Here are some things I brought back from a recent trip to the US. I always wondered what I would miss when living abroad and here are some of those items! Hope these can help give you an idea of things we cannot find in France easily or maybe give you some ideas for gifts for those living abroad! 🎁 #giftideas #lifeabroad #carepackage #lifeinfrance #frenchlife #expatlife

Language Levels in France and other European Countries

Here’s a quick explanation of French Language levels. This scale is used in a lot of European countries, but I haven’t seen it used in the US. Your language level can vary depending on whether you're evaluating reading, writing, speaking, or oral comprehension. I'm currently a B1-B2 level depending on what I'm being evaluated on. Do you know your language level? Let me know if you have any ques...

How long will it keep for, im wanting to try this bit id like a decent shelf life. Fridge life?
I’ve kept mine for at least 6 months in the fridge!
Hello thank you for your video, I have a couple of questions though specifically about the documents you submitted, I can provide all of those but on ANTS it asks for "Attestation de droits à conduire datant de moins de 3 mois" does this just mean my driving record? because I'm not sure how to get this written statement from the dmv. Thank you!
Hi! It’s hard to remember now, but I think I just used my driving record from my dmv. Good luck!
Hello ma'am. Just wondering what were your final scores for EO and EE.. Merci.
Hi! I don’t have my exact number scores, but I scored B1 in each category. Hope this helps!
@expatpasexpert IIn the last part of the EO, did you speak the whole 3 and half minutes without a pause or was it an interaction? Thank you so much. Your video gave me a bit of ease.😊
@@lanaLUCAS1926 It was an interaction. The person was so nice. It was like going to a store and trying to interact with a sales person to buy a new phone.
Thank you so much for this! My appointment is coming up and I was really nervous not knowing what I was walking into. SO appreciate this 🙏
So glad it could help! 😘 Feel free to check out some of my other OFII or general French life videos. I try to make content that I wish I could have found before certain situations! 😂
Hi there, thanks for the video. I recently moved to France with a Visitor long-stay visa. I arrived in later July 2024. I registered my visa in early August. I have waited for 3 months and haven't received the letter from OFII for a medical exam. Can I ask whether your visa is different from mine? how long normally does it take to get the appointment from OSII after registration? Thanks in advance.
I’ve seen the time vary from 1 or two months to more than 6. French administration is a beast that no one seems to have figured out. 😂 I’m here under a family visa, but I don’t think that makes a difference in the time it takes for them to contact you. Your first letter is actually just to take the French test. The medical exam is usually later. Hope this helps!
@@expatpasexpert Thank you so much for your response! I feel a little easy now. I will have to wait patiently.
@LaVivien So happy to help! Good luck!!!
Thanks for sharing. I am preparing TCF now and your experience helped a lot.
So glad to hear it! Good luck!!!
Haha looking for something else and you popped up. After a couple of days on the counter than a couple of days in the fridge I dumped out most of the salty liquid and add acid and sugar.. I don't use white vinegar I find it too stringent we use that for cleaning plates. Apple cider vinegar and your favorite herbs a little bit of sugar you have pickles that have been fermented they don't just taste salty..
That’s a good idea. I found that the fermentation created that vinegar taste without needing to add any. ☺️
Hi, I was hoping we could have a quick conversation. Let me know when you’re available.
Merci beaucoup pour votre vdo🙏🙏🙏
Je vous en prie ☺️

I just wanted to take a moment to express how much I appreciate your content. As your top fan, I make it a point to watch your videos as soon as the notifications come through, and they truly brighten my day! I noticed it's been a couple of weeks since your last upload, and I felt compelled to reach out since comments are the only way to contact you. Your video editing, sound quality, and overall presentation are fantastic! However, I believe a few enhancements could help your channel reach a wider audience. If you’re interested, I can share my observations in the comments, or if you'd prefer a more direct conversation, I’d be happy to connect with you privately. I genuinely believe these tweaks could help your channel grow even more! Looking forward to your response!
Hi, I have my exam next Wednesday but haven’t been sent a manual. Your link below isn’t working for me. I don’t suppose you know of an alternative please?
I’m sorry! I guess it’s not current now. Try this site for more info: www.france-education-international.fr/en/test/tcf-tout-public?langue=en
I’ll see if I can find another version of the manual!
@@expatpasexpert Thankyou. Knowing there was a manual out there, I found it with the help of google. Can I ask more about the exam please? For the oral comprehension, are the possible answers visible during the listening part? Or are they hidden until after the listening part is finished? Tcf had them visible and I now worry that this is the wrong way For the written expression, do you need to know the imparfait, conditional, futur proche etc? For the oral expression, the part which totally terrifies me, how hard is it really? My biggest issue is that I don’t leave the house very often due to anxiety and I’m going to have to travel to this exam on my own, to a place I’ve never been and then need to speak to a stranger. Even if this exam was in English, I can see I’d still struggle BTW, how did you do in the exam?
Hi there :) this appointment was made during the same day of the French level test or is another day?
That would be too easy! 😂 Unfortunately, it’s not scheduled till later, and you find out the date through the mail (the same way you’ll find out the date of the initial appointment through the mail).
I don’t need to make an appointment? The web says they don’t accept walk-ins
Nope. You need an appointment for a regular passport, but for an emergency passport, you do not make an appointment. You just walk in during the morning.
Greek 'yoghurt'? Doesnt exist.😅 It is yoghurt and its Turkish, coming from the Turkish tribes in East-Asia . Even the name is Turkish. Yoghurt is a Turkish word coming from 'yoģurma'.

You could! My anxiety could never, but if you can, go for it!!! 😂😂😂
Hi Rebecca.. Thanks so much for the quick response I am on the same page. Very anxious. I am going to get there when they open on the same day of my flight. Luckily my flight is at midnight.
@@SantiagoNoguera-tq8eqOh, then you should be fine! We were shocked to get ours an hour after we arrived! They really were so helpful! Best of luck!!!
Thank you so much! This is so helpful. I had a few questions about the mechanics. (1) How do you monitor the time? Is there a timer on the computer? Should I have a stopwatch, or is that even allowed? (2) For the oral comprehension portion, can you see the questions before hearing the audio? (3) Do you have more than one question for each audio clip? [BTW Thank you for the TV Monde 5 tip. Very helpful] Also, are you given paper and pencil to make notes such as to remember facts [dates/numbers, etc] from the audio clips or is that not even an issue? I have a DELF B1 practice book and the audio passages are long [at least for my slow brain] ;-).
Glad it was helpful! 1. The computer will show you how much time you have left in each section. I doubt they would allow a stopwatch, but you won’t need one. 2. Yes, you will have a few seconds to start reading the answers before you hear the audio. 3. No. Each audio clip has a separate question. I believe you can use paper if you need to, but I wouldn’t recommend it because you won’t really have time. The one thing I wish I had done more of was practice typing on a French keyboard to be more comfortable with that, but I still had plenty of time to finish the written portion. Hope this helps! Good luck!!!
I haven’t practiced in the DELF book, but the TV5 Monde app was so helpful. I felt very prepared after doing all of the practice tests! 😅
@@expatpasexpert all good advice. Thanks!
Thank you so much. I was wondering what the pricing was and couldn't find that out anywhere.
No problem! 😊
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I agree with you about the French administration attitude towards foreigners, I lived in many countries and I have never experienced this before, which is really sad.

If you come back to America, can you get it turned back into your American license?
Yes, I’m not sure how that works, but your state would still have your driving record so I’m sure you would just go to your local DMV and get them to pull the driving record and create a new license. ☺️
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO GET YOUR MEDICAL APPOINTMENT SET UP AND WHAT IS THE PROCESS? HELP
Hi! The Medical visit is scheduled by OFII. I got the letter with the date for that appointment right after I finished my Formation Civique classes. I think that was just a coincidence, but as long as you’ve registered your visa, you will get a letter telling you when your appointment will be. Hope this helps, and check out my other OFII videos if you haven’t taken the Formation Civique classes! Good luck!
Hello, I have my TCF scheduled next week and i'm nervous like you said. Do they check for grammer to the core in expression ecrit and expression orale? If you dont mind, can you say if you just prepared for the exam or you did any french language course to take up the exam? In my case, i just learnt using youtube and online content. I'm able to understand, speak and write a bit but dont know if it is enough for B1 level. I'm sure you would have got B1 but share us the result to boost our hope and confidence. Thank you :)
Hi! I did pass! 🥳 I took classes through Greta as well as some through a local nonprofit, but honestly, the app and practice tests were the biggest help. If you can score well on those, the test is actually easier in my opinion! There are 17, so do them all if you can and time yourself to practice answering quickly. Best of luck!!!
I hate constant interruptions whilst I eat. They always come over to ask if you're enjoying the meal or want something...just as you have your mouth full. Pestering me wins a SMALLER TIP !

Glad to help! It’s why I made these videos because I couldn’t find much online! 😅 Good luck!
Hi
Hello! 👋
HI, thx for the video. Can you tell how many tracks are there to listen in the 'comprehension orale', and how many lang. structure questions? Are these included in overall 20 questions, or they come after? Also, do you know anything about the paper-based exam, i can't really choose. I 've read everything, so have some idea, but maybe details to consider...? like in a paper-based ex you can omit the question if you didn't have enough time to read the 4 options after the track, and come back later. Or other similar things...
Hi! Glad you liked it! The compréhension orale has 20 questions to listen to. There are no language structure questions on the TCF IRN, but other TCF exams include a separate section with those. You can only listen to each track one time, so I think it would be hard to remember and come back to a question on a paper exam. The written portion and the compréhension écrite sections allow you to skip around between questions. The only real difficulty I found on the computer based was trying to type on the French keyboard, but I ended up with plenty of time for the writing portion in the end. The word count for the questions is pretty short (40-60 words). Hope this helps! ☺️
She sounds east Texan. My take on this is that a Noisette is very similar to a Cortado. Neither of which anybody in the states knows how to make. 🤦🏻♂️
Hah, I’m from South Carolina. I think a Cortado is slightly milkier. This is really just a drop of milk in the noisette, but it would be interesting to try them side by side! Also depends where you’re drinking it because no café is the same 😂
@@expatpasexpert I'm usually the one making them, and I'm probably doing them all "wrong"! hehe. But I like my way better than most "barristas". For one, I pull my espresso *directly into the cup*, so no crema is lost (that's my favorite part of espresso!). Then for Ckeilah's Cortado I just plop a plop of half&half in there--just enough to cut the bitterness, but nowhere near as milky as a cappuccino. <3
Yum! Sounds like a noisette! 😊
@@expatpasexpert We'll have to meet up when I sail past South Carolina and compare coffee cocktails! Happy May Day! ;-)
I’m in France now, but always down to talk coffee! 😂 It’s Labor Day here, so happy Labor Day! 😊
Thank you so much, I’m French in the US but was wondering how can I do translate my US driver license to French for not paying 3k€ for making my drivers licence in France 😂
Haha now you know! I had a student who was thinking of taking her driving test in the US, and I highly encouraged her to do it to save so much time and money!!! 😅 Which state are you in because some won’t translate unfortunately!
Hello! Great video thank you very much. I've got my TCF IRN in Tours (37) tomorrow afternoon. Just wondering about the French culture questions - you know - the things we studied during the 4 different classes inc Health Care System , Education, Logement, Emploi etc - were these included in the first 2 sections of the test or not at all? Eg Marseillaise signification, Valeurs FR, Emblemes etc? I'm British / my second time around in France : )
Thank you! There weren’t any questions directly related to anything learned in Formation Civique. It really just feels like a conversation so one will be an interaction at a store and the other will just be your opinion on a topic of the interviewer’s choice. Hope this helps and good luck!!! 😊
@@expatpasexpert Yes, confirm = my TCF IRN was all about the 4 skills (listening exercises, reading / comprehension, writing followed by 3 speaking exercises 1-1 with one of the officials. No mention of or testing how much info from the 4 courses had been absorbed. No mention of les poilus etc! Seemed to go very well. Results due in approx 3 weeks. Bring it on!
Nice! Hope you get it! 🎉😊
Thanks again for doing these. Just a guess, as a person who knows very little about policy in France. Maybe they don't do the classes online for 2 reasons. They haven't built the infra-structure; it looks like, as an outsider, that France is both heavy on bureaucracy (I wonder where that word come from? 🙂) and very heavy on paper documentation that can be presented and examined for review. And the second reason being the "integration" part; to socialize the newcomers both to make connections with fellow "foreigners" and to have them in proximity to French people (sort of a recurring cocktail party experience). I'd been having a hard time finding info on those classes. So now I've seen your parts 1 and 2, but I guess I'll have to find a pre-1 to figure out both a) who has to take these classes b) who is eligible. And c) what does having taken them change a person's status from. Like; it means you're out of what category, and now part of what other category. So these questions are not necessarily directed at you--I'm just investigating. On one of the visa sites, it mentioned "integration classes," so then I looked that up, just to need THEN find out what the French language name of the classes was, THEN I had to look into "is there any info out there-NOT directed at a refugee process." So, just a piecemeal journey. Switching countries is weird when it's sort not one of the big three; -emergency -education -family After that, all the info falls apart/scattered.
Thanks for the info. Can't wait to look further into your channel and see how things progressed for you over the year.
Thank you for your kind comment, and thanks for watching! 🥰
When do we receive the carte de séjour or "pr card"?
You have to apply for that within the first year of having your visa at least 3 months before it expires. You must do this at your nearest prefecture, and once you submit everything, it takes a month or two to get your carte de séjour. They will give you a temporary one to show that you have applied and are waiting on the permanent card. Hope this helps!
After you mailed in your U.S. driver's license, did the FR government eventually mail you your new French DL? If yes, how long did that take? Thank you!
Yes! I got my French driver’s license in the mail a few weeks later. Maybe 2? It seemed quicker than I expected. Hope this helps! 😊
It will get purple color add lemon after pouring hot water .
Thanks! 😂 I tried another time and got the purple color. This was just so funny to me. 😅
I will have to disagree about the ANTS website being really easy to use - they have 2 ways to authenticate 1) The ANTS account 2) using a FranceConnect account. I have French Nationality through marriage but it seems that acquired nationality (vs born in France) does not put you in the system, technically registered in the 'base d’état civil de l’INSEE', which is essentially the social security database which is then tied to the carte Vitale (health care card). So when i signed up for the FranceConnect account i keep getting a E010008 error which I believe is because I have not lived in France yet and am not in their social security database. I have created an ANTS account in the meantime however they state that many requests can only be done with a FranceConnect account. My question is since I already have the nationality do you know what they would accept as proof of living in France. We have a house in France and i am on the EDF (electricy) account which would serve as proof of residence but i'm not sure what they would require as proof of principal residence? Just to complain about the ANTS website even more - their contact us by formulaire/email is a joke since it doesn't send any requests - you have to state what your general question is and then it directs you to a FAQ webpage. They don't have any email address that you can send a request to either. I'm happy that your experience was positive! I certainly would appreciate any more videos like this one.
Yikes! Sorry you’re having so much trouble! You can use your EDF bill as proof of residence, but the justicatif de residence normal will be harder if you’re not currently living here. Do you have your French passport? Have you taken OFII courses and signed your CIR? That could be used. As far as ANTS, it’s an app on your phone you can use to take a photo. I didn’t use the website. You only need it here for the photo numérique, but I’m sure there are other ways to get a photo numérique. Hope this helps!!!
@@expatpasexpert I do have the French Passport and the national identity card. I haven't taken the OFII course - i don't think it would apply since I already have the French citizenship so I don't think i would be considered a foreign national. When i started the application there was actually no requirement for knowledge of the French language, but during the 4-5 years after marriage that you have to wait to apply for the nationality they introduced that applicants needed I think a B1 level in French. Again I don't think I need the CIR either since i should be considered a French National. I guess i can try to contact them on the phone - my experience with general 1st level help desk and out-of-the-ordinary situations usually leads to incorrect information. Thanks for your info and help!
Interesting! How long ago did you get your citizenship? Yes, you need a B1 and none of the OFII courses or CIR should apply. I know what you mean about getting incorrect information. I think that comes from all levels here! 😂🙃 Good luck!
I think I got the nationality at the end of 2015 - its interesting that on the nationality acceptance you are 'born' in France at the same time you are born in your native country. If your mother says she had an out of body experience when giving birth it might explain it. I think i will shelve this idea for now since I am more based in Canada at the moment, i guess when there is a time I am based in France i'll re-visit the experience - maybe by that time i will have had an answer from FranceConnect about their error. Thanks for your help.@@expatpasexpert
Hi i just wanted to know what about vacation during summer how does that work do we go to school even in those months?
Hi! Good question! At your initial meeting with OFII, they will offer you dates for Formation Civique. If the dates don’t work for you, you can ask for different dates. Mine happened to be during the summer. We were busy getting settled after the move, so we weren’t traveling at the time. It was every Friday for about three weeks (with a week or two break in there) and then the last date was scheduled for the following week on a Friday. Hope this helps!
Additionally, if you’re working, this is an excusable absence and your work is required to let you go. You would just show them the letter with your Formation Civique dates.
I’m so sorry! That’s really stressful! I would definitely keep calling and try different times of the day (never at lunch 😜). Did you get an initial email after you registered and paid for your visa online within the 3 months after you arrived?
My father name is mistake in in my Nepali license how to convert in to french
Your father’s name is incorrect on your license? As in your nom famille or last name? If it’s just his name that is incorrect and not yours, I don’t think it would be a problem to get it exchanged for a French license. Hope this helps. Good luck!
Thank You for sharing
Thanks for watching! ☺️
Thank you for this wonderful video. I, too, am an American married to a Frenchman and now living in Saumur, France. I have a meeting scheduled March 4th. There are several videos online showing what the language test is like. I'm wondering if you've seen them and could tell me which is the most similar to the sort of test you were given. Thanks so much!
Hi! Sorry I’m just seeing this! I hope your meeting and test went well. Honestly, I wouldn’t have recommended you do anything to really practice because if your level is low, you want them to note that so that you are offered more help without having to pay for it! 😊
Hi! Ive been waiting for my first appointment since july and my visa expires on may ive been so nervous. Ive been trying to call and sending emails and no response 😢 Do you have any advice that I can do?
How sweet! Those Frenchies. You have to watch out for them! 😉😂 Bon courage!
Hello!! Just curious, how did you immigrate from US to France😀😀😀
Hi! My husband is French, so I came over under a family visa. I have some videos on my immigration experience if you’re interested! 😊
@@expatpasexpert Oh I see!! Are the immigration videos on your channel?
@@Milkedsplooge Yes, they're the OFII videos. They explain the initial language test and medical visit. Are you moving to France?
@@expatpasexpert Hello, I am somewhat interested. Perhaps I’m jumping the gun but I did meet a girl living in France during my travels and we hit it off quite well and one thing led to another so I’m just exploring😁😁.
What kind of papers do you take to the radiography appointment?
If I remember correctly, it was just the letter they mailed to me. I just had to show them the letter with my appointment information. Hope this helps!
Great questions! We scheduled the 4th class on the third class day. It was scheduled for the next week. It didn’t give us much notice. We signed the CIR on our final day of class, and I used it when renewing my two year visa. You want to hang on to all of the paperwork. I just took everything with me to the prefecture in case they asked me for anything not listed (which they often do here 😑). Hope this helps! ☺️
Thank you for your reply; I appreciate your help and kindness. Is the CIR necessary for the two years? I thought it's only for the 10-year one based on the site; interesting. Also, is the 2-year application online or offline? Thanks!
I’m not sure if the CIR is required, but any proof that you have that you have taken or are taking the OFII classes is important to show when reapplying which unfortunately has to be done in person at your local prefecture. Mine was scheduled and it went very quickly. Good luck!
Hello Rebecca! Thanks for the informative video. I'm wondering about the gap between the 3rd class and the 4th one. Were you able to schedule it very soon? Also, after the OFII interview, was your CIR signed? I noticed mine only has my signature. Additionally, did you need the CIR for the first residency card, or is it only required for the 10 years one? Thanks! 😀
Thank you for your help 🎉
You're welcome 😊
Thank you for sharing your experience as I will have to go to OFFI - my first time in a couple of days. I have a question on the language level test. Did you find it difficult? What would be your advice for me to prepare myself? Merci beaucoup.
Hi! You’re welcome! The language test wasn’t difficult, but I wouldn’t really prepare for it. If you need a higher level, they will offer you courses free or charge through Greta. If your level is very low, you will be required to take the classes. A2 is the level you need in order to not be required and the class you would take is B1. Just try to relax and do your best because free help is better than paid help! 😊
