Polaris Indy trail beater Compression test and steering linkage repair
What year is your indy trail 488
What year is that indy trail
😂😂😂😂
Were those ever offered with electric start?
I'm determined to resurrect the indy trail deluxe that's been sitting under my deck for 10 years. While I'm probably not going to go this in depth, at least now I know where to look for potential nests.
There is no mistaking the exhaust sounds of an old 40hp
It's nice to see young ones having some real fun
First year of the 40! I love it. Makes me miss my 63 Duratech 16 with a 63 Evinrude Big Twin 40.
too awesome in big muddy puddle!!!!!
awesome!!! Again !!
How did ya get those bolts out to clean..???
What brand and size is the rear sprocket?
Yawn!
Pretty cool!
👍
Mmmm exactly what I was thinking!
Very good
Thanks
The grease on the switch is a dielectric grease and the switch needs it. Don’t wipe that grease off!
You probably know this by now but if that’s an LT1000 most of them ( if not all ) take 95”X 1/2” belt
I know now ha ha
Thanks for sharing this I might just have my engine swapped
I have a 2002 300 and it is doing the same thing. I have the whole thing apart trying to find what it is. I have a few parts ordered so im hoping the parts I ordered is what is wrong
I did piston and rings as well as valve seals. I think it was the seals in my case but it was a high mileage engine so the rings could have been worn out also. I did it all because it was going to be apart and you need to pull the head to do the seals therefore you’d have to replace the head gasket anyways so I put a top end in it at the same time.
@vintagepowersports81 mine was running fine and I went out to start it and the neutral light with the outher lights didn't come on and nothing to the starter button.
Is a snorkel?
No need for one that water is only a foot and a half deep.
Nice job. Its good to see the results of going both directions.
Ya thanks I appreciate that! I was looking for a video that showed how it runs lean and rich and couldn’t find anything so I made it and tested it for myself. Now I know how it feels for future tuning. 🍻 cheers
Love the older Polaris sleds. Got a 1995 Indy440 (liquid cooled), and that thing rips. It is plenty fast enough for me, and fun on the trails too. That L/C free revving 440 has more than enough power to get me into all kinds of trouble, LOL. Just put a new pair of plastic skis on it this year, but due to lack of winter, haven't been able to ride on them. Maybe next year... That Auto Ski really brought back some fond memories for me. It reminds me of an old Boa Ski I had back in 1980-81. Mounted a 297cc Sachs on it and just had a total blast on that thing! I have a lot of fond memories of riding that sled all day, coming in for supper, and then out again for some evening riding. There is nothing like banging around on a one-lunger sled. Good times! I have been wanting to get a one lunger for a long time, but they are hard to find in this area. So when I saw this 1988 Yamaha Inviter, I had to check it out. Bought it! Liquid cooled 300cc one lunger, and man that thing is an absolute hoot to ride. It ain't fast, but the fun factor is off the chart. Even shot a few videos on it, but my camera mount is...well...not so good, LOL. Too bad nobody makes a simple fan cooled one lunger sled these days. I think there is a market for them, even in today's world. If Yamaha brought back the Bravo, they may have been able to stay in the snowmobile market. That was one solid machine. Anyways, I am done rambling. Thanks for the memories. Had fun riding along with you. :)
I’m glad you enjoyed my video and I also think a simple fan cooled light weight machine would sell amazingly. Everything now is just to complicated and heavy. My 1996 Indy 440/488 is fast enough for playing around for sure the only place you need (it would be nice) is on a lake or straight trail. Something about a single though is just super fun. Cheers
Awesome sled!! MAGA 2024!!!
Thanks and yes sir!
I didn't need the puller to get the wiper arms off. A little wiggling is all it takes.
Mine were on there so tight I thought it was going to break for sure
Looks like a rebadged sno jet.
It was my grandfathers and he broke the track way back in the early 70’s so my dad installed a snow jet track on it. That snow jet track failed on me last season but luckily I found a company out of Quebec GBDistribution and got a brand new track from them. It rides on
@@vintagepowersports81 : nice. I sold off all my modern sleds this year and thinking about getting all the vintage stuff running again. I’ve got 2 skidoo alpines in various stages of disrepair, a 69 Olympic 320e and a 67 evenrude opposed twin with neutral and electric start. When I was 8 years old my dad bought a brand new 69 skidoo 320e. That old sled lasted for years and every kid in the neighborhood learned to ride it. That was back in the days when snowmobiling was a event.
its not compression if its firing with that little effort its definitely still a fuel issue
I’m going to have to go over the entire system seems like it’s going lean on top of
Take a tube of red hight twmp silicone and run it around the carb boots saves ya money and will last much longer
I got new kimpex boots I think they were $20 each
We still got the hole im my driveway from this lol
The good ol Polaris secondary clutch drag haha def need more tension on the secondary spring so your not starting in second gear. Polaris is famous for this or the older stuff easy fix sometimes you can just pull it apart an change the spring to a diif hole... I used to check the stock spring numbers and find an aftermarket spring with same finish rate but get a higher start rate. Like the other guy said maybe you can shim it if that's an option.. Clutches def need work secondary for sure
Thanks for the info greatly appreciated! I’m new to these sleds I only rode the super old vintage stuff mostly 70’s vintage stuff but I like the stuff you can easily work on so basically everything until the rider forward stuff. Don’t get me wrong I’d love to have a modern sled but for now playing with the old stuff and showing the kids how to keep em going. Cheers! 🍻
I was thinking about mounting my fuel pump like you did, what made you put it like that? Any benefits?
I don’t think there are any benefits but it is easy to get at and work on. The evolved chassis sleds the pump is mounted to the front side of the air box. I pulled the air box out when I did the carbs and just trying the sled with pods. I’m going to be reinstalling the air box because the stock engine is tuned with that air box. I don’t really want to have to rejet the carbs because it’s not a race sled just a machine for the kids to enjoy.
air box YES, clutch spring needs shimming to return to stock or higher RPM engagement ( 3500 rpm or I like higher than stock )
Find and AIR BOX and put that back in there. The Polaris Air Box has Velocity stacks in them to and carbs where set up for that. Your Correct in tossing the AIR filters. When you get the air box back on correctly. The vent line for the carb bowls will go in the air box and meter the correct volume of fuel air mixture pre each circuit better. Your Jetting should clear up the plugs and not be so lean.
Thanks for the info greatly appreciated
Heck yes that's awsome I remember them old sleds had a old 67 polaris single 372 it was a tank but ran that's all we needed to have fun as kids
The old stuff is super cool I love to cruise around on em
Yes there the best
mess with that low speed jet a little . pretty awesome sled, I have had quite a few vintage sleds. is that a hirth engine?
It’s a Sachs 299
those are a good sweet too.@@vintagepowersports81
Thanks for sharing my ATV just had a similar issue. Going to try the starter silinoid on mine.
Let me know if that was the issue mine burns them out fairly quickly so either it’s the Chinese parts or there’s another issue
Playing throttle jockey will also foul plugs. There is literally no benefit to doing that.ive never understood why people do that?
You are wrong. I have never. Could A spark plug doing What you said. You are a liar. And A fool. Why is it your business
Those filters will cause a rich condition. Put the airbox back on
Ya definitely putting that air box back in. Was going to leave it out just for the convenience of having all that room but not worth it if it doesn’t run properly. I was going to rejet but just not worth my time
I see that you’re a Ryobi supporter too…🤙
I bought the drill and impact driver set like 10 years ago and built a huge deck with em and they are still going strong so I just bought more tools when I needed them so far no complaints.
The reason i ask is if it was running before that test then it didnt have less than 100 psi. They wont even run with that low of compression. Most likely it didnt even need a rebuild
I bought another one because every test was lower than I could believe like you said it’s hard to get them to fire if they are that low. So the new tester showed 110 per side which sounds better. I already had the top end kit so just did it so now I know the top end is good to go
@vintagepowersports81 right on sometimes its nice to know what you have when your out on the trail. Good video showing how its done
You do realize you were doing the compression test wrong right? Also did it run before the compression test?
I’ve done them up and cold also throttle wide open and closed I don’t get more than a psi or 2 difference. I know it’s supposed to be done hot and at wot. I have don’t this on all my machines with next to no difference.
Needs to be done wide open throttle
I love trails and 488s. I had a few different ones. My favorite was my 97 trail...actually sold it to a guy in your country
Ya they are great machines reliable and easy to work on. I love the wedge chassis I just think they look cool. Cheers 🍻 just need some more snow
Fucker still turns the track good for over 10k
Long live the 488 indy trail...such a beast
LOL. When you're driling, the auto CC classifies it as music.
That’s funny
Too awesome and good rubber boots!!!
Glad you like them!
Awesome!! What's the green assessory light for? Like why would that green light on your dash come on?
I’m not sure
I bought it real cheap and gonna fix er up for some winter fun
Awesome! Merry Christmas!@@vintagepowersports81
Cool. Olympiques had great fan cooled engines.
Yes they do
Awesome!!! Very rare.
Sure is!
Awesome!!! Who made the engines for auto-Ski?
Sachs 299 in mine
@@BROTUNED nice. Thx.
