep warm,(the fire going ) when you have to,
One of the absolute best educational videos I have ever watched from the true Master himself in his prime. Thanks for posting! -Dave
Old Mors makes it look like a walk in the park, I guess decades of living and teaching makes it easy!!
The way I look at it, there are easier ways to heat water/food, why make it more difficult. I've seen lot of weird and wonderful methods systems and what do I do now?.........pot on coals.......because its easier, or at most a tripod.
This is a tripod though. pot on coals is fine but if you do it long enough with the thinner pots like most of us use you'll wear through them. this takes all of 30 secs to make.
You The Man, Mr. Mors, you make everything look easy, your logic is that of a surviver, Thanx for some great tips.
nice
I'm diggin' those Mickey Mouse boots. They bring back coooold memories. When you see someone sportin' those you know it's a guy who has seen frozen feet.
I like him in part because he never has anything to sell.
I like the fact that he doesnt constantly use his tools. He knows how to use them, but only uses them as a last resort thus saving their edges. As a kid growing up in the woods I was able to light a fire in any season with out a knife or axe. Now that im into bushcraft I seem further away from that than ever. If anything I may over use my tools. Its good to learn them but also good to not always need them. When newcomers ask what knife to get, I tell them to camp without one for a year.
Mors Kochanski and Dick Proenneke would have been an excellent team in the great white north.
Surprised he cut the paracord....best to keep your cord full length?...what do I know though, he's Mors!? Great vid.
looks very comfortable for being made the way it was...Just missing a good pillow...
Sure looked like one.
Is that a mora?
Yep
Great video's, keep them coming thanks
I learned alot from this video thanks
He is so quick with that knife
After I bought 'Bushcraft' all my other survival books became unnecessary.
yes he is and still teaching too.
Best I've seen, thanks for posting
Great video .. Hope to see more along this line and along the lines of long term sustainability.
wow ten years ... and I still keep coming back to what else I missed on this 3 part video .. it may only be 45 minutes in length but it has hours of information
