CV Split Boot Repair/Test
I noticed a CV boot had split on my vehicle. I have previously repaired the CV boot on the other side by removing the driveshaft. That was a bit of work as it was the first time doing a CV boot. I learnt a lot and could do the repair much quicker now.
But this time I liked the idea of trying a split CV boot that you do not need to remove the driveshaft. The boot has a split along its length and you open the split and put the boot over you driveshaft without any disassembly. Then glue the split together.
Much of the online chat do not like the split boot system due to not working, short longevity and not the "proper" way. This all seemed to be anecdotal and opinions. I did not find any fact...

Genuine cell phone battery vs ebay sourced "genuine" battery.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S and required an additional battery for a trip so I did not get caught out with a dead battery. I went to ebay for a additional battery..... I purchased a "genuine" Samsung battery from ebay. Now, I only paid £4.65 including postage, so was not expecting much. The ebay sourced battery is visually identical to the battery originally supplied with the phone. The Test: I c...

Team K&R test their new Toyo R888 SG's and they are good. We ran standard road tyres before and the R888's are in a completely different league and for £45 each, good value too. They have massive amounts of grip and when you do go past their limits they slip in a progressive manner unlike our previous tryes that when the limit was reached just let go of the track completely. E30 325i Gearbox removal(NOT INSTRUCTIONS)
I have one almost identical. It looks like a nightmare due to the tiny tongue fit you had to work with!
Very impressive glue strength 😮😅
Is there a purchase link to that boot?
Was the split boot universal or different sizes available by vehicle specified?
Hi, it was a universal fit with no vehicle specified. The sizes the boot covered was on the sales page. You just cut off the smaller end until you get to the size you require. On the one I purchased. In the video I have already cut the smaller sections off the boot.
Hi. Any update after 4 months ?
Hi, I just checked and the CV boot does look like it is leaking some grease slightly from the seam that is glued together. It's not much but it is leaking. I will clean it off and take a closer look at the weekend.
Wheres the fluid going? Is there a common leak point?
Hi, I'm not sure where the fluid is going. Everything seems dry. I'm not aware of any common leak point. The boot/tail lift is still working today and six years on from my video. So whatever is happening to the fluid is very slow in my case. :)
@@ricointheuk The pump was fixed and not moving. I fixed it, but a problem appeared. It opens and raises, but does not respond at all to closing.
on the earlier oil comments . power steering fluid or transmission oil are both hydraulic oils and would prob. work. the red fluid would be easy to see in resevoir.
what type of glue? where from, the split boots from Ali don't come with glue
Hi, the glue came with the CV boot kit. I just checked the glue and it's in a generic white tube without a brand name. The kit I purchased from Amazon UK was the Bailcast CVS18 Splitboot.
if there is no gimmicks, that glue strength is impressive,,,
I was impressed with the strength on my test piece too. It did break at the joint but took part of the rubber from the other side of the joint. So seems plenty strong enough. We'll see if it lasts the test of time and weather!
Thanks for your video. I was able to fix this issue in 10 mins with clear instructions. Appreciated.
Does anyone know where this pump is located in the same year R class?
Is the hydraulic pump at the same location for a 2013 Mercedes gl450?? I’m having a hard time finding it, and I’ve gone through the steps in the video already.
I am surprised to see that MB did not make access possible only from under the trunk just to make it more difficult to fill oil. Oil does not evaporate, yet could not see a trace of leaked oil, so where does the leaked oil !
Ska fylla på min med. Går inte hela vägen upp.
What fluid has gone in
Hi Kaisar, I found a Mercedes document that said the fluid had to match MB 342.0 hydraulic fluid. The document gave a compatible fluid which was Aeroshell 41. I bought it from Amazon but it is available from lots of other outlets. Hope it works for you. :)
Good deal, mine has stopped going all the way up so I will check this tomorrow.
Hi mglsite, hope it worked out for you :)
Good video but I’m concerned about putting the collar on and taking it off every night how long the tube coupling will hold out for before getting worn out ?
Damn I found this video on something totally unrelated to what I’m looking for but I’ve been wondering what the Hells been wrong with my hatch for a year now I want to head and added your video to my playlist on On my Benz
Hi Vitiated, hope it fixed your hatch. :)
Great 👍
Thank you!!! My ML63 pump was whining and grinding from cavitation. I found the pump reservoir dry with no single drop. So I added Mercedes hydraulic steering fluid and its smooth and quiet.
Hi Faiz, I'm glad the video helped. :)
Very informative video! Gonna try this! Thanks for sharing!
Excellent vid. I was wondering where this pump was! One question (and hopefully you're still reviewing comments on this vid), was there a need to prime the pump or bleed it to get out any air bubbles? I saw that mentioned on a forum but didn't see you do this and wouldn't know how to do this w/o some instructions. Thanks!
Hi William :) I did not need to bleed the pump and did not find any instructions indicating I should for my car model(Does not mean that there are some instruction somewhere and I should have bleed the pump). I presume my pump dragged air in as I had so little fluid remaining that the boot/tailgate would not open when parked on a slope. After adding the oil it worked fine and is still working great to this day.
What is that Bosch thing for, level?
Hi Abdullah :) Yes, the Bosch laser level was to just check the pump was level for the fluid reading. Probably over the top as I would guess the pump reservoir being exactly level is not that critical but I had the Bosch laser level close, and it took the guess work out of the situation.
Good on you for taking the time to make this video mate. It was very helpful. Good karma to you
Brilliant, simple review. Thanks for sharing this. Just wondering how the collars are doing, now they're a couple of years old
Hi :) Thank you for the comment. The dog collars are still working well. They only come out over the dark winter months each year. I purchased them in 2015. In short, I am still pleased with them :)
i had to hit the M key to stop the"noise" very easy to change this filter< thanks for the video;
my power steering is hard and i just bought a replacement and still hard to drive .... i am confused
Hi, my power lift gate does not operate at all, it beeps though when I press open. Also the red light in the open/close does not light. Any idea what's wrong?
Hi Car Craze, no sorry I do not. But I would start with checking fuses and seeing if power is getting to the pump etc.
@@ricointheuk it turned out to be broken wires at the liftgate pump that was rotten due to water infiltration
Did you end up replacing the whole actuator?
@@Fleeceist it turned out to be the wires connecting to liftgate pump were rotten and broken off due to water seepage
Okay thanks. Mine opens but it wont close. The latch stays active and wobt go back to normal though MB wants 950 just for 20 dollar latch haha. Might as well replace the actuator and the latch for that price.
Did you every find the leak?, thanks for posting. Just bought ML with problem hatch... it will close but not open.
Hi ZaphodsPlanet, No, I never found a leak. Although I have not really looked as the tailgate/boot has continued to work since I refilled the tank around one year ago. Hope you enjoy your ML.
Want to add this video saved me from disabling the system and converting to manual. The tailgate would open fully with no problem but when closing it would bounce (kind of drop), stop, return to full open, and beep. I added fluid as the reservoir was nearly empty. Now, I may have a leak and time will tell, but in the meantime this is a fix. On my 2011 W164, there isn't a line, just a circle and when filled to the circle with the unit upright (vertical, reservoir on top), the system operates properly. As others have stated, Aircraft Spruce carries Aeroshell 41, a fluid that passes mercedes 342.0 fluid specs for this hydraulic system. If this does not fix the issue (long term) I intend to disable the auto tailgate and convert it to manual, as per a handy fcp euro blog.
Pleased to hear the video helped. Hopefully it is a long term fix for you. Mine still work fine and it is nearly a year since I made the video.
djbh2009 I had similar problem with my 2012 ML350. When opening the tailgate, it will bounce a couple of times before fully open. But no problem to close it. Should I change the fluid as you did?
1. Thanks for researching the replacement fluid - useful info. Aircraft spruce seems to carry aeroshell 41. I am sure there are other suitable hydraulic oils - the mercedes oil has a peculiar stink to it and is very low viscosity. 2. Looking at the way the pump works I don't think there really is a maximum level - it is basically a piston pump driven by an eccentric cam. Sure fill it to the level but I don't think going over would affect anything. The pump is fed through a shaft in the middle of the housing so that is the critical level 3. The common failure is the connectors corrode - clean with contact cleaner and put some white lithium grease on them. Grease everything and the motor pump should last for a long time. Shame on mercedes for such crap execution - they stuck it in a foam condom at the bottom of the trunk, what did they expect? 4. Regarding cleaning the pump of 'dried residue'. its a hydraulic pump! There will be no 'dried residue'. Sure take it apart if you are curious - be careful when you remove the bronze pump body, it is full of tiny hardened pins that will disappear forever when they fall on the floor. Disassemble over a suitably deep dish. There is a solenoid valve and some very small o-rings and that is about it. 4. In answer to Marco, the passenger rear contains the fusebox and SAM - the SAM is prone to death because water leaks through the rear lens and shorts the circuit board. typical modern mercedes - no conformal coating even though there is no justification - it is all low power. They could have put it in a sealed box but no and these things have been dying in this manner for 10+ years. In the u.s. the box is 400 delivered new, in Canada they give you a 'refurbed' one for 950$ and the core is 350$. And they will insist on programming it whether it needs it or not (mine did not). Jerks
we all seem to have a similar experience with Benz ownership... low quality serviced by jerks. No other car fall apart as well as German cars. Thank god for Japanese cars 😎
can you do a more indepth review on whats inside the rear corepanels in both side and besides under the fluid pump
So was the gate not closing or opening before you added hydrulic fluid? What was the cause that led you to check that particular pump, thanks in advanced.
Hi iBow2no1TX :) the issue I was experiencing was that the gate worked normally on flat ground but failed to open on a slope with the vehicle noise facing down hill. The slope only needed to be slight for the gate not to lift. I noticed that the gate never worked whenever I went to the rubbish tip where you back up to the skips on a slight slope. I then tested the vehicle on different slopes to confirm. The gate is still working well after adding the fluid.
@@ricointheuk My ml550 is showing similar symptoms, I'm going to check the fluid level today
@@tippy35075 any luck?
ricointheuk yes so I need to get some mercedes Benz steering fluid next week to top the hydraulic tank up
@@tippy35075 is power steering fluid similar enough?
Great Video! This is a big secret at Mercedes. Thank you for sharing the location.
You're welcome :)
What was the problem that led to this?
Hi Jun Mic :) Hopefully I have understood your question correctly. If you are asking what the problem was that reduced the fluid level then I do not know. There does not appear to be any leak visible and boot opened fine unless I was on a slope. My basic understanding is that the hydraulic system is a closed system, so it has gone somewhere. The car is 11 years old so maybe 11 years of normal seal leakage accounts for this??? although nothing shows. But I have not dismantled the car to check the entire system. The boot still works fine. I should look in the boot again to see if the fluid level has moved from the video fill level. Next time I work on the car I will take a look. ;)

volts X (times) amps = watts
:) It's good to have real people on you tube.. all the best to you mate
Hi Alan :) Embarrassingly no. My excuse is that we had no previous car knowledge and had an overheat problem which eventually turned out to be the head. We put the intake on the bonnet to try and help with the overheat(not knowing about the head). Although this obviously turned out not to help, it did help us become very popular on the track days as everyone wanted to know what it was and came to talk to us LOL. Worked out well as we met some great people :)
Is that a turbo intake on that bonnet???
i have a question, have you measured the voltage coming off the two terminal on the main board, which is responsible for turning off the unit after you open the back assembly. Mine only has 3.2V coming off, i don't think that's enough to charge the battery which needs to be more than 4v. But the funny thing is, this unit is able to turn on if I plug in a wall charger, but that's only in charging mode.
I replace my SGS2 original battery (1650mAH) with $7 ebay battery (2100mAH ). It last 2x longer than the original and produce less heat. My SGS2 usually only have 20% battery life when I finish work. With new ebay battery, I still have a whooping 75% battery remaining.

I stumbled across your video looking for R888 videos. I'm planning to get a set of dedicated track wheels and these tires to run instead of the RE-11's I ran for both street and track last year. The look like a good deal. Great driving guys!
