Vinyl Terry

Hello, vinyl community! I'm a husband, dad, journalist and perpetually disappointed Mets fan, and in my free time I'm spinning A LOT of records. In Record Time is an extension of my Instagram personality ( vinyl_terry), and has a bit of a double meaning: it's record time, so we're obviously talking about music primarily on vinyl (although I'll touch on CDs and cassettes at times), but also a play on words as I want these videos to be short takes (when possible) and to the point. Let's try and get these done "in record time." Be sure to subscribe, like and comment so we can keep the discussion moving!

Record Store Day 2023 haul: Taylor Swift, Pearl Jam, Stevie Nicks and other Nuggets
Просмотров 990Год назад
Another Record Store Day is in the books and after spending a long morning at Strictly Discs in Madison, Wisconsin, I reveal my haul that includes: the Nuggets box set, Taylor Swift, U2, Stevie Nicks, Peter Tosh, Pearl Jam, Fleetwood Mac, Miles Davis, Soul Asylum, Nico, The Cranberries and Carole King. (And I'm just joking ... I'm not going to flip Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions.) What...

I like to think I'm on top of new releases, but sometimes things fly under the radar and I sometimes miss things completely. And in some cases, their are gray market or bootleg releases that just pop up in bins. I recently found records from Townes Van Zandt, Fleetwood Mac, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Dualtone Records, R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, Brendan Benson of The Raconteurs, and The Replacement...
Unboxing The Strokes new box set The Singles - Volume 01

The Strokes (@thestrokes) recently released a collection of 7" singles in a box set called The Singles (06.25.2001-09.06.2006) - Volume 01. It contains 10 singles, which I pull out and highlight. I also compare the single for 12:51 to an original single that I got as a promotional item with the purchase of Room on Fire on CD when that came out in 2003. What do you think? The Rolling Stones in Mono box set review: Does it live up to the hype?

I recently received The Rolling Stones in Mono box set. This updated version is also limited to 10,000 copies like the first edition, but this time all the records were pressed in color. While I never heard the original mono box, some who have both say this updated version sounds better as it's not the same transfer. In my opinion, it sounds great but I go into more details in this video. What ...

What’s the retail on this?
You spelled Primus wrong in the title js
This Is so cool, I want to buy this after I get all the albums
I like your cool and honest appraisal. A very enjoyable review 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks , this was exactly what I was looking for - a good look at the Three 7" box in particular as I've still never seen it in person (it was maybe a little harder to come by over here in the UK?).
Was probably just a U.S. release. I’m not sure.
@@vinylterry I've just ordered a sealed one on import for not much over the original sticker price so I'll finally get hold it it shortly anyway, cheers
Nice!
I was there! I personally own this box set too. Excellent.
it only came out as vinyl is it? no cd?
As far as I’m aware this is a vinyl only release.
@@vinylterryok thanks!
Don't know if it's of interest but even tho not on cd I listened to it on my amazon music app digitally
Was never a strokes fan at time of release but this collection warmed me to them sone nice songs on here worth listening to
Nice haul Terry! Easily among the best of the RSD lists and output that I have seen this year.
A really solid list after a few mixed years. Thanks for watching!
Alright! Another vinyl enthusiast from Wisconsin!! I didn't participate in RSD this year but my Nuggets box set from Discogs is on its way! Stoked to spin that as I love Lenny Kaye's original legendary compilation. Happy spinning, Terry! Enjoy!
It was cold and snowy 4th winter a week after false summer. Glad you have Nuggets on the way. Hope to listen to that soon. I’m not even halfway through my haul.
I went to my store at 4pm and got everything I wanted! The Sun Ra solo Rhodes concert, Bill Evans’ Treasures, Albert Ayler boxset, Sonny Stitt’s Bubba Sessions, Archie Shepp Live at Massy, and the New York Noise compilation
Nice!
I guess is it worth it?
It was a solid release. The big question with TMR now is with the price hikes, is there still enough value out of any release they do? Not sure. They’re not doing audiophile quality work.
@@vinylterry yeah it seems like the price doesn’t equal out.
Good review thanks! Pros and cons well highlighted. Very happy with my copy and surprising good quality for a boxset made by CZ (Revolver coming from same factory has been a warping nightmare ).
Thanks for watching! I think CZ is such a massive facility that they’re prone to more problems with QC than a smaller operation. I have stuff from there that’s fine and other things not so much.
Plastic ono band is a tough listen for me especially mother. I have the plastic ono box set the 5.1 disc is very good. The imagine box is excellent, the only lennons to avoid is two virgins and lions. The last 2 albums double fantasy and milk and honey are half john half yoko but over the years yoko's songs have grown on me.
Have you noticed the “The Srtokes” misprint on the spine of YOLO?
I didn’t. It’s so small I didn’t check. Someone forgot to hit spellcheck.
Agree they sound amazing! Did not expect this from today,'s vinyl. Records very clean right out of the box All records perfect no warps.. Yes agree could have been a hardcover book and original inners as well as a lenticular cover for majesties request.
Thanks for watching!
How come the individual albums are going almost as high as the complete collection which was released last RSD?
The prices on the individual are dropping. Last sold Rumours on Discogs sold for under $30. Those original versions had pretty limited quantities until they got to the self titled and Rumours. Tusk was going for $100+ but now it’s almost half that. And I think some people might not know there was a box. Maybe someone just needs one to fill a gap and doesn’t want the whole box. OGs are black and the box version is clear. I’d probably just get the box at this point and sell off the individual ones if I was filling holes.
@@vinylterry thanks for the response. I think Ill pick up the set
Hello, i think the reason your vintage mono records look clean yet have surface noise is probably because you dont have a mono switch on your amp. That switch will eliminate the dead channel that will only produce noise. Modern mono pressings are pressed differently so its not a problem on them.
Interesting insight. Thanks!
I would love to get Santana and Johnny Winter at Woodstock.
They’re really solid. Johnny Winter is pretty reasonable. Santana is a bit pricey now.
Do you have any uploaded video of your The Strokes collection?
Just this box. I have all the albums, a 10” EP and another single. I might do a video at some point.
I really hope they do a Volume 2, this one is just perfection in my eyes.
"New York City Cops" was removed from the album *in the United States*, we could listen to it just fine in the rest of the world. "When It Started" was kinda cool too though.
You also got the better album cover. NYC Cops remained on the US vinyl version as it was too late, but after 9/11 they pulled it from the CD.
@@vinylterry Oh really, I didn't know that. It's a terrific song, it's too bad that the timing was so unfortunate.
@@jlrolling the us and eu had different album covers on some of the albums as well, interesting stuff. like both. Specifically the is this it album.
pretty cool box ... i wasnt that interested in it ... specialy cause of its price ... and i dont listen too much of 7" vinyl ... im a little lazy to turn sides taht often ... eehehh ... but after watching youre vid .... now i want one too .... grrrrrr ;) keep up the good vids Congrats from Portugal
Thanks for watching! I have a love/hate relationship with 7”. A pain in the butt yet fun to collect. I started listening and they sound great. Plus I’m getting a lot of exercise.
@@vinylterry eheheh ... 🙂 "every cloud has a silver lining" ;)
I look forward to RSD but I've never gotten 1 single item I've ever wanted because there's only 1 RS near by and the next closest is 2 1/2 hours away
And there is one example of the problems with RSD and no online option.
I have 19 titles on my list. 4 are a must haves. another 5 are "will get if they aren't too expensive" the rest are "maybe"/"how much they cost". From the ones you mentioned Soul Asylum is a must have. Albatross,Billy Joel, Police,U2 are "maybe". btw. thanks for clearing up the recording year on Billy Joel. It was listed only as live and i only saw the sleeve pic and couldn't tell if it were 75 or 78. Pasi
Thanks for watching!
No didn't pick it up I won't buy any of these terrible reissues from digital sources. I have the original mono mixes..that's all one needs.
and to be fair I get it's subjective. That's my views. If you like the more sterile sound , it would be amazing. Not trying to bring your review down. I do listen to digitized rips from Vinyl that I procure.. and some sound better than the LP due to bringing the noise floor down. Good work with your reviews .
Hi from Australia, I have only played a couple of albums, but I thought the Bass was overblown and boomy a bit fake sounding but overall not bad sounding 🤷🏻♂️
yeah they unfortunately think because they have more accurate cutting heads they theoretically can get away with more bass and over compression (Hot - or brick walled) but it ends up not working out through the cartridge and audio system.. makes for mud - they do it with highs as well. Not a new problem though but way more common now. Over modulating the cutting head back in the day simply caused a playback stylus to jump out of the groove .
Cant wait to see the ridiculous prices this year. We might need another round of covid checks to make up for the rise in inflation it caused.
Prices definitely aren’t going lower.
Hello I saw Miles Davis in concert in the late 1980s. It was around the time of his Tutu album release. His back up band were very funky.
I'm looking forward to getting the Grateful Dead box set of the Boston show on 5/7/77. That particular concert is considered just as great as the famous Barton Hall show from the next day. I'm also getting the Jerry Garcia Band - How Sweet It is, Stevie Nicks - Bella Donna Live '81, Miles David - Turnaround & Wilco - The Alternate Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. I'm sure I'll end up getting 2 or 3 more albums when that day comes. I'm lucky because I always get everything I want on Record Store Day. I usually get there between 7:00 & 7:30am. It's cool to talk to all the young people in line & see what they're getting. I enjoy it.
The early bird gets the records. A lot of great choices.
Guestroom Records! My go-to place :)
I loved that store when I lived near Louisville.
I’m glad people still support RSD. 10 , 15 years ago I always lined up, usually #1 but now I find the albums in my travels so I don’t start looking until late in the day. I had about a dozen albums and cut them down to only 4 that intrigued me. I just keep looking for items that are rare and hard to find. A lot of albums I can get an OG cheaper. It has changed but it needed to to keep younger vinyl lovers interested I just would rather find that special OG. Rich Kids intrigued me and a couple Latin albums
i think RSD thrives on desperation...my experience is queuing for hours to get into a shop that has nothing you went there for, so in desperation you buy anything just to have made your time worth while......and whats the compulsion with bootlegs all of a sudden ?
Bootlegs = running out of source material.
And yet you peeped in here, interesting...
Just discovered your channel and subbed you up, very good video, thanks for sharing, Peace!
Thanks for watching and subbing!
Nice list. I'm looking forward to Husker Du "Longhorn Tonight" and I'll probably snag the Soul Asylum as well.
Being from Minnesota those picks are definitely appropriate!
Prices are outrageous, and this has turned into a money making ploy for record labels. In the long run, this will hurt the industry, and the very people is designed to help, the independent record store owners, as they are likely to sit on a lot of inventory they are not going to move. My 2 cents.
Prices are nuts. My shop rarely has much left by Monday. I think they have gotten good at knowing their customers.
Good video! I see almost nothing on the list I am interested in! Maybe the Billy Joel album.....but thats about it.
Thanks for watching!
Can you explain the Indie Exclusive LIST? There are stores that allows pre-orders?!?!?!?!
Indie exclusives are basically RSD sanctioned releases throughout the year that are variants of regular releases. They're limited but you can usually preorder them from your shop on a first come basis. RSD releases are exclusive to Record Store Day. You can't order them and have to decide how important they are to you as you might have to get on line hours before a shop opens to improve your chances. But, a lot of FOMO around RSD and in most cases you can get things at normal prices after the fact if you wait it out.
@@vinylterry I was expecting Opeth and Voivod to keep the reissues in colored vinyl for RSD... but they are not on the list... but on the Indie list there are Messugah Obzen and Metallica 72 seasons, I am interested... so I will skip the line this year.
Great video The Taylor is going to be 115,000
Is it really that high? Might be a new RSD record if true.
And thanks for watching!
@@vinylterry Right now the RSD website lists the Taylor Swift at 75,000
Enjoyed watching this sir! Thanks for walking us through your thoughts on the RSD list. 🙏🏻
Thanks for watching!
i dont see anything too hot on the list. I'm getting Foals Life is Dub and Beggars Banquet since i dont have the toilet cover, just the rsvp plain one. i have zero billy joel and i can say i don't need any more billy joel. awesome!
I would've been interested in Beggars Banquet but just got the mono box and also have reissue with a bonus 12" and flexi from a few years back that has the RSVP cover over the toilet cover. Since it's just a color variant, I'm sitting that one out.
@@vinylterry yeah i get it. I just have an old reissue with the invite cover.
I love the toilet cover.
Half Speed Master is really nothing special. The Miles is my #1.
I’m with you on the half speed.
The sound noise on the #52 I got are awful. To be honest these presses probably have more pops than anything else in my collection. Maybe I just got unlucky.
Do you clean them before playing? I find all their releases to be very dirty.
@@vinylterry I tried on 3 separate occasions out of determination. Very deep cleans at that.
Loved seeing all your Bruce 45s. I have a few, definitely need to get more. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching!

Great haul Terry! What number was your Doors release ?
7861. What was yours?
@@vinylterry #2816. They had 4 left by the time I got to them and like you I was 4th in line so limited quantities for a release of 10,000.
The Doors always sell well. Glad you got it.
@@vinylterry The Doors rank third behind The Beatles and Zeppelin being my favorites if I had to rank them.
Genius idea with alternates
Nice haul...I also picked up the DreamWidow, The Doors, and the Eric Burdon & War. I also got the Amahd Jamal and Fleetwood Mac sets. I had some trade at my local store so was able to get the Fleetwood Mac on trade. The Doors is pretty cool and the Eric Burdon sounds amazing. All good stuff!
Nice haul. I bought all the alternate Fleetwood Mac albums as they came out. Glad they did a second run on those for a box.
