THE NEIL PEART EXPERIMENT - by KEN MARY PART 2 - "FREEWILL"
This video chronicles the educational purpose of “The Neil Peart Experiment,” performed by session drummer Ken K Mary, and is PART 2. (Neil is one of Ken's drumming influences, and Ken is a great fan Neil's composition and performance.) Here is the experiment: could a session drummer replace the existing drum tracks, that were not performed to a click track, and make the replacement parts almost seamless in tone and performance? Would the new drum tracks be able to lock to the existing musical tracks without any issues? Could the song sound close to the same? Could this be done all in one pass, like the original recordings?

Amazing 🤘 Neil’s drumming was so incredibly creative and the not “hard” crowd are the ones that don’t create such musical inspiration, imo…
Most excellent!
Buetiful job.
TY so much Paul!
The attack on that snare is crisp. Love it.
🙏
Outstanding! Keep ‘em coming.
TY so much!!🙏
Nailed it!
TY Trevor!!🙏
Very inspiring, I love it! Keep these videos coming!
TY Jessie!!
What makes this educational? All you're doing is playing a Rush song - zero teaching. And the constant stick twirls isn't helping your case.
Someone needs a hug ❤
@@arm5080 Maybe a bit of a thump too. "God particle" may be a clue.
@@freddiejupiter442 Hahahahaha!!
@@arm5080 Indeed!! 😄
Bear in mind this is Part 2. I'm going to do a wrap up where I talk about what I used, how I tuned the drums, and what I learned from attempting to do this the way I was challenged to record it, which I'm guessing you didn't read? And I'm guessing you are not a drummer, or maybe a bot, but thanks for listening. I did learn a great deal from this process. If you are a drummer, I do suggest trying to do this on your own. You will learn a good deal, including the great practice of trying to lock to existing parts that move along the timeline... and not least is it will remind you once again what an amazing composer Neil was.
Well done. Funny, those who say it’s not hard are always the ones I hear screw it up. Don’t forget, the lyrics Neil wrote for this are off the charts and even more true today.
Indeed, that's a complete additional aspect of his genius for sure...
People act like "hard" means better, lol. This is hard to play like that. Great job here.
@@augustdrums1247 TY very much! And I agree, Ringo played some "easy" parts, but his feel and musicality was undeniable.
Holy Smokes! I knew this would be good, but I didn't realize how crazy this song is until I watched this. That middle section - wow - your timing is so precise its mind-blowing.
Wow, TY so much Cathy!🙏
Did you play with YYNOT?
I did not, but I did play with a bunch of other artists. You can look in the about info on this channel. 🙏
Badass as always. Your drumming is one of the reasons I’m picking “I Am the Weapon” as my album of the year within the next couple of weeks. 🤫
Wow, awesome! TY so much!
Hell Yeah!!😊 Precisely done
TY Jack!!🙏
Brilliant!
Fantastic Ken!
@@ModernDayWarrior2112 Ty!! 🙏
dude!!!!!!!!!!!!! awesome mix, great playing! 10/10 performance. I play in a Rush tribute band, and everytime we play that song, I get some small detail wrong LOL but I like to think Neil would say "Nice try, kid. keep it up."
@@diegopeart TY so much Diego! That is very appreciated!
Very well done, Ken! The most impressive 1:11 minutes of instrumental greatness from the lads of Canada.
They were the stuff!! And TY for the very kind words!!🙏
That was really really good. The first one I saw of people playing Neil Peart weren't playing with power and that was a big problem because Neil played with power. This guy was right on point. He was hitting the drums and hitting him hard and his technique was excellent. I would love to have this guy in my band. By the way I play in a deep purple cover band so you would have a lot of fun with that....
TY for the kind words!! Deep Purple had some killer songs as well! I played on some songs for Gabriela Guncikova, and we did Highway Star. Killer track...
Well done, amigo. You are a talent. Let's start a blues band. 6/8 into 4/4 into 7/8 into 12/8. Can we do it? Hahahaha!
Was waiting for this installment, and it was as great as I thought it would be. Just sayin’, if ever Ged & AL wanted to do a handful of dates…you know!😉🥁 Would love to see more of you behind the kit, in the studio setting, doing this kinda thing, or breaking down some of parts you’ve recorded over your pretty amazing career. Keep Rockin’ and keep it comin’!
Thanks so much Mark! I'll have to do that!! I do want to do some videos of how these tones were done with modern equipment. It was tough to match analogue with digital! (All this machinery making modern music and all, lol.)
@ I hear ya. Well, you did an absolute fantastic job getting similar tones, style, nuances…just brilliant. Btw, been a fan since the first HOL album.😉
@@MarkChocolate Wow, TY so much for your support over all these years!!
You're an incredible drummer and did a great job but the guitar solo section you didn't play accurately. Neil is rolling on the snare and hitting the china type and open high hat real fast NOT the China type and crash cymbals. And you left out the snare roll. If you want to be technically accurate. But incredible job!
Thank you for the kind words. My job was to get as close as possible to the record. That being said, I had one guy who challenged me saying this one part was played a different way, and he was wrong when we checked the recording. I was following the actual recording of the album, not what Peart did live later. He did change his parts slightly over time and you have to go by what is heard, not what he played live. Maybe go check the record and let me know...
Easy??? Ha!!! Not sure I'd categorize ANY of Peart's stuff as easy...Great job!!!
TY Jon. That's what some drummers had commented. I say, well, give it a shot matching to their tracks in one pass with no fixing, and let me know how easy it is, lol.
@@kenkmaryofficial Ya, and if it's easy, you're probably not playing it right . 🤣
@ True!!
IT'S TRUE!!! REINCARNATION IS REAL !!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Welcome back , Neil !
Hahahaha, that's very kind of you!!😆😆😆😆
We opened for you @The Alrosa Villa with Chastain. You offered to tune my drums for me, and I was like sure, and you played my kit. Was freaking out, and you were so cool to me. ! Think I was 19, I'm now 55 now, lol. Drummers always remember these things. You were scheduled to play Columbus Ohio with Flotz last year , I bought tiks show /tour was cancelled. Bummed. My son lives right across the street from that venue too. Damn.
Thanks so much for the kind words, and sorry we had to cancel those dates!! Thanks for supporting us over all these years!!🙏
Great job!
@ TY my friend!! 🙏
Grandios!👌👍🙏
I have been following your career since Raise Your Fist And Yell, superb work here Ken
TY so much Drew, and thank you for your support over these (insanely many) years!!😂
Wow!
TY Will!
Well done, Ken! 👏🙌
TY so much Glenn!!🙏
Another incredible display of your talent Ken!! 👏🏻👏🏻🥁🥁
TY so much!! 🙏
could you do a video on the gear (ride, crashes, etc), mics (distance, angles), recording info, etc?
That was planned. Plus I did two records with Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin) so I was going to show exactly how that sound was achieved… mics, placement, drums, etc.
Awesome...again Ken!
TY Dave!
Awesome job as always .I closed my eyes and it was just as if Neil were playing! Can't wait for the next one.
That’s the greatest compliment! TY so much!! 🙏
Fantastic, that middle section was spot on
TY so much, that was a bit of a challenge to lock to the existing tracks on that section! 👍
awesome as always Ken kicking it again
@@darylbanks6363 TY Daryl!! 🙏
Awesome!!!! Great job!
Ken, you'll crush it! 😁 🤙🤙
TY my friend! What could go wrong, right?? 😂
Hmmm...a cyborg take on The Professor? Can't wait! :P
Hahaha! Cyborg! I like that!😆
Tease! 😆 I'll be back!
Nice! TY for your patience!!

yes, since Neil is now / "no longer living but alive inside us all" i feel can play his music (even if i cant replicate it entirely yet..) i have been a avid listener of 50+years and have been practicing lately with the user Fiksdrumless's channel where he has stripped out drums on every rush album _ {just for my playing and practicing pleasure i am most assuredly so.?right} ps my first album was 2112 and i had the unique issue of :::: cracking the entire album in half "ALMOST" you see , from the center hole on the record all the way to the one of the edges it was separated _broken clean thru but still lined up groove for groove, did not skip, played fine... but with every rotation at 33 rpm came the ---what i once thought was---- an annoying click of that crack passing under the needle. -- 50+ years later that album and click is totally in my time keeping reproducible phrasing and its a pattern i have used often with odd time music is my own clock ticking away based off of that album and how much of an impression it made.. has lasted a lifetime.. cheers a toast of the Macallen for you
Yes, IMO he is one of the three most influential drummers of all time. If you were a drummer and alive in the late 70s and 80s, most likely he affected you directly or indirectly in some way!
Is this the same Ken Mary I heard when I was a kid on Chastain vinyls that my drum instructor had me listen to?
@@stoney5137 Yes, that would be me… 👍
YES!!! Awesome, Ken!!
TY so much Butch!! That is very kind of you!! 🙏
@kenkmaryofficial 💚
I've been playing RUSH for over 30 years. All I can say is "Thanks for the lesson!" Your drums sound amazing and your feel is spot on.
TY so much for the kind words!!🙏
That's damn good man 👏👏👏 I'm a 40+ year Rush fan and have heard this many times and your right there with it amazing job Neil would smile...
TY so much Kurt! That is very appreciated!!
Yesssss!!!!! Wonderful stuff!!
TY so much my friend!!
First listen thought you were off but second time around I thought you were on it.
Wow this is badass. RIP Neil. 🤟
