Making an upgraded iPhone car adapter dongle for less money than the stupid basic dongle that broke

The dongle I use to connect my iPhone to my car audio through the AUX jack broke because it was so cheaply made, so rather than buy yet another one, I decided to make an awesome bluetooth dongle with a built-in microphone which ended up costing me less. Go figure.

Nice looking build! I did mine similar years ago and it was a daunting project, specially for someone with no woodworking skills like me. Yours looks really nice and refined. My only concern would be the legs. The storage weighs is considering once you add comics and start fill the drawers. I'm afraid they wont hold. But nice setup!
thanks!! Really appreciate that. We will see if those legs hold over time. Right now, with the cabinets totally full, they weigh around 500 lbs. The legs together are rated for 1,200 lbs, so hopefully that's enough margin. But I guess we'll see if that number is accurate...
The day you became Earwig Man!!!!
You did a great job. I plan on making my cabinets for my comics this winter.
Would you happen to have a cut list available?
I don't have a complete guide yet, but in general, for the cabinet frame, there's the top (43.75 x 24), bottom (43.75 x 24), middle (42.25 x 24), left side (25.75 x 24), right side (25.75 x 24), and 6 divider pieces (each is 12.5 x 24). I think you'll need two 4 x 8 sheets total, but you'll have some scrap. The drawers are all made from three identical pieces of 1/2" plywood, each is 8 x 23. So for eight drawers, you'll need 24 of those. I have all the dimensions on my other video (if you skip to 3:25).
Do you have a materials list?
I don't, but I think I should put one together. It should just take a couple of hours to go back an figure out what I bought. The amount of material you'll need will be different depending on the number of cabinets you make and the dimensions (number of drawers, if they're sized bigger to fit CGC, etc.). The frame here is all 3/4" plywood, and the drawers are all 1/2" plywood. Everything is assembled with pocket screws, except for the plexiglass fronts which are attached with 3/4" size 4 metal screws. The legs are from Amazon (just search for "mid century modern legs"). The underside bracing is made from a couple of 2x4s (which youll see I planed in the video---totally optional step).
@@spidermikevarietyshowA planer is the on thing you used I don't have. The main thing is wondering how many 4x8 sheets of plywood. It seems like maybe 1-3/4 inch and 1- 1/2 inch.

Bro. This is awesome. I wish I had the space to build something like this. I definitely have the space to PUT something like this.
Once it's built, it's definitely a space saver! Those long boxes take up a lot of room. I'm super lucky to have the space to build it.
Enjoyed the project and jammed out to the cover song. Pumped up. I have four short boxes in my closet and would like to build something like this to bring them out in to my office. Integrate with my IKEA craft cabinets/desk.
Yes! I'm happy you liked the song!! I spent a little while trying to find a good storage solution from Ikea, but it was hard to find something that would accommodate my collection (3000+ books). With four short boxes, I bet there will be a few good options!
Wow it looks awesome. Are you worried light will fade the front comics? I use completely blacked out black plastic boxes in my shed as natural light comes in but I’m shifting towards doing the wide filling cabinet method for ease. Again great job.
Thanks so much! Really appreciate that. In terms of books fading--yes, you're totally right. My cabinets won't see any direct sunlight, but they're also not in the dark. There is also UV glass that I'm looking into (I use Museum Glass for all my comic original art that I have framed), but in the meanwhile, I have some lower grade doubles of issues that I keep in the fronts. That way it's still nice to glance at the cabinets during the day :)
Have you thought of selling the blue prints of your cool cabinet?
I appreciate the vote of confidence! But I'd rather just post the information for everyone to freely use. I've gotten so much free information and guidance from RUclips myself, I really just made this channel to pay it forward and share some of my lessons learned with other people. I find it's already hard enough (+daunting!) to get into a new hobby, so I'm hoping this makes it a bit more accessible.
Wow, thanks for this. Was always thinking of doing something similar for my collection since the long boxes are a pain when you have them stacked up. Noticed that you didn't put a final backer piece to completely seal up the cabinet. I think I'll do that just to help keep out bugs and spiders.
That's a really great point. I think that's an upgrade that I need to do (and I hope it will be easy enough). I think maybe some 1/4" MDF would work?
Maybe I missed this when I first watched, but about how many comics does each drawer hold?
Each drawer holds 200 (comfortably) and 210 (tight). That's based on typical comic books, there are some drawers that have annuals + thicker books, which need a bit more room.
I do a lot of woodworking, I'm going to have to give something like this a try, good job man 🍻
You definitely should! I'm on the lookout for my next project now :)

Now THAT is a killer piece of comic book furniture!!
Thank you!!! It's my new favourite piece of furniture.
Awesome man!
Thanks so much!! Much appreciated.
Looks nice. Hope those legs will handle the weight over time! As you know, plywood is surprisingly heavy. I built vinyl record boxes in the 70's and was surprised how heavy those suckers were. And when you add the comic books to the cabinet, the weight just gets heavier - although Silver, Bronze, and Copper are certainly lighter than Moderns.
Very true. I didn't realize how much heavier the modern stuff was until I picked up a box of glossy Venom books from the 90's. I think the cabinet weighs around 500 lbs fully loaded with books, so hopefully the legs can handle it (they should have a combined capacity of 1,200 lbs)--but of course, time will tell. I definitely couldn't move the cabinet frame by myself.
nice job- especially for your first build! keep it up!
Thanks!
Dude...Awesome build...but even better choice of music! MK!
Yes!! I was wondering when someone was going to comment on that. I love that movie.
another fun video - thanks. I've had my ASM Gottlieb for about 7 years now. Everything works great, replaced most of the boards with new or NOS - but I've noticed that even a long playtime, no losing ball for a good while the score of every game is always so low. Everyone who tries it, I haven't seen a 3 ball game over 90k really. That just seems like something is wrong. Curious - what you're score experience has been?
That seems a bit low, but I'd say most 3-ball games don't hit 100k points. Usually, though, if I play 7 or 8 games I'll crack 100k, rarely 200k. My all-time best was 700k, but it was insanely lucky. Will probably never repeat that. There are a few things that come to mind for why the score might be low--there are playfield adjustments you can make--there's a "conservative mode" and a"liberal mode". If you look at a PDF of the manual (there are a few online I've seen), you'll see that "conservative mode" is designed to end your games faster. My pin is set to "liberal mode". The only game switch that affects your score is "novelty mode" (switch 20) which gives 50,000 point bonuses for special and extra ball--I don't think I have this on.
@@spidermikevarietyshow thanka for this ill check the manual and check that setting
I'm putting my project together, i can't wait to get started on this
Can't wait to see it!!
How much would you guess it cost for you to make your cabinets
Great question. I think it was altogether around $500. The most expensive pieces were the plywood sheets and the drawer slides. I got a good deal on the plexiglass fronts from a local plastics shop.
@@spidermikevarietyshow thank you
love this! (and you were right to paint the bottom as well, as you don't want the wood to absorb moisture and expand/contract at different rates.)
Hadn't thought of that! Great point.
Nice comic storage! Looks great! I've been using 4 drawer filing cabinets, got them cheap from a business liquidation sale.
That's a great option. I've seen some people put really amazing custom vinyl wraps on them and they look incredible.
Great job, Earwig-Man!
Hahaha yes!
Incredible case and an even greater collection!!
Thank you so much!
its a dream just to have this much room to build something....so jealous....
It really has been a dream come true after working for years in a tiny backyard!
Great job 👏
Thank you!!
A lot more storage than i thought, I have a small collection only 600 books or so.
You could make a 2x2 cabinet or a 1x4 cabinet that would hold 800 books. And don't forget, comic book collections are like gases. They expand to fill the available space. So build the biggest cabinet you can!
Great collection and storage idea. I may have to steal the idea!
You should! I took the idea from this guy (who is awesome for making this video 9y ago!): ruclips.net/video/qC9KGT7Fms4/видео.htmlsi=OuWjHYCYXmlwhkKZ
This is awesome!
Thank you!!🙏🙏🙏
I Think this was really tooooo much oil coats or what ever for a workshop table. Really not nessessary.
Thanks for the comment! It was Minwax wipe-on poly. It goes on really thin, so I've found that for a heavily used surface, I get great results with 4-5 coats instead of 2-3. I've even used it on guitar builds in the past, though in that case I'll do even more coats so I can properly level sand + polish it.
I appreciate also showing the things that didn't work. I was going to replace the button on mine, but I like reusing original parts when possible, so I am going to give this method a shot. Is it still working after 7 months?
I hope it works out! One of my favourite RUclips channels is Stezstix Fix, and he's always so good about showing stuff that doesn't work--and he even makes videos of stuff he failed to fix! I find those videos really helpful.
1:55 a useful tip for this exact scenarios, is to drill out those wood filled holes, get matching timber (you can buy a wood plug drill bit online super cheap) then glue wood plugs in and sand them flush. be sure to line the plugs up with the grain. then yo should have no issue staining, they will be 99.99% invisible.
This is the way. You're totally right. Wish I'd thought of that!
Those three are about $80k, they're just there on the top of that shelf. Nice.
It's insane how they have shot up in price!
Great work! Did you move to the country?!
Sure did :)
Great job! I need to make a few of these for my collection.
I'd really recommend making one once your collection gets bigger than a few long boxes!
Impressive work!
Thanks so much! 🙏
I would like to know what type of lights you used
A common erroneous Chinese translation for CHOICE is COLOR. This is what confused you. I also ended up buying antennas. Almost all AliExpress sellers use the word color instead of choice. It seems that the advertisements are translated from Chinese to English by AliExpress and there is an error in translation.
Tx for video
So pin 11 is for an external pairing button? Ive been looking at that board and i just dont know what connect means
Yes, exactly. You'll connect that pin 11 to a NO switch which is connected to GND. On a low signal, it will enter bluetooth pairing mode.
That looks awesome!!! Great job!!!
An extension to this glitch: the level of the encountered mew corresponds to the attack stage of the last fought pokemon (in this case slowpoke). If you lower its attack by using for example growl 6 times the mew you encounter will be level 1. Level 1 pokemon are not intended to exist in this game and it invokes another glitch where it will jump straight to level 100 instead of level 2 due to its experience growth rate. 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓
Seriously?! I've got to try that on my next run. 😎
Why do this if the glitch to catch one is absurdly easy and doesn't require a game genie

God tier build
cool project man, next level would be to have an led on every fret for every string!
Thanks! That's a great idea. I was thinking that maybe I should put in colour changing LED's as well.
It might be more practical to do that on a bass: fewer strings, and on a wider neck. On a guitar, you might eventually reach a point at which there's not enough wood left in the neck (or at least on the fretboard) for it to serve its musical function properly. Is the ultimate an LED for every string on every fret, with a different colour for A, B, C (etc.) AND the sharp & flat of each?
@@therealsouthpaw i agree that a 6,7,8 string guitar would be harder to pull off, versus a bass. I think that he should pursue both as I KNOW there is a market for modifications like this. It could look really incredible in the hands of some tech death bands that do a lot of shredding/tapping etc
@@spike6385 Totally agree. Finger tapping looks really cool with all the LEDs lighting up. Would look really cool onstage at an industrial metal show.
