Our erosion control structures constructed by BECY students are awesome and part of every ranch tour we give. You all are awesome beyond words, and doing amazing work on behalf of the land and all it’s inhabitants. Thank you all so much. Abrasos, besos, y saludos por todos. Mucho gusto mis amigos!

You need to take the dead growth off the grass plant, otherwise it will choke it self. It can not shed its own leafs like trees can. This act of removing dead growth from grasses was done by huge amounts of herbivorous (herds of 100.000+ was common) until mankind killed them off, and with them gone, so disappeared the vital grasses that kept the soil in place, covered/shaded so water didnt evaporate or in general just healthy so that the soil could feed rivers with water throughout the year. The dominant plants that we see today are what we call rest tolerate species taking over, species that can reproduce without the symbiosis with grazing animals, but also way less of a benefit the the environment as a whole. We can mimic these gone mega herds with livestock to bring back the health of these dead landscapes if we want to.

Kudos to you guys for the work that you do. My wife and I have considered moving to the Patagonia region and we would definitely love to get involved with you guys. Please add photos of 'before and after' the Holistic Planned Grazing or Managed Intensive Grazing. Too many people think that grazing and/or browsing animals cause desertification and need to see how properly managed grazing RESTORES the land. Wealthy and powerful people and corporations are investing heavily in fake 'meat' substitutes. To promote their products and profits, they are claiming that animals damage the land, give off greenhouse gas - (though one acre of healthy pasture land can absorb as much methane as about 200 head of cattle can produce, so pastureland for raising beef and dairy cattle can absorb as much as 199 times the methane that one cow burps!), and other propaganda. Please share the facts. When properly managed to mimic the natural relationship between the land and animals, they need to see that cattle and other livestock can: - Halt soil erosion - Reduce or eliminate evaporation of moisture from the soil - Reduce temperatures of soil surfaces exposed to sunlight, by as much as 10 +/- degrees F. Given the increasing amount of desert, near desert, and bare soil in crop fields, along with the sunlight hitting pavement and buildings around the world, this ALONE can account for much of the change we are all seeing in climate and weather patterns. (Decreasing pollution is always a good idea, of course.) - Significantly increases the vitally important soil life. - Increases soil fertility, and yield - year after year - WITHOUT expensive fertilizers (that kill soil life, pollute waterways and groundwater, and/or gass off into the air), AND while producing highly nutritious and tasty food for humans. - Increases infiltration of rainfall into the soil, which restores the water cycle: groundwater, springs, streams, lakes, and rivers are all renewed - without topsoil loss through water erosion, AND water-dwelling wildlife that needs clear water to survive can be restored, too. - Increases biodiversity both above and below the soil surface. Diverse communities of soil organisms, plant life, and wildlife = an ecosystem more resilient to stress, including weather extremes, climate change, etc. If someone chooses not to eat meat, the Earth still needs the ecological functions provided by the hundreds of millions of herbivores that were here just a 100-500 years ago.

Richard is actually one of the top blacksmiths in the country and spending 40 years as a functional and artist blacksmith is longer than most. He doesn't brag much, but he's done period-correct restoration work on the ironwork in 400-year-old monasteries and does very high-end work both decorative and functional. His forged tables, gates, and architectural work are some of the best. Richard is a rare teacher, a true legacy of the oldest traditions in blacksmithing which is rarer than you might know. I've studied with Richard, as well as many others around the country including some from the oldest schools in Europe. A chance to learn from Richard is not to be missed by anyone at any experience level.
