glad you brought up the players traveling with their gods Mike, i remember almost killing my god because of an earthquake spell underground and a gelanous cube
So are we j7st gonna homebrew ranger from now on?
4th edition is the Nickleback of D&D. Everyone hates it because its popular, but secretly we all know we had fun playing it despite its flaws
I enjoyed 4thed but dont tell anyone
Great first half looking forward to the rest. This feels like D&D 5.5 or maybe 6th since I can’t see 5th and this being compatible.
We also have our doubts about how backwards compatible things will be. Only time will tell
What are your thoughts about not having a BBEG at all? Ive played with making a campaign that has "bosses", but depending on the player choices they are the ones who essentially save the world or destroy it.
Wait, Grunk can swing a great club and push a wizard 25 ft in 1 direction.... it doesn't say that up is not a direction. Fall damage plus prone at the end on top of getting the uppercut from hell
Jaw or groin, 25ft is a deadly amount of crushing force
of course you thing of up first
It's actually amazing how much I needed to hear that you don't need to have a villain from the beginning without me knowing how much I needed to hear that. Thank you.
im glad it helps. sometimes we put way to much pressure on ourselves as GMs
Ideas like a time stopping watch. Since i havent been playing that lon i personally dont have any major horror stories. The one that came the closest actually turned into my favorite moment. Im both happy and sad with my lack of horror experiences.
Awesome!
So stoked you're back in action! I talk up the podcast to anyone I end up in a d&d conversation with and will definitely be letting people know you're back
another good example of op dmpc that didn't hurt the story or take control was in nick's game with Constantine
i'd love to tell some of my DM horror stories
So happy you all are back! Looking forward again to the shows.
Hi Mike and Nick, Donald here. Game on.
This is a really great setting!!! Thank you for sharing. I can't wait to see where the story goes!!!
Thank you so Much
Well done. Another entertaining and informative show. 👍
Thanks!!
So excited to be a part of this!! Can't wait to play tomorrow!!
Feeling a major Pirates of Dark Water vibe! Love it
Sounds like fun! I can relate to the egg metaphor, for sure. 🤓 I guess that would make you an "egghead"?
This sounds fun as hell! Can't wait to see more. I've been on a pirate binge since i work at a pirate themed bar😂
I played my first game in years this past weekend and the GM actually yelled at the players and even degraded them, especially when they were trying to be creative. It was like the gm was on defense the whole time. It was sad. It seems that the "toxic" gamers (player or GM) are the ones who play it like a win or lose kind of game, with the other gamers at the table as their competitive opponent. "I'm gonna beat (out smart) him/her" "I'm gonna win!"... or ...They are simply narcissists, in or out of game. Some people are just asshats.
100% understand that. For me the game was always the story, not winning or losing
The crits and fumbles?
"good, bad, ugly"... thought it might be Savage Worlds! 🤠
Nice tale. Sometimes player backstories become the campaign, and when they do it’s an amazing thing.
Would love to have my "flame twins" in that setting!
That would have been cool
Sounds amazing and horrific at the same time.
It was fun but boy was there alot of salt sometimes
In the comic book world, the issue you're describing is "street level" characters versus "world savers" or "cosmic" characters. Here are some examples for those who might not know what I mean: 1. Daredevil is a traditionally "street level" hero. He takes on thugs and gangsters, occasionally taking a bigger swing at a mob boss like Kingpin. 2. Superman is your classic "cosmic" character. His strength and abilities have no rational upper limit and he regularly tussles with universe collapsing threats. There are also hybrid characters, like Batman. Traditionally, he's "just a man" who uses his vast wealth and resources to become the World's Greatest Detective. His rogue's gallery is zany to be sure, but doesn't often feature world-ending threats. That being said, he has crossed over on more than one occasion into a more cosmic tier, this most commonly occurring when he is set next to other cosmic heroes like Superman and the writer can't figure out how to have Batman pull his weight.
I always try to let my players know the level of game we are gonna be doing
Another thing to remember as a game master: it's almost always more fun to say "yes" than "no." If your player has a wild idea, see if you can roll with it! Maybe things go off the rails a bit, and *maybe that's the most fun you have in the session because it's organic 'play.'*
I always thought "Session Zero" referred to the character creation session, since that can usually take a full time slot.
One thing to try to avoid as a game master is steering your players away from your smudges. If your players fixate on a thing that you only mentioned in passing, that's your window into connecting with them and immersing them in your world. Don't blow it off if you can avoid it! Restructure the whole session if it demands it and you can swing it.
Neil Gaiman (one of my favorite living authors) describes world-building during his Masterclass as placing "smudges" throughout the world. Small moments that indicate a larger life independent of the players (or reader) without requiring an elaborate design document exhaustively detailing exactly what they do.
Really useful and honest commentary. So many DMs get all caught up in the how and the what of systems without ever delving into the WHY that motivates their players, which is always, always the most important thing. Pacing. Pacing. PACING.
This is something all DMs, GMs, and Storytellers struggle with. Players not understanding their alignment. I dislike the whole 'My character would do it!' argument.
People always forget that even in chaos (via chaos theory) there are repeating patterns, connections, and forms of organization. It isn't just "cause I feel like it"
Games where we all fall short when dealing with problem players always leave a bad taste in my mouth. Being able to admit when you fall into that trap is a good sign of maturity. Great story!
Love seeing you on more media platforms. Miss playing with all you guys at the Guild
Thanks and ill have more to come
Good start! Keep them coming broski!
Very nice story. Slow burn reveals are a great tool, if the players are down for it. If the GM plays it wrong you could get push back from the player. Sounds like she did it perfectly. Good episode, looking forward to more.
She did! its easily made this campaign one of my all time favs
simple bastard. NAH I'M PLAYING LMAO great vid bro
Thanks man. More stuff to come!
Loved the vod today man. You really came into your own at about 5:01 And bro, it’s not a coincidence that it was the first genuine smile that triggered you to start flowing in your new environment here. You are awesome man.
