what's strange is the official hack the box writeup has the directory as /usr/share/wordlists/common.txt this is what caused me to get it wrong this whole time. i don't know where you found out that dirb had to be added as a dir traversal point but that little bit of information that was completely missing on the actual website threw me off quite a bit. Thank you for your help!

Honestly depends where you are located. A lot of companies esp Government you need a degree otherwise they will just reject your application. But definitely agree that its not needed i would say just get a diploma to get the hands on skill.

Very helpful! This was the only place I was able to find what I needed to know - specifically, the output file command and that "--potfile-disable" command. I can't believe how hard it was to find a resource on hashcat that explained a way to view the results of a hash you previously cracked...I guess everyone else assumes that no one would ever need to take a second look!
