A few thoughts from the book "The Inner Game of Tennis" by Timothy Gallwey, on how we can restore the dynamic and trusting relationship between our "conscious" and "unconscious" selves away from a spiral of recrimination into a circle of growth.

A few thoughts on addiction - recognising there is a problem, thanking the substances in question for their "service", then ramping down consumption and ramping up replacements! Cold turkey is probably not the best option in your personal life or for society.
decarbonising Canada's energy supply - a first sketch

five minute study

A tactic to avoid the "vortex of procrastination" when faced with a "big scary task". Give yourself just five minutes - go all in, get into the task. At the end of five minutes, you have a choice, and you give yourself total freedom without judgement or recrimination, to drop the task and do something else. Often I find that I am motivated to continue working on the "big scary task" after the f...
you are where you are, be there now

We have a tendency to look back with sadness at some "glory days" where we did seemingly large and impressive accomplishments, but today we are incapable of reaching those heights. Remember, we are not uni-dimensional and there are seasons to a life as things come and go, losing and gaining importance. No need to be sad - be here now with what you are capable of.

life lessons from tennis

A few thoughts on life lessons from the game of tennis. If you look too far ahead into the future, hoping the ball will go where you want it to go, you're likely going to screw up on the shot. You gotta keep your eyes on the ball right up until contact. Just like in life.
avoid the vortex of procrastination
Просмотров 20Год назад
When we are about to embark on a new adventure/project, we tend to imagine future outcomes, often a lot of negative ones. This can lead us into what I call the "vortex of procrastination". I offer you here a few strategies to avoid the vortex. Reframe the imagined negative outcomes into learning, and be ready for delightful surprises.

A few strategies for handling the potential stress and overwhelm that can come when trying to make mitigation and backup plans for all of the potential things that "might" happen in the future. Remember, there is only ever one path we are walking - accept there will be surprises - and trust that you can handle whatever comes up.

Great overview! Thank you!
Is this anything like "The Game of Work" by Charles Coonrandt? (which is a great book, btw)
thanks for the suggestions, I'm not familiar with that book
The solar awnings could be more artistically implemented, less square blocks and more elegantly curved, but the idea is flawless as car parks are wasted space most of the time. Plus solar awnings provide a bunch of other benefits outside of power generation.
Curved solar is mostly not a good idea because it would mean the solar panels are facing different angles and the weakest module in the string connection would limit the whole string.
@@toozydude2 Perhaps but the structure the panels are attached to could be more elegant, we have enough basic brutalist architecture and since we are never going back to art deco or gothic style then all we can hope for are elegant curves and natural design
Absolutely! An often overlooked benefit is the abatement of the incredible radiating heat from a giant slab of parking lot asphalt. Parking lots and roads store and radiate so much heat for long periods of time, and soar panels help turn that wasted stopped energy into useable electricity and HVAC savings in adjacent buildings. I'm the summer, they save coming by keeping the surrounding area and cars cooler. I'm the winter, they trap latent heat under the canopy and can keep cars from ice buildup
What a great episode. Hayden must be so proud to be able to say, "Iron a business that is helping to decarbonize the petrochemical industry." Can't wait for the 2nd episode!
Wow, I missed a few! Thanks for all of these sketches, they were fun and educational. Can't wait to follow you on the next leg of your online journey. Guest I'll just have to wait and see what you've cooked (using renewable energy of course) up for us.
we've got some "hot" episodes coming out of the furnace !
Bravissimo, Michael. I wonder if word of the positive impact of the training spread to employees who didn't take the training initially resulting in more taking the training
hi, thanks! He talks in the book about how the sign-up rate among operators was 100%!
Yes!!
Your father is very happy with your presentation. Great stuff!
Thanks so much!
I loved it. KL
Thank you Michael for the Great summary Timothy Gallwey's discovery of the Two Selves!!!
thank you jeffrey for finding it and tuning in!
Great hack! Like Nietsche said, "If you gaze into the vortex of procrastination, the vortex gazes also into you."
sounds like you've been gazing into a vortex of Nietsche quotes! Perhaps the more you gaze, the more you become the vortex
Thanks for the total freedom that comes without judgement or recrimination ...and teaching me the term, decision gate. Much love! Tootles!!
the key is total freedom, yes! Tootles :) decision gate LOL, such a "corporate" term.... but it is a good one. Choice point - decision gate - go/no-go etc...
#bigscarytask
Whoo! Let's go!!
I have come to the conclusion that life is made of chapters. Some seem more busy or challenging than others. The key is to keep having fun!!
yes, seasons or chapters! And such a great reminder to "keep having fun!"
This was cool! Anything that reduces the length or number of meetings is gold, Jerry! Another idea I've been implementing at my company is asynchronous one-on-one meetings. One person makes a slack video in their 1:1 channel with the other person and then the other person responds with their own video. So it's a conversation, just not in real time. It doesn't replace EVERY 1:1 meeting but it helps, especially for people in different time zones.
yes, I love this technique also, I often send short little video messages to colleagues. leveraging the asynchronous work environment like this can really be beneficial.
I like the idea of "forcing" people to read the memo at the beginning of the meeting. It would allow a buffer for late-comers, start people's brains on the subject. And save the presenter the duty of reading the slides for everyone. Présentations should be self-sufficient anyway.
yes, the "forcing" is a good thing, it's actually more compassionate for everyone. I used to think "no, everyone should commit to reading it ahead of time..." but this is a bit too harsh and probably not necessary. As for your comment "presentations should be self-sufficient" - I think I disagree there.... for me a report with backup and references is self-sufficient. A presentation needs a presenter! Trying to use a powerpoint "presentation" instead of a report, with bulleted lists that people read while you present is so wasteful.... a presentation is a story, it needs a storyteller
Really cool episode! I wonder if there is any benefit to the substation being underground. Like, is it easier/less expensive to maintain the right temperature or maybe less maintenance because it is not exposed to inclement weather? It also seems safer because no vehicle can crash into it and there is no possibility of a lightning strike or other weather event.
Great question. I don't know the details, but I imagine it adds cost and complexity for operations and maintenance. If the stuff was out in the open air, no need for ventilation, easy to install and remove. Underground probably gets difficult for access etc. But it is protected from the elements, so equipment might last longer. It's all about choices and tradeoffs I guess....
This was great! I LOVE tennis but, as you say, if I don't keep my eye on the ball and have strong fundamentals, love means nothing.
love matters too! but it doesn't hit a tennis ball, that's true...
Loved this! But now I want pizza. Not working late pizza just, you know, Netflix pizza.
I hope you get a gooood pizza
This was great! I bet it tuque a lot of hard work making it pithy and not beret long.
I hat to work really really hard indeed
Love that you are teaching us ways to work with ourselves (small self) ❤❤❤
Little things, bit by bit
Don't doubt your ideas. Love this! Brilliant ❤🎉
Thank you!
Eating the elephant one bite at a time works as well
Same idea lol. All you need to do is just take the next bite
excellent idea!
Thanks for tuning in! The idea really helps me
Fascinating - so if diamonds are manufactured, will there scarcity price go down? Or will they still be valued for their beauty?
interesting question! there are so many factors here - lab-grown diamonds are used mostly in industry today, but interest seems to be growing, and there are questions of scale and size that can be grown. I'm personally not enamored by diamonds, but... to each their own!
Every time you cite one of these massive uses of diesel, it makes my chest hurt. 80 million gallons, I can't fathom what that is doing to the environment. Clearly, clean energy is a girl's best friend!
ya, the numbers are big, but they're just numbers, and need to be considered relative to other things. and it's liters not gallons :)
Diamonds....the best way to get a girl's attention 😂
Hahaaa yes indeed! And now they can be sustainable also
Solar electricity, into Rechargeable Batteries that is ! Lol, Ta-ra !!!
So what about Batteries?? Electricity by silar or wind, into Bayteries... What about Battery cars and trucks??
yes batteries are good for phones, computers, cars and maybe small trucks, but they don't scale much larger than that - for long durations, high power, long time storage we need other things like chemical energy in fuels
I still say your work is Powerful,... A catalyst of work (my as a Physiologist lol). I thank you for your efforts and contemplative work !
Me, that is lol
you're welcome, thanks for tuning in!
So, what's your opinion about "Batteries" ? Wind or solar powered, I to electricity, in to Batteries. For landscape equipment or cars, Batteries ???
batteries have their place , but they are not appropriate for this scale of energy storage and transport.
OMG! Just what I needed to hear, just at the right time. Thank you for your efforts to produce these (& your "Zens") !!!
So so happy to hear that its making a difference for you. Sending love and zenitude
I like to imagine this process as the protagonist in the movie Memento with his tattoos to his future self, especially the one that says, "Never answer the phone." Words to live by.
That was a wild and scary movie.
Lots of great energy and ideas! Thanks for the encouragement, and kudos to you !!!
Thanks so much!
Writing to my future self seems fun. The real Breakthrough would be to write to my past self😂
What would you tell them, may I ask?? :)
@@energysketch I would tell them not to be afraid to challenge people and rules. "Speak for yourself, go girl go!!"
Nice! This is a good message for any self! Past present or future :)
"simple, rugged, & robust"... Power words there! Love the idea
Thanks rochelle!
Ah! Lovely visualization and reframe. Shame as "unworthy of connection", a searing description. Thanks for sharing - Well done !
Thanks!
Fascinating, there are so many other worlds, concerns and research out there - than just healthcare lol ! Thanks for broadening my horizens
thanks for tuning in Rochelle! indeed, it is so fun to learn about new and different fields from our "day to day" - keep on learning and exploring!
Microwaves like tiny kicks in the backside to make it all the way to far and beyond. I like that !!!
100GW is a pretty decent "kick in the derriere" !
"It's the consistency of effort that is more real", Amen !
"We've killed freedom by offering the illusion of freedom," with highways and 2 lane roads, So true, although the US is "trying" in some cities - Chicago is much more bike/pedestrian friendly.
Yes even detroit motor city has a growing network of robust cycling tracks which is great to see!
Congratulations Michael!!!
Thanks Maria!!
"material production and energy storage", fascinating! I grew up in Ohio, now live in Pennsylvania, both considered "The Rust Belt", by the Great lakes. They produced steel, as material, without thought of CO2 production or waste .. maybe the Renaissance can be your "Energy Sketch" today? Hopeful, again. Thank you!
Indeed i believe there are big opportunities to revitalise these areas in the energy transition
Perfect!!👏👏
Thanks for tuning in, glad you enjoyed it
Urban sprawl sux. I don't see urban planners often being creative or innovative with planning the ambush of underdeveloped lands.
Sadly there is surely a lot of potential for creativity in the space and many creative people working in it, but it seems to be often stifled in layers of rules and rules and practices that dont have their place anymore and are not achieving what they are supposed to.
Wow! Thank you for this Michael, as i have been spinning lately. Love the physics analogy too. Good to have awareness and a new tool!
Glad it can help a little bit! Be well and take that spinning energy and spin it out into motion!
"Shared Understanding" an ambitious goal, but challenging??
Ambitious but achievable (?) and so important
@@energysketch your optimism gives me Hope!
Sustainable is "continuable" (is that a word?!)
Thats what i was looking for lol yes thanks!
So informative.
