They sound a little similar, however, they are different. The main difference is the shape of the mouth when saying the sounds. This results in a different sound. /ʊ/: A near-close, near-back, rounded vowel. The tongue is positioned back in the mouth, with the corners of the lips drawn together. /ə/: A neutral vowel. That means you only open your mouth slightly and make the sound. The lips and tongue are relaxed and in a neutral position. Hope this helps.
