This song title and opening lyrics are a play on those sappy commercials that used to air where the woman is looking kind of demuree and the man is a bit smirking but saying his wife makes good dinners and keeps up the home, “my wife: I think I’ll keep her” So in the chorus it explains all that she did to be a perfect housewife and mother. Over the years she came to realize that she didn’t love him (he likely never really appreciated her). For me as the song progresses it becomes more like “he thinks he”ll herp her, but can’t “

The only one on there to not win CMA Female Vocalist of the Year is Suzy Boggus (she did win Horizon Award in 1992). Kathy Mattea, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Trisha Yearwood all won twice. That’s 9 years of female vocalist winners on that stage.

Another thanx to You Tube for this great live performance by Mary chapin Carpenter, my favotite female recording artist of the 90s. And thats in any musical genre.

Bit of a ‘chip on the shoulder’ attitude by MCC, since she detested that smug commercial where the guy said (of his wife): I think I’ll keep her. Still, it’s an amazing song, with the terrific ensemble of harmony singers, each of whom could fill an arena by themself. Certainly makes the studio version sound drab, though, huh?
