Dickhead | 2-minute short film
An Aussie bloke just wants to live a normal life despite being rejected by society because of his, er, defect.
This was a ridiculous little short film I shot over a weekend with some friends back in 2016. While my tastes and skills have definitely improved as a filmmaker, I feel the message is still unfortunately as relevant today as it was then.

After 6 years overseas (Amsterdam & Toronto), I've moved back to Sydney. This a little BTS video from my first portrait shoot back in Australia with director Zac Lynch-Woodlock. Please excuse the rather low quality footage. This was filmed on a 20 year old Panasonic Mini DV camera which I brought for Zac to hold as a prop. You know, as he's a director and all. Big headshot job lighting test in my tiny apartment

UPDATE: here are the final shots. www.tristanviney.com/teams/cority Truthfully, I was a little nervous going into this corporate headshot job. While I was very confident in my ability to shoot some clean, shadowless headshots on a white background, it's not the kind of image I'm hired to create. My work tends to be a lot... moodier. What I've learned after my first 3 PAID portrait shoots

I'm hardly an expert after shooting my first 3 paid portrait shoots. In fact, there's probably not a lot I can teach anyone about how to be a professional photographer at this stage in my journey. How I accidentally became a professional portrait photographer
I am a software engineer and the engineering design seems so intuitive across all disciplines of engineering.
Sounds like you’d fit right in!
Excellent work.
Thank you so much! Appreciate you checking out our little film from a few years back!
Are you using FOC for torque/amp distribution to the motors?
Hey Chris! Great question. Truthfully, I have no idea. I'm a filmmaker and the details of EDL's WAL-LE build went straight over my head. But out of curiosity, do you think they used FOC?
First rate. A+++double plus
So glad you enjoyed our film! Thanks for watching ✌
i can work wiht us??
Thanks for checking out the video! I’m the filmmaker who made it. Reach out to EDL directly. You can their contact details on their website - www.engdesignlab.com
Welcome back Tristan! 😊
Cheers, Tony! Great to be back.
Sounds like a really fun company. Are you hiring?
Can confirm EDL is an amazing company. The team Tomek assembled are incredibly talented and passionate about their work. It's was honestly a joy to spend time with them while shooting these videos. If you're serious, reach out to the team (I'm just the filmmaker who made this). You can find the contact info on their website - www.engdesignlab.com
lets ignore everything ever learnt about off-road vehicles bc we are the avengers.
What a great video! The direction and photography are fantastic!
Thanks a bunch, Riccardo! The team’s passion and general excitement about their work made my job significantly easier.
Electric vehicles are not better for the environment because making battles and extra mining causes cO2 emissions equivalent to running a gas car for 4 years.
Thanks for taking the time to drop a comment!
Best part of this were the toes, tbh. JK, pretty cool seeing your BTS as usual;. can't say i miss tearing my apartment apart to get shoots in but quite the vicarious adventure.
Thanks for the feedback. I’ll have to up the toes-per-video count for the next one. I honestly can’t wait for the day I have my own studio space. Setting up and tearing down constantly is soooooo time consuming.
Wowza man cool video! I was looking for someone to shoot my vids and your advice really helps! Btw, where are you from?
Stoked to hear you found it helpful! I'm an Australian currently living in Canada. Best of luck with your vids!

Impressive but just a side note, never use screw terminals on a moving vehicule, use clamp terminals like Wago, its faster to wire and much more reliable when you have vibration.
Cheers for the insight! I’ll pass it onto the EDL team 💪
@@tristan_viney But do not forget to tell them they do a great job too 🙂
Will do! We also just finished shooting another video together last week, so I'll be chatting to the team again soon :)
I would make moonlander rover type suspension doble arms on 3 hindges
Oh interesting. How would this improve WAL-LE? Explain it to me like I’m a filmmaker 😂
@@tristan_viney improve handling crawling capabilities its best crawling driveline
Oh cool! I can see how that could be helpful. Thanks! (again, non engineer here) 🙌
@tristan_viney ye i guess im self schooled eng.
loved the project
So glad to hear! The team did an awesome job. It was a lot of fun to film the process.
Those ice picks aren't going to allow you to climb anything, you'll need something that can more effectively drag the vehicle forwards. Perhaps add a rotating pick assembly to the arms as the wheels won't grip ice at even a small angle from within water, especially not once you start adding a payload.
I think you're onto something with the rotating assembly. If you're going to embrace an industrial safety nightmare, you might as well be sure it works 😉
Thanks for taking the time to share this idea! I’ll pass it onto the EDL team who built WAL-LE 💪
@@tristan_viney My pleasure, look forward to seeing the vehicle progress :-)
6:08 No need to get testy. Short tempered Canadians, eh?
No such thing as a testy Canadian 😂
Canadian ingeneering, excellent!!!
🇨🇦🙌
0 emissions unless it catches fire and burns for 16 hours !!!!!!!
WAL-LE is too cute to go down in flames like that 😂🔥
@@tristan_vineyFWIW, there are automatic extinguisher systems for UTVs, that might be a worthwhile inclusion or inspiration here.
That could be handy! I’ll pass it onto the team (I’m just a guy with a camera 😂)
The default really should have been skid steer. Watching it spin a single tire is making my skin crawl. They may have done away with differentials, but should not have done away with differential lockers. See quad- versus dual-motor testing in Rivians, Swin-car ATV, and "chainlink" rock crawler, for further reference. Also, outriggers are always helpful on boats, especially if they're funky ones like this! I bet some actuators like on the ice axes would also support retractable outrigger floats.
Super interesting insights. I’ll let the team know 💪
@@tristan_vineyThat's a mighty kind response to a stranger grousing at you on the Internet 😊. Looking again, by the time the ice picks were installed, it appears they may have already addressed the issue of driving all the wheels... Maybe 😉... In the shot of it getting onto the rock, it looks like the fronts are maybe spinning in unison, but not faster than the rear 🤔 9:04 -ish: Tire pressure can make a difference, sure, but I really think the bigger issue was having too few driving wheels. It looked like the first test either didn't have the fronts driven at all, or maybe at the software level they had designed it to mimic open differentials instead of locked diffs. I would have been tempted to do an MVP / prototype by building floats onto an ATV. At least then the off-road functionality would be basically guaranteed as a baseline. Two more examples to look at, off the top of my head, are the Argo 6x6 and the Marsh Master. And for the ability to climb up onto things, I'd have to consider the triangular three-wheeled assemblies that some stair-climbing dollies use. (They look like big fidget spinners). It could even be a potential inspiration just for the ice axes. 💭💡
No worries! I didn’t take it personally. I’m a big fan of WAL-LE, but it’s not actually my creation - I’m just the guy who made the documentary. So all these ideas on how to improve the design are really interesting to see and I’ll pass onto the EDL team. Who knows, maybe there’ll be a WAL-LE 2.0 that can implement some of these awesome suggestions!
As a mech engineer with some offroad experience as a hobby. I would be concerned with ground clearance. I like the concept, but putting all your electronics on the exposed bottom will put it at risk and also reduce ground clearance. But it does give you a super low point of gravity :-) Is it supposed to autonomously carry payloads or just to be a "donkey" to carry loads with people in close proximity? Its a bit difficult to understand its purpose other than being an awsome vehicle. Really cool project. Can see a lot of work has been put into this before any steel was actually cut.
Thanks for checking out the doc. WAL-LE is pretty awesome, right? I’m no engineer (photographer/filmmaker here), but my understanding is that this 1/4 scale prototype is a proof of concept to transport people and cargo from ships to shore in the arctic - all controlled remotely.
Yeah, like "mule" UGVs 😊
Ah so THAT’S what a “mule” is 😂
WAL-LE...........................WALL-E. Cute.
Right!?
electric vehicle in the arctic....where to charge it ? a diesel engine would be a bit more practical , isn't it ?
Well, electric means it can be charged by any source, which will probably sometimes be diesel - as well as solar, wind, power from the ship, power from bases, etc. If they were going to regularly use it somewhere, they could also deploy a solar (or diesel) charging stations, like those being done by Jeep, Rivian, Tesla, etc.
Great points! My understanding is the battery would be swapped or charged from the ship it would be deployed from. The arctic eco system, particularly the permafrost, is also very sensitive to pollution, which is why the EDL team built an EV prototype.
And you wouldn't want any implications of false positives or anything, if you're doing core samples to test for pollutants, carbon, etc.
This is going to be big
Funnily enough, this is 1/4 scale version of WAL-LE. If the EDL team win the contract to put their prototype into production it will be big. Really big!
@@tristan_viney It wasn't clear from the video if it was a scale prototype. The only thing that indicated that it might be was the ability to fold into a container - it looked like it would fit as is.
@@Starfireaw11 Thanks for the feedback! Perhaps I should have placed a little more focus on that in the documentary
@@tristan_viney I strongly suggest they make two type, a drone one with like this and the bigger one. The drones is the future in warfare and I see this one as a perfect reconnaissance unit if they add a little flying drone with a charging base.

I honestly don’t know how other creators manage it while also building a business. And I’m still chipping away at that 100 portrait session goal 💪

@@tristan_viney amazing work!
It's so interesting what can happen when you put yourself out there. Love this!
1000%, Jess! It's somewhat terrifying to put yourself out there and it's very easy to give yourself entirely sane and rational reasons why you shouldn't. (Which I'm going through working on my next video.) But there's also a tonne to be gained and loads of interesting people to meet by putting work out there and seeing who it resonates with :)
