This is a story I did with photographer J.R. Mahon at KARE TV in 1998. Because of the El Nino that year, the ferry boat from Bayfield, WI to Madeline Island was still running late into the winter so the ice road wasn't available yet. The locals created the "Ferry Boat Blues" song from scratch in a local bar.

A look back at life in Joyce Lasser's 1st Grade Class at Burroughs Elementary in Minneapolis in 2008-2009, featuring children who would later become part of the Class of 2020. We captured the original footage for the annual class video, a.k.a. "Lasser Land" a project with a running time about 15 minutes. This is a much shorter retrospective showing my son Elias and his classmates back in the day.

I don't speak French, nor do I read it. And that had the most to do with my initial confusion about the Minnesota state motto "L'Etoile du Nord" when I first moved here. That, and the fact I came from Kansas where the state slogan is all about work.
